Comments:

<0> billybennett, if the computers are on the same lan, you can use nfs or samba, which will be a bit easier than scp/sftp
<1> intelikey, lightstar: thanks. still new to that...
<2> guys - i've got a CD in the drive and i'm actively listening to music off of it, yet it's not mounted according to /etc/mtab.........???
<3> jighead, they are definately on the same lan, but I thought samba was just for linux to windows
<4> malegria, no prob...took me a while to get used to gksudo as well..
<5> slavik, I'm not really pissed, my religon forbids lowering my standards to those who are closed minded.
<6> billybennett: nfs is for linux to linux
<7> Could someone take a peek real quick and tell me what their main group is for the login created in dapper install? I changed mine, forgot what it was and now I can't use gksudo without getting an error warning.
<6> billybennett: and samba can probably be used for that as well
<0> billybennett, samba is a file sharing protocol, linux can do server and client, so it's whatever you feel comfortable setting up
<8> Has anyone successfully added the Ubuntu-Desktop package after installing the LAMP Server setup? I can't get Gnome to properly launch -- it may be my Graphics card (nVidia GeForce 4) but I thought nVidia cards were usually pretty well handled in Ubuntu...
<9> krhis an open mind is kinda like an open door, it collects bugs.
<10> yay, ubuntu at last!!!
<0> billybennett, nfs is relatively simple, you edit /etc/exports and start the nfs server
<11> intelikey: open source code can be fixed quickly by many people ... can't say the same for proprietary code ...
<3> cause I want change my windows box to ubuntu but I basiclly just set it up for torrents and file sharing

<7> anyone please?
<9> garryfre main group is same as 'whoami'
<12> jighead: you really think samba or nfs is easier then ssh? guess again samba is a pain in the *** to set up shares, and nfs isn't really secure (who gives that the machines are on the same lan, if he has wireless and that gets compromised then you're nowhere) anyway if you install fuse and sshfs you'll be much more secure and everything will work transperantly billbennett, just try it out.
<11> garryfre: hold on
<3> I'll take note cherwin
<9> slavik software's not my religion, but yeah i hear ya.
<7> intelikey It would be what I changed it to, so whoami would be wrong possibly.
<12> billybennett: please do, it's really easy to set up
<11> intelikey: my religion is "logic"
<13> logic is antigod
<5> intelikey, but I think closedmindedness is worse.... those who refuse to even listen to alternitives may not collect bugs, but they don't do much else either.
<9> garryfre no whoami gives the user name. not the group groups give the groups.
<7> nm, seems to be the name of the user. Strangely, this is not available as a choice anymore.
<13> not godly
<11> shadeofgrey: if I see god, I will spit in his eye ...
<13> i doubt pure logic wouild be cionsidered rteligious
<7> intelikey yeah, so I see. Thanks I try looking again.
<13> thats a better way of saying what i jujst tried to say
<5> Stubbornness beening a better word.
<11> shadeofgrey: it's OT now but logic is how I think ...
<14> shadeofgrey - and others - religion is OT here, thanks...
<11> Madpilot: was about to say
<15> how do I mount an ntfs partition?
<11> all discussion about retarded windows users and brain-dead conservatives in #ubuntu-offtopic
<16> i am seeing X freeze a lot when using alsa
<9> garryfre it can be any avalable group..... one should look into that in the docs but you can make a group with sudo groupadd
<1> lightstar: how do i find the (root?)p***word for phpmyadmin/mysql? or set a new one?
<13> Madpilot: sorry man.
<5> dd if=/dev/zero.... wait? Mount a NTFS partition??
<14> slavik, phrasing it like that is OT too...
<13> Madpilot: i dont rtend to think about trhat until its too late...
<5> Sorry, jk. ^^
<4> malegria, have u set the mysql root p***word?
<9> garryfre example sudo groupadd `whoami`
<14> shadeofgrey, NP, just move it to #ubuntu-offtopic or private chat
<4> malegria, by defaul root p***word is empty
<13> Madpilot: seriously, im genuinely sorry.
<12> Krhis: hahaha hilarious
<3> cherwin, do you know where I can find help on fuse and sshfs
<17> ubotu tell jrsims about mountwindows
<18> tried to run sensors-detect and got this... where is mkdev? No i2c device files found. Use prog/mkdev/mkdev.sh to create them.
<9> then usermod and make it the default garryfre
<19> is there a way to limit apt-get's bandwidth?
<1> lightstar: i havent set nothin
<12> billybennett: just google on fuse and sshfs, it's the first hit
<20> is firestarter decent firewall ?
<7> intelikey strangely, the group garry exists, its just not available in the choices.
<4> malegria, then no p***word..but do remember to set 1..good security practice:)
<1> lightstar: ok
<16> brb
<21> I'm going through an ubuntu installaion, and the installer freezes when it's 31% finished installing the system
<22> theshibboleth: that ****s
<9> garryfre man usermod it's avalable. just gid is out of range in the gui
<14> theshibboleth, when you first boot an Ubuntu install CD, there's a "Check This CD" option - running that before starting an install is a good idea
<0> ablyss, firestarter is just a front end to the kernel's iptables, so it will create a good firewall if you understand how to create rules and filter traffic
<23> has anyone had any luck with mythtv in ubuntu? are there pacakges for mythtv 0.19 and ivtv 0.4 or 0.6?
<21> madpilot: I'm not certain that it is a problem with the cd though because this is the second one I've tried that's had a similar problem.
<18> how do i get the i2c stuff?
<20> jighead: what about my $50 router with builtin NAT ... would firestarter be useful?
<24> thechris: I'm thinking of building a myth box this summer. What problems are you having?
<9> theshibboleth ctrl+alt+f[3-4] and see what the last thing the installer does. that info might get you going

