<0> asnd how do i do that(preferably without losing anything)
<1> firebird619, yes, did you just upgrade from hoary?
<2> DBO, No, I have had Breezy since it's release but I get behind on updates because I only have dial-up and can only download a little at a time.
<3> firebird619: no, you'd have to manually upgrade them, since linux-headers is only a virtual package
<4> send me Ubuntu logon sound.
<1> crimsun, the linux-headers package depends on the latest linux headers I though
<1> t
<5> hintswen: i normally use cfdisk /dev/hda or hdb whatever then mkfs to format. but ubuntu has a gui tool
<6> hi all
<6> when is the new ubuntu due out?
<3> DBO: linux-headers is virtual.
<0> pike__ can you tell me how to use it?
<1> crimsun, I know, but I still thought it recieved updates so it would depend on the new headers...
<7> hintswen, use gparted
<3> DBO: linux-headers-$(uname -r) is updated, yes, but note that there's no metapackage for it installed by default, therefore there's nothing to dist-upgrade automatically

<0> i need instructions lol. i **** atubuntu
<5> hintswen: might be easier to use gparted. ive never used it i dont know if its installed by default
<0> well where can i find it?
<8> cyne, June 1
<2> crimsun: I know I would have to update the headers through Synpatic, I just wanted to know if I should update them. Also, I am ***uming I should remove the old headers after the update.
<1> crimsun, ok, yes, it had not occured to me that linux-headers-`uname -r` is not in default install
<6> hastesaver, ok
<5> sudo apt-get install gparted or if its already installed type gparted in a terminal
<2> Also, I think the old linux-image files are in there from 2.6.10-5, should they also be removed.
<3> firebird619: you should install (you can't update because it's a completely new abi) it if you're planning to compile external kernel modules, yes. You don't have to uninstall the older ones if you don't wish, but I generally do to save space.
<3> firebird619: I would always keep at least one set of older working kernel(s)
<9> how do i format a hard disk
<5> ronicks: what format?
<10> so, i was considering trying out suse 10.1... it's been available on CD since 5/11, but not out on DVD until 5/18... sticking w/ ubuntu because of stupid **** like that
<11> ronicks: first partition the disk, and then use mkfs to format the partition
<2> crimsun: Ok, I am asking this because when trying to install, I beileve it is a module of some sort, for my Digital Camera to get live video from it, it is saying there is no such file or directory as /lib/modules/2.6.12-9-386/build. I ***umed may this had to do with not having the 2.6.12-9-386 headers installed.
<12> !format
<13> Bugger all, I dunno. Try searching at http://ubuntu.cc.com.au/, monsterb
<3> firebird619: uname -r
<2> crimson: uname -r returns 2.6.12-9-386
<14> does anyone use fluxbox?
<14> it's locking everything up for me
<9> format using linux os
<12> ronicks: I like QTparted and Gparted to format.
<15> I people; I need run a SB XFi under linux. Is it possible?
<15> at this time
<3> vitry: no.
<15> XD :(
<15> and in the future?
<3> vitry: possibly.
<15> :/
<2> crimsun: any idea what might be causing that message of No such file or directory?
<15> ok thanks; I'm writing a letter to creative every week
<3> firebird619: you should probably be running 2.6.12-10.38
<3> firebird619: which means you need to reboot into it then install linux-headers-$(uname -r)
<16> yea! i finally got my xorg.conf fixed, now i have a screen resolution that works
<15> and they thell me that linus is not suported
<1> firebird619, you need to "sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname-r`" to get past that error message
<17> hey is there anyway i can run gnome 2.14 on dapper?
<1> glick, dapper comes with gnome 2.14
<18> glick, I thought Dapper had 2.14 by default
<17> oh, sweetness
<2> crimsun: DBO: Ok, Thanks for the help.
<3> glick: / Madpilot: it does. 2.14.1, in fact
<17> whens dapper due for release?
<3> glick: 1 June
<1> firebird619, oops, just read crimsuns message, yeah, he already said what I said... silly me
<17> nice
<17> cant wait
<19> i upgraded from 5.10 to 6.04 and it downloaded 1GB
<1> X3n0n, congrats?
<19> i see that it downloaded the whole kde! with all the games!
