<1> Need to stop it before i run firestarter?
<1> (it wasn't working anyway >_>)
<2> pnookster: no its a seperate service
<1> yeah, I know that. just thought since firestarter had a checkbox for it, it would help me configure that too
<3> dooglus: man :/ that's a nasty malfunction
<2> pnookster: usually I find thats ghosted if dhcp isnt in use
<1> ahhh
<1> maybe i stopped it earlier. hm

<2> pnookster: theres actually a really good (with pics) online manual for firestarter
<1> sweet
<5> with pics... :)
<2> pnookster: http://www.fs-security.com/
<2> well I find plain text manuals for graphical tools is dumb

<6> colin__: what do you me break?
<4> it doesnt work, it will not load when run
<6> colin__: the update manager as in the one for breezy updates or the one to upgrade to dapper?
<2> its strange how a few pictures in a howto makes a user feel more secure
<4> well its the program isnt it
<4> if i goto system update-manager
<4> nothing happens
<6> colin__: ok lets try sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
<4> and if i gksudo "update-manager -d"
<7> hey guys
<6> colin__: can you type that in terminal and hit enter please
<4> nothing happens
<7> i did something very stupid and I need help
<6> colin__: those are different things
<4> hmm
<6> update-manager -d without the " is to upgrade you to dapper
<7> i deleted my grub loader without having my ntloader in the MBR
<4> so if i type update-manager
<2> hupp3l: nothing is stupid, we just make mistakes and thats normal
<8> doesn't happened nothing when I typed sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart
<4> tells me i need to be root
<6> colin__: the update manager is for updates for your current version
<4> ok i would like to upgrade to dapper
<6> colin__: did you install ubuntu on that pc?
<7> do you understand what I did? im pretty sure it is fixable
<2> hupp3l: dont know yet
<2> hupp3l: aah sorry missed that post
<2> hupp3l: yep thats fixable
<9> how well does ubuntu run on the intel mac mini?
<4> gnomefreak, before i was able to upgrade following the instructions on the wiki. It worked on my desktop
<7> ah thanx
<4> gnomefreak, its not working on my laptop
<1> hmmm
<2> hupp3l: just need to recover the mbr, do you have a live boot cd
<1> firestarter's running, no errors
<7> yeah
<10> Hi Linux convert here! Just installed Ubuntu Dapper Beta
<6> colin__: type in terminal sudo update-manager -d and than enter your user p***word and tell me what happens?
<2> hupp3l: let me get the howto for you
<7> i have UBCD
<11> mazel tov
<1> i can ping my desktop from my laptop, and i can ping my laptop(with firestarter) from my desktop
<7> would that maybe help even faster?
<1> but it's not forwarding anything
<4> ok colin@digi:~$ sudo update-manager -d
<4> colin@digi:~$
<4> nothing happens after that
<6> hmmmm
<6> colin__: sudo apt-get update
<7> linux_galore I have the UBCD would what maybe help more?
<6> colin__: does that run?
<2> hupp3l: really doesnt matter
<4> no
<2> hupp3l: the method is the same
<6> colin__: did you happen to enable root?

<2> hupp3l: http://linuxhelp.blogspot.com/2005/11/how-to-repair-corrupt-mbr-and-boot.html
<7> thanx linux_galore
<6> colin__: did that work?
<8> somebody can help me ? I cant' restart gdm ! help me !
<6> mag_: ctrl+alt+backspace
<13> ok guys, quick question. how do i move the bottom default (window and workspace control panel)?
<6> unen: the gnome task bar on bottom?
<14> unen: Click and drag
<8> Yes but when I come back again ubuntu showme a msg and said that the gdm had been restarted many times !
<2> hupp3l: just read the "using knoppix" section the Ubuntu live CD and Knoppix are very similar
<13> gnomefreak: yeah
<14> unen: I can moved mine around the screen by clicking and dragging
<6> left click it and drag afaik unen
<8> gnomefreak and also I cant see the button shutdown in graphic session ! why ?
<6> for some reason i cant right now but was able to
<13> ... im screwed
<13> nothing happens when i click and drag
<6> mag_: im not sure
<6> mag_: restart the pc it should show back up
<8> gnomefreack I cant do sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart
<6> mag_: i think its the way you left gdm
<14> unen: Right click it, Click properties, You can select where it goes in that panel
<15> weeeeird. I ifup eth0 (private nic). Ifup wlan0 (external nic). run firestarter. configure it, blablabla.
<14> unen: Its called "orientation"
<15> can no longer connect to the internet on my laptop (running firestarter)
<15> and while i can ping my private network, and my private network can ping my laptop...
<4> gnomefreak, thanks
<13> nullified: lemme try it right quick
<15> I can't get out of the private network.
<6> colin__: it worked?
<4> yeah just had to be root
<6> colin__: my advice is to disable root again and add yours self back to sudoers list
<16> pookie, you need to open the router for intenet access probably, either that or your DNS info is borked
<6> but thats just my advice ;)
<2> pookie: all firestarter does is set the rules, if it stop you have the wrong rules
<6> ok noght all
<15> well
<15> i have the firewall section of firestarter off
<15> just used it to generate config files.
<13> nullified: wow, its screwed way the hell up... its not even reacting to that except when i tell it to go left/right then it just rotates itself
<2> pookie: firestarter isnt a firewall just a front end
<15> then why does it have a button that says "Start Firewall"...?
<8> gnomefreak I'll install compiz and xgl on ubuntu, but I need make gdm restart and when I did that I doesn't happen nothing
<14> unen: To be honest, I'm very noobey at this, I cant really ***ist you further.
<13> nullified: ok
<17> guyz ho can i configer my to work on cardserv
<14> unen: gnomefreak might be able to help you...i ***ume by his name he likes gnome ...hehe
<2> pookie: because iptables firewall rules can be flushed at any time
<6> mag_: join #ubuntu-xgl they should beable to help more
<15> ah.
<13> nullified: yeah lol
<6> nullified: ?
<2> pookie: all firestarter does is set the rules for the iptables firewall
<13> gnomefreak: hey uhh its completely borked... i change the orientation and all it will do is rotate
<18> What's the harddrive name in Ubuntu? >.>
<15> Right. And I didn't set any rules - I just enabled connection sharing via eth0
<17> guyz ho can i configer my ubuntu to work on cardserv
<14> gnomefreak: I was just saying to unen that hes having a problem in gnome, i know very little about linux he should look to someone more experianced, someone like yourself
<8> gnomefreak : I'm in thath channel too but my problem is with the gdm !
<6> unen: im not sure off hand im sorry
<13> gnomefreak: ok
<2> pookie: firestarter always sets a whole load of rules even if you define nothing is puts a whole heap of stuff in there to stop people hacking your system
<19> if anyone know anything about soundcards but can anyone tell me which of of these is the best (i have integrated sound) http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?N=2010360057+4024&Submit=ENE&SubCategory=57
<15> Okay.
<15> So.
<6> mag_: i think it has more to do with compix since it took over for xorg
<20> Does anyone know why Debian has a kdb package, but Ubuntu doesn't?
<15> Since I have outgoing connections set to 'permissive - blacklist blocking' with nothing on the blacklist
<14> unen: I had a similar problem. I accidentally removed the gnome UI and then apt-get install gnome, Once i did that it sorted all my gnome problems..but that wiped gnome off completly and re-installed it
