<1> <--Knox
<3> whats that
<0> close enough!
<1> I ain't travelling to Essendon to fix a computer :P
<4> g1gaman: I use kde not gnome so it has no meaning to me
<0> come help me :D
<3> wheres essendon
<0> :( oh well thanks for all your help
<1> In Melbourne, Victoria.
<5> hm
<1> (Australia) :P
<0> umm it's near sunshine?
<6> Thanks Shalos, for your help. It's DLing so I guese I'll have to retry in the morning

<3> ooooh
<5> I think the upgrade is complete
<0> money ponds area
<7> anyone there?
<5> nothigns happening
<3> yea nate.. it should just workim hoping
<4> g1gaman: should be able to change it back under the gnome-control-centre
<3> yea thats a lil ways
<5> how do I know if Im running Dapper Drake now?
<1> ^heh
<5> I didnt reboot or anything
<8> linux_galore, hoe to get in to gnome control centre?
<1> check version
<3> pretty sure youll need to reboot bilford
<5> ok
<2> bilford, well you need to reboot.
<5> it didnt tell me to reboot
<9> yeah reboot
<4> g1gaman: run gnome-control-centre from the command line
<1> reboot ;P
<7> is it worth it to upgrade to dapper?
<5> ok
<1> What kenerl version are we up to? .16?
<0> :'(
<2> dutchee, to me it was anyways.
<3> dapper or b reezy sicc?
<0> i've been working on this comp all day, now it's stuffed lmao
<1> in terms of linux, shalos.
<3> oh
<3> i dunno
<7> can you upgrade to dapper if you are using ubuntu without reinstalling?
<9> yeah dutchee
<8> linux_galore, thank you very much. another question. maybe i should choose kubuntu, if i'll to reinstall system?
<2> dutchee, yes.
<1> hintswen: Heh, don't worry mate, it'll all come to you. Have a bourbon :P
<4> g1gaman: up to you I prefere Kubuntu
<1> Took me about 24hrs to get my computer to work, because of a stupid motherboard confliction :PP
<9> haha siccness
<4> g1gaman: its a personal thing
<3> thats computers for ya hints.... take a break.. get a good night sleep.. dream about killing your comp.. come back at it the enxt day
<1> Never, ever buy DFI motherboards.
<3> really? heard those where the ones to buy
<1> Good lord no.
<1> They're stable once they're working.
<1> Getting them to work is another issue.
<6> It is realy a shame. I've gotten Linspire to work, and I am impressed, with how well linux works, but it just takes so much effort to get it to work. One of the project developers seriously needs to put some effort to making a Linux version that is more user friendly. Then the Linux community could explode since there would be no reason to use windows. But that is just a Linux virgins opinion.
<8> linux_galore, is kde easier to use? which gui needs less ram and cpu resources?
<3> well dapper should be easier nate.. its the newer version trying to get those things
<3> siccness really?? oh well had bad luck with my msi mobo too
<4> g1gaman: pretty much the same
<9> NateBHere: that's what we're trying to do with ubuntu
<9> NateBHere: key word being trying
<10> g1gaman, KDE uses even more RAM/resources than Gnome does
<1> Yeah, I'm not really a fan of MSI either.
<8> Madpilot, thank you
<1> Next motherboard will probably be Abit.
<2> to me KDE is faster in ubuntu
<3> nb fan went out on it.. had to replace it.. but i think i got damaged.. so usb doesnt come on everyone once in a while
<8> samuli, are you sure?
<9> if you use breezy, it is faster.
<2> so I wouldn't say it uses more resources.. maybe that's just better use of them :)

<1> Heh shalos.
<4> Madpilot: really, do you know you can define the kde ram footprint in the settings, some have got it as small as 34mb
<2> gigaman, I'm not the only one saying kde runs better for them. Still, I prefer gnome.
<5> ok, Dapper Beta
<1> Yeah, gnome is smoother imo. :)
<6> That's another reason that I decided to try Ubuntu. The statements on the home site, made me feel that I could try the switch to Linux because it portrayed a community that is freindly to all people of all computing abilities.
<4> siccness: to me gnome is slower by a mile
<11> hi, I just installed ubuntu hoary in server mode on my older comp, and I'm just wondering how to install my sound card?