<14> theshibboleth, 'real' CDs from ShipIt, or burned? If burned, check the md5sum before burning, and in any case, try the Check This CD" option
<18> ablyss: iptables by hand rock!
<0> ablyss, firestarter will not help you config your router
<21> intelikey: thanks
<23> MarcN: none yet, i'm actually having issues in gentoo and wanting to switch to *buntu
<0> ablyss, firestarter will only config the firewall on your ubuntu box
<12> jighead: i think he's asking if his NAT router isn't enough..
<20> cherwin.. yep
<25> Anyone here know how to get VNC to allow you to get into a computer at the GDM login screen?
<25> Right now I have to be logged in to use VNC, way big security hole... : P
<21> hmm... now the installer seems to be frozen entirely
<12> ablyss: and it isn't, you have to protect your boxes in your lan against eachother
<21> as in, not even the mouse moves
<26> how can I list directories only at the command line?
<25> DShepherd, ls
<23> MarcN: but i really hate it when i'm using a distro that is missing a lot of packages i use, or is missing vital packages.
<20> cherwin: hehe.. okay
<26> FunnyLookinHat: that list everthing.. I only want files
<25> DShepherd, try, man ls
<27> well fooey! figured i'd dump mandrake after 8 years and give ubuntu a go. installation went ok except my ethernet card isn't working. can't find the gui to reconfigure it like mandrake had
<25> will give you options
<13> oh yeah that reminds me
<23> and after my terrible experiences with ubuntu on the desktop, i'm wondering if i should even concider it for a server/PVR
<26> FunnyLookinHat: in windows now
<13> hey madpilot can i have a word with you in a PM window?
<18> how do i get the i2c stuff in ubuntu dapper? sensors-detect
<18> No i2c device files found. Use prog/mkdev/mkdev.sh to create them.
<9> theshibboleth sounds like cpu 100% and/or ram 100% not a good sign.
<25> DShepherd, errr... I dont know windows
<28> anyone can point me to a free news server?
<14> shadeofgrey, sure, but are you registered & id'd w/ nickserv?
<29> I'm trying to get gdm to show it's greeter, but it's just disconnecting me before it gives me the login prompt... anyone have any ideas what I can look for?
<9> boga slashdot ?
<13> yeah
<28> intelikey: ahh?
<5> Or usenet?
<14> intelikey, he asked for news, not random noise ;)
<28> Yes newsnet
<9> lol Madpilot yeah sorry,
<30> Hi, I need some help with Azureus please. I installed via the repositories, but when I minimize/close to system tray, it dissapears, I have to select it from the menu in order to access it again. Also, when I get pop up messages from it, they don't go away when I click the "Hide" button. Does anyone else have this issue or know what might be wrong ?.
<21> It's weird because I actually was able to install suse on this computer
<14> shadeofgrey, then PM anytime
<5> newsnet?
<9> Madpilot actually i never use the stuff my self... so i wouldn't know what was good
<28> Krhis: yes, newsnet
<28> or usenet
<14> intelikey, I don't use Usenet much either
<5> I don't know of any newsnet.
<5> Yes, that's it.....
<5> All I can suggest is "Google Groups" but you're looking for a server.
<21> Would there be any point in, for example, trying to change the file system to see if the installer works then?
<5> boga, http://freenews.maxbaud.net/
<9> many or most isp's provide a news feed with many servers....
<28> thanx
<5> Anytime, boga
<31> I've used freebsd, red hat, and of course windows as a desktop OS and never had as many problems as with Ubuntu. :/
<32> hey all
<33> hey guys, i've installed vmware-player... what now?
<32> any help for a novice user to be found in here
<32> i eman real novice - copy paste level
<11> cheti, if you don't ask a real question or state a real problem, you won't get any help
<11> !ask
<34> For information on how to ask good questions please see http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html The more information you can give the better we can help you. If your going to give output of commands please use http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org
<9> laozi what ya trolling about ? i'll troll with ya.
<32> ah sorry
<11> just ask/state
<11> it's one of those "don't introduce what you want to say, just say it" type of thing :)
<31> intelikey, Just grumbling...
<27> dou213 go to hackaday and hack yourself some images
<9> oh, intelikey grumbles too
<35> hm, ssh server on ubuntu dapper, how do I get it the most easy way?
<32> question : while starting up the live cd of dapper i got a failed to init xserve and i dont get a gui. Jsut get a command prompt at ubuntu@ubuntu level
<18> if i build my own kernel for ubuntu.. how can i get he nvidia drivers / module?
<31> I think I now corrupted my sources.list and don't have a back up, that's the latest disaster.
