<0> is it next to impossible to install?
<1> it's free if you have purchased nero for windows
<2> Abou, have you many files you use with OOo
<3> sweet ;)
<1> but k3b will certainly work better than nero for linux..
<4> gnomefreak and if i want reset it again to Gnome use sudo aptitude gnome-desktop right ?
<3> F0LL0W3R: no
<3> F0LL0W3R: choose what you want to log into on the login screen
<4> aha
<4> WonderFul !
<5> gnomefreak, i thought you would've been a gnomebaker kinda guy
<3> mikeb: nope didnt like it ata ll
<2> Abou, your going to have to give them the right permissions to be opened
<0> so is there any spyware programs for linux that work?
<1> no

<5> disinterested_pe, there is no spyware on linux
<6> Hi, I have a question concerning the appearance of some application windows in gnome, do I direct that here?
<7> ompaul, I understand what permissions are, it was only figuring out why oo needed root permissions, I think what happened is I used oo the first time to access some file owned by root,so I used sudo, and so oo created the .openoffice.org2 with root as owner and no access rights to others...
<3> brb
<0> ok
<2> Abou, that would be it
<0> i bet theres viruses though
<7> ompaul, thanks
<2> disinterested_pe, no
<5> disinterested_pe, i havn't seen any, nor have i been infected
<1> disinterested_pe, not yet
<0> so does fire fox block that stuff?
<8> another quick question; how dangerous is it to run ubuntu under root rather than a regular user running sudo ?
<5> disinterested_pe, there is nothing to block.... linux doesn't work like doze
<2> disinterested_pe, there was one for redhat a few years ago but nothing for ubuntu - and no its not firefoxes job, please read www.securityfocus.com and search for "linux virus" its a different paradigim
<9> wzpr: running as root all the time is quite dangerous
<7> wzpr, it can make your errors .. system wide
<5> wzpr, if you don't know what your doing... yah
<2> Abou /me rofl :-)
<0> thx ompaul
<9> wzpr: switching to root when you need to do an administrative task or using sudo is pretty much the same
<7> ompaul, what's that? (Abou /me rofl :-)
<1> disinterested_pe, you have rootkits but unless you run funky programs you don't know downloaded from unknown places, linux box is pretty much safe
<0> so basically if u mess ur pc up its all ur own fault
<2> joedj, its not, switching to root means you do everything as root while it is open - not a good call
<10> hi
<2> joedj, cd etc
<10> can i get quicktime movies played in ubuntu?
<2> Abou, ehh your telling him, given our chat :-)
<2> Abou, rofl roll over floor laughing
<6> Some windows in gnome, like the "jump to file" window in xmms, doesn't seam to fully inherit the appearance settings adjusted through the theme manager, any idea why?
<11> hi
<12> anyone had a problem with gxine not finding cook.so.6?
<1> wzpr runnning linux as root is as a bad idea as running windows as administrator
<12> if so anyone know why and how to fix it?
<8> really? I run windows as admin on my other PC but not root on here
<0> so whats going to be different in the new release in ububtu?
<9> ompaul: i'm not referring to user error so much as program vulnerabilities
<13> HunterZ: try mplayer
<0> ubuntu
<9> ompaul: e.g. running your IRC client/browser as root
<12> leopard10, you mean me?
<7> ompaul, I have some (basic) unix knowledge, i only need help running the new applications ... :-)
<12> im downloading mplayer as we speak
<12> gxine, vlc and totem are having problems playing dvds
<12> i hope mplayer works
<13> masked: i'm talk to HunterZ.. :)
<7> ompaul, in answering the questions I know, I feel I pay back for the help I get ;-0
<0> so where are most of us?
<2> joedj, as we deal with a lot of converts we tend to point people to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RootSudo as it explains the logic of sudo and how to use it, :-)
<11> leopard10 why i try mplayer?
<14> masked, what problems?
<2> disinterested_pe, this is not your average chat room, its ubuntu help if you want to chat we have such a channel, #ubuntu-offtopic
<12> Phlosten, gets to the language selection screen for the dvd then carks it
<13> HunterZ: mplayer can play .mov
<0> well guys and gals i need sleep ty for the info
<2> Abou, crystal clear ... ;-)
<12> Phlosten, mplayer doesn't work either
<9> ompaul: yeah, it would be nice if that page also mentioned the type of issues i'm talking about as another reason to use sudo. perhaps when i'm not so lazy i will update it =P
<12> its definatly distro specific it worked fine when i compiled gnu/linux from source.