<3> really? something must be wrong there
<9> NateBHere: we have to be friendly, because the software is nowhere near where it should be yet :)
<11> it's an ISA card
<12> my experience is also that KDE feels a lot more responsive than gnome
<1> linux_galore: Guess it really comes down to conditions.
<4> also on my tests gnome has a 27mb "larger" ram footprint
<9> iNiku: gnome only recently started working on optimising itself
<11> Creative Sound Blaster AWE64
<12> spikeb: seems like they have a ways to go
<3> yea but gnome slower than kde just doesnt seem right to me
<2> g1gaman: Why don't you try both out. I have both in my ubuntu and I switch to whichever I'm feeling that day.
<4> <-- has kde 3.5.3 runs as smooth as
<9> iNiku: 2.14 is pretty fast, but yeah they do have a ways to go. and they have a lot of ways to do it, so that's good
<4> although right now Im on e17
<12> spikeb: well, it's good that they are working on it
<10> Folks, random Gnome vs KDE vs the world chat can continue on #ubuntu-offtopic, please
<2> linux_galore, like living on the edge huh? :)
<1> My apologies, Madpilot.
<5> now I have to figure out how I got mod_rewrite and something else working
<4> yeah get rid of Nautilus its horrible, konqueror is just so much better
<13> is there a manual on amarok? ever since upgrade I find it difficult to use..
<8> samuli, i am not such an advanced person. and i have to download kubuntu if i will choose to try it
<13> !amarok
<14> methinks amarok is a music player for Linux and Unix with an intuitive interface. See http://amarok.kde.org ; amaroK's features: http://amarok.kde.org/content/view/51/1/
<4> samuli: actually i installed e17 last year under Vector Linux
<6> This is by far the friendliest Linux chat forum I've ever been in. All the other forums I've been in are full of quite frankly arrogant a$$holes. Who think that just because you do not know how to use Linux that you are some how lesser than them. They seam to forget that they once too were likely a windows retard like (what's the windows world wid market now 90% of the world PC users) the rest of the world.
<2> g1gaman, it's really easy.. If you have ubuntu just do sudo aptitude install kubuntu-desktop (or kde or kde-base)
<15> !seen sabdfl
<14> i haven't seen 'sabdfl', metatag
<3> yea ubuntu is great that way nate.. also if ya look around the ubuntuforums.org ya can learn a lot
<4> NateBHere: lots of australians thats why and were easy going
<3> :-)
<10> NateBHere, we have a good community - and ruthless ops here ;)
<6> LOL why so many Ausies?
<8> samuli, ok i'll do that. and how to remove gnome?
<2> g1gaman, you don't have to remove it.
<4> NateBHere: blame Jeff Waugh
<3> whos jeff waugh?
<4> lol
<13> I speicifically don't like that there's no option for 'new playlist' ...
<8> samuli, but gnome'is broken anyway
<2> g1gaman: well, there's no easy way to get rid of all of it.
<6> Ruthless ops?
<4> shalos: do a google search
<2> g1gaman: just try kde and if it works for you, we'll figure something out :P
<8> samuli, if i'll do sudo aptitude install kde, will kde start automatically after installation?
<16> !kubuntu
<2> g1gaman, you need to log out and choose to log in to kde from gdm.
<14> [kubuntu] Ubuntu+KDE ; see http://kubuntu.org and you can go to #kubuntu for KDE-related help, or install from Ubuntu: sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop; ISOs: http://releases.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/breezy/
<6> You know that is probably the one country in the world that I would love visit some day.
<10> NateBHere, anyone trolling or being offensive is likely to only do it for a very, very short time before being removed
<6> Ah
<5> how do you turn on MySQL again
<6> Get it. Sorry Ubugtu. I ment now malice for using $$ to make my sware. I'm just letting y'all know that I appreciate the Ubuntu community much better than thoes of other Linux communites. I will refrain from swearing futher
<4> NateBHere: put ya feet up an have a tinny mate
<6> Hum, that has got to be an Ausie slang lemme see if I can translate
<3> haha
<6> Sit down and relax?
<4> NateBHere: basically have a seat and heres a beer
<9> yes sir NateBHere
<9> NateBHere: or "make yourself at home"
<17> NateBHere: Ubugtu is usually a bot...
<17> FYI
<7> is dapper and breezy the same thing?
<18> Good morning everyone
