<0> hi, i'm getting an error when trying to update my package lists, but i'm not using the us servers
<1> asdx: windows firewall?
<2> It'd seem that during the installation when installing X, it suddenly blanks the screen (like starting up X) and then it just diaplays two rectancles at the middle and the left edge of the screen.. Anyone would know how to solve this problem?
<3> hm, could be
<4> dli, will give it a go with the u flag
<5> Ryuujin, do you mean twm ?
<6> is there a way to clear out synaptic's cache? because clearly it downloaded a corrupt file
<7> dapperists: #ubuntu+1
<2> dli: I don't know what I mean, this is my first try with ubuntu.
<5> Ademan, sudo apt-get clean
<4> dli, thought if I did rsync -rv /home/blah --include="blah" --exclude="*./" user@remote it would only update whats changed but maybe the u flags the go thanks for that
<3> Ng: no it dosn't work, windows xp says it has 192.168.0.5, the dhcp server ***igned it, but when i put a statically ip address i can ping from ubuntu
<2> dli: I'm guessing it's running too high a resolution, because X works fine on freebsd.
<0> "http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/breezy/universe/binary-i386/Packages.gz: Sub-process gzip returned an error code (1)" i get this error message
<6> thanks
<1> asdx: weird

<3> Ng: yeah
<5> Ryuujin, Ctl-Alt-F1 back to a console, login, " sudo less /var/log/Xorg.0.log "
<2> dli: it's during install.. and I can't press anything.
<2> (I'm guessing it's frozen)
<8> im looking for something similar to Nero fo Ubuntu
<8> any hints?
<5> Ryuujin, if X breaks during installation, you can reboot ( at least, other parts should work)
<5> mormoloc, k3b
<7> try k3b? cdrecord is sufficient enough for pros
<7> gnomebaker is cool too
<2> dli: tried rebooting, got "boot error".
<4> dli, thanks very much that worked like a charm :)
<3> Ng: wait, it dosn't work with static ip address even now
<3> WTF
<5> noiesmo, so, try " man rsync " next time, I know it's a long man page
<5> Ryuujin, maybe you can install in expert mode
<9> Hello everyone, I'm new - to linux and ubuntu... First things first, where can I get a better IRC client?
<2> dli: maybe not. I haven't been using anything except FreeBSD for.. hum.. 4 years. And I never ran linux before that.
<9> I'm in the terminal
<1> l1lk1ll: xchat-gnome
<4> dli, I did look at the man, but I was under the impression that rsync only copied files that had changed and didnt see the need for update flag but doh I was wrong
<9> Thanks Ng
<7> l1lk1ll: by default, xchat in ubuntu is sufficient
<9> Thank you Healot :)
<5> Ryuujin, I don't think expert mode would show much weirdness to you, except you may have to choose ext3 fs, instead of ufs, kernel is auto
<7> for a start, the default installation is good
<5> Ryuujin, I would think " bsd n00b mode > ubuntu expert mode"
<2> I think I'll just go back to my trusted FreeBSD.
<7> once you are thinking of customization, choose expert
<9> I'm so excited about this, I still have some mud on my shoes...30 minutes ago I was in windows :-S
<2> dli: well, I can't say I'm a bsd newbie..
<5> Ryuujin, try gentoo-fbsd :)
<2> dli: maybe not, no.
<10> does anyone know when the next release of ubuntu is?
<1> Insup: 9 days or so
<11> um
<11> I have problem
<12> is there a way, in KOPETE, to reduce the chat-window in the system tray?
<10> hmm, wondering whether to install today or wait, is upgrading quite painless?
<11> when i try to install a program it says "configure error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH
<9> Good question Insup, I just installed today
<5> Insup, install dapper, and keep it updated
<1> Insup: upgrading should indeed be pretty easy, but a fresh install is always nicer imho. It's entirely up to you though. Create a separate partition for /home/ and you can install the new version next week with little or no pain :)
<1> Corey: you probably need to install the build-essential package
<11> hen i try to install a program it says "configure error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH
<11> build essential
<9> Ng, You seem like the guy I need to be talking to :)
<11> where is that ?
<9> I'm confused, I can't even install this xchat client. :)
<1> Corey: in synaptic or apt-get'able
<5> Corey, sudo apt-cache search build-essential
<1> dli: you don't need sudo to apt-cache search :)
<5> Ng, I don't know :( because I always use root, while some smart ***es want to keep using root as a top secret
<4> dli, from looking at the man page if I add the --delete flag then anyfiles that the sender does not have will be removed from the recievers system?
<1> dli: they're not smart ***es and it's not a top secret. It's a good idea, but this is not the place to debate the merits of sudo
<11> ok it came up with stuff
<11> dli: it came up with stuff now what
<1> Corey: sudo apt-get install build-essential
<13> where can i find the standard xmodmap for ubuntu?
<11> Ng: I did that and i have a list of stuff now what ?
<5> noiesmo, better test to make sure it's what you want