<3> blue-frog: for nero4linux i want the trial version (does it ask for keycode) or is there a different download?

<1> I don't know am not using nero
<9> ompaul: or rather, as another reason not to run programs as root unless necessary
<3> ok ty
<7> gnomefreak, what do we usually use for cd writting in ubuntu?
<3> Abou: i use k3b
<3> im gonna need wine :( forget it its not worth it :(
<6> can I get Gaim/irc specific information in here?
<14> masked, is it a commercial dvd?
<12> Phlosten, yes.
<15> hi all just now i configured my keyboard shortcut's and i ***igned ctl+up for volume up and down for volume down but i even ***igned left and right to play and pause respectively. After playing for some time i resumed my work which i was doing in screem and found that left and right key's are not working even while typeing this text i couldn't move either right nor left. please help me cause this will ruin my life if it continues like this
<15> i am using gnome 2.14 and the os is dapper drake
<15> i disabled the left and right key ***ignments even then i am unable to use them
<14> masked, I am guessing you have installed neccessary css decryption codecs?
<15> what i can do with left and right arrow key's is to switch between virtual desktops that's it
<12> Phlosten, yes
<16> how can you resize a partition in linux?
<2> bony, please go to #ubuntu+1 for conversations about dapper as it is the channel for alpha and beta software
<9> pvd2006: GNU parted can do it for some filesystem types, IIRC
<12> Phlosten, it plays the Universal theme intro, goes to language selection then stops.
<15> ompaul, oo thanks for suggesion
<7> pvd2006, try parted
<14> masked, very odd
<2> bony, yw
<16> alright parted it is
<12> Phlosten, do you know what cook.so.6 is for?
<3> there is a .deb ;)
<14> masked, not sure, have you tried starting it from the command line to get an error code?
<17> masked: maybe try installing libdvdcss.
<12> gxine asks for it and dvr3.so.6
<12> jpjacobs, already have
<6> How do I automatically join this channel when I log on IRC? I use Gaim.
<18> hello
<17> lerch: add a chat into your buddylist , this channel, then right click on it, there should be a autojoin option.
<2> lerch, depends on what client your using, as there are sevearl
<12> jpjacobs, well libdvdread that was
<12> jpjacobs, will that suffice?
<2> ohh
<3> ompaul: he said gaim
<3> lol
<19> Hello
<2> gnomefreak, D'oh!^4
<3> ;)
<19> Hello
<2> thomas, be happy if you don't get 700 replies :-)
<19> Hallo everybery
<16> alright, I have a 2nd hard disk which is 120gigs that has no os installed on it, instead I am using it for a backup drive so if I want to resize it to put 10gigs at the end of it I just resize the current partition to -10gigs right?
<17> masked: dunno, but i needed libdvdcss in order to get subtitles working. It's something to read encrypted DVD's I thought that perhaps that's your case
<19> I like pizza
<19> Hallo
<3> !dvd
<20> DVD playing is possible in ubuntu. You may need libdvdcss2, which is available via http://wiki.ubuntu.com/SeveasPackages (section extras)
<12> jpjacobs, libdvdread is supposed to do that
<12> Phlosten, *** libdvdread: CHECK_VALUE failed in ifo_read.c:928 ***
<12> *** for vts_ptt_srpt->nr_of_srpts < 100 ***
<12> libdvdnav: ifoRead_VTS_PTT_SRPT failed
<2> thomas, no ubuntu questions?
<18> thomas: everyone likes pizza. how is it relevant?
<3> libdvdcss is to read them
<19> What`s you homepage
<19> ?
<12> gnomefreak, thanks
<3> nope sorry css is for encryption
<17> thomas apt-get order pizza ;)
<3> dvdread reads them but i suggest you get both you will need them both im sure
<6> jpjacobs: thanks for the reply. I already added a chat to the autojoin, namely irc.freenode.org which it autojoins just fine, I'll try adding the channel aswell.
<21> hi
<21> i heard that there is a release every 6 months. are there software updates with apt-get between this releases?
<16> well I guess trying to run parted on a NTFS based hard drive is pointless?
<12> gnomefreak, still doesn't work.
<3> masked: what are you trying to do watch a dvd?
<12> yep
<3> masked: did you use the region set command?
<12> no
<3> !restricted