<19> it still installes
<18> X3n0n, you must have had a lot of stuff installed
<19> indeed
<1> X3n0n, it downloads a newer version of almost everything on your system
<19> so it downloads the dapper version of every prog that i have?
<17> im not a big kde fan
<17> im running it now
<18> X3n0n, yes

<1> X3n0n, almost every prog yes
<17> i dont get what all the hubub about kde is all about
<19> that's why
<17> it mostly annoys me
<19> i use gnome, but it is usefull to have kde installed
<19> even if i rarely use it
<20> I used to run kde but I think I like gnome better now..
<21> hi
<1> KDE or GNOME, both are fine choices, lets leave it there =)
<1> hi HunterZ
<1> hi ompaul =)
<22> !restricted
<13> it has been said that restricted is https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RestrictedFormats Most of the formats listed there can be replaced by !FreeFormats
<19> it should have finished by now but i was sleeping and i couldn't configure some things that it asked me to
<20> waiting for compiz to settle down. was good last week but I dunno what happened, there's some weird stuff in the latest debs..
<23> morning
<17> for some reason kde makes my fans run at top speed all the time
<23> zcat[1], that would be better in #ubuntu+1 perhaps :)
<24> aie I speak french
<1> !fr
<13> Allez a #ubuntu-fr ou #kubuntu-fr pour de l'aide et de la discussion en francais.
<19> and another upgrade question...the same procedure is used to upgrade from 6.04 to the stable one?
<25> hi
<1> X3n0n, once you have dapper installed, it will "upgrade" to stable automatically
<25> I'm using a windows box, to try to get help configuring ubuntu (5.10) to connect to the internet
<19> but is it going to take so much time again?
<12> Charbel: dialup or broadband ?
<1> X3n0n, nope, there are about 100 updates per day, so if you stay on top of them, its not that bad. When the final release comes they will not be suddenly dropping another large bomb of updates
<18> X3n0n, it shouldn't - you'll get a steady stream of smaller upgrades, though, from what I understand
<23> X3n0n, you have your directions wrong
<25> monsterb: it's a broadband,
<1> Charbel, do you have a router?
<19> ompaul: what do you mean?
<23> X3n0n, Dapper will become stable 6.06 and then you will only get security fixes
<23> X3n0n, unless there are compelling technical reasons for a change to a package
<25> I have found on the forum an entry that explains exactly how to do in my case, the explanation is done for ubuntu 5.04, I have 5.10 and the connection doesn't work
<26> Hi all!
<19> ompaul: yes but i talk about upgrading to 6.06
<26> How can I change the refresh rate in Ubuntu?
<23> X3n0n, from where?
<25> I have a sagem f@st 800 modem, my ISP is tiscalli UK
<1> X3n0n, 6.04 = 6.06
<19> ompaul: from 6.04
<8> X3n0n, there is no 6.04
<23> X3n0n, there was no 6.04
<27> hi ubuntu12
<1> there is no spoon
<1> (sorry... couldnt help it...)
<19> What version do i have now
<1> 6.06
<26> r0xoR, hi
<23> X3n0n, Dapper has existed since just after 5.10, the number indicates the release date
<8> X3n0n, Dapper was supposed to be released 2006-04, but it got postponed to 2006-06. There's breezy (5.10) and then there's dapper (6.06)
<19> now i got it!
<23> X3n0n, the number is year month
<27> Ubugtu, applications menu
<28> Hi group
<26> r0xoR, how can ge the refresh rate in ubuntu? I am using it for the first time now.
<19> i know that.....the only thing about dapper maybe...
<27> ubuntu12, applications->system->preferences->screen resolution
<23> !resolution
<13> it has been said that resolution is at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FixVideoResolutionHowto
<28> I'm unable to shutdown my desktop from Power Button (in my ch***is) after installing PowerManager
<1> r0xoR, you got a macro for that or something?
<27> DBO, macro for what
<28> I've also installed gnome-power-manager, I'm on Breezy
<12> Charbel: are u using DHCP ?
<25> no ...
<25> adsl
<26> r0xoR, yes, but I have only 60 Hz there.
<25> I found the driver (in ubuntu packages)
<25> I installed it
<26> r0xoR, my eyes hurt.