<1> Corey: no, the command dli gave you just listed the available package, I dunno why he said that. The command I just gave you is different.
<4> dli, ok :)
<11> Ng: sudo apt-get install build-essential
<11> oops
<11> Ng: You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:
<11> The following packages have unmet dependencies:
<11> build-essential: Depends: libc6-dev but it is not going to be installed or
<11> libc-dev
<11> Depends: gcc (>= 4:4.0) but it is not going to be installed
<11> Depends: g++ (>= 4:4.0) but it is not going to be installed
<11> Depends: make but it is not going to be installed
<11> Depends: dpkg-dev (>= 1.13.5) but it is not going to be installed
<5> Corey, if you are not sure about a packet, try, apt-cache , apt-file (you may have to install it) , or http://packages.ubuntu.com to search for it
<14> !paste
<15> see <!pastebin> please
<11> gimp: Depends: libtiff3g but it is not installable
<14> !pastebin
<15> Please do not flood the channel http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/ for pasting long texts it does not disrupt the channel. [webboard for Ubuntu: http://www.gnomefiles.org/app.php?soft_id=1269 : not an offical package]
<11> E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).
<16> Hm... anyone here had luck with getting Extended Input Devices to work?
<16> (Dapper)
<1> Corey: looks like you might need to do a sudo apt-get upgrade
<1> Arnia: dapper questions in #ubuntu+1 please
<14> Arnia: #ubuntu+1 for dapper
<11> ok
<16> Ok, apologies... need to put my gl***es on :)
<11> Ng: Reading package lists... Done
<11> Building dependency tree... Done
<11> You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these.
<11> The following packages have unmet dependencies:
<11> gimp: Depends: libtiff3g but it is not installable

<14> Corey: DO NOT PASTE HERE
<1> Flannel: use !tell instead, otherwise he probably doesn't realise you're talking to him
<1> also it spams us less ;)
<17> omg i lost my 60gb laptop hdd and its external casing!
<17> damn!
<5> B1zz, stolen ?
<11> in snypatic it says i have a broken package
<17> sadley no i think misplaced.... :(
<4> dli, thank you for your help the --delete cleared only what I explected ;)
<1> Corey: I think it'd be a good idea to tell synaptic to reload its package lists, then quit it and do "sudo apt-get -f install" in a terminal - somehow the package system looks a bit confused
<5> B1zz, but why #ubuntu ?
<17> idk i will shut up now :-p
<11> ok i fixed the broekn package wich was gimp
<11> cause im trying toi nstall gimpshop
<5> noiesmo, have a look at rsnapshot , maybe, it's something helpful to you
<11> Ng: i got the build-seesential done
<1> Corey: you should have a compiler installed now :)
<4> dli, ok I will, I mainly what to sync my home folder less a couple of things to my back server so if I get sick of this install I can just run my script then blow the install away without loosing emails and any other files etc I 'll chceck out the rnapshot to.
