<0> katz <1> can everyone do me a favor go into a terminal and type in sudo apt-get update <2> so should i just leave it as localhost.localdomain or put in my domain name <0> i have live vs - needing floopy <3> poningru: you load testing or what? <4> hello <1> Frogzoo: no dude security bug <4> can someone point me to support for first timers? <3> poningru: ah, consider it done <5> poningru: p***words laying around? <3> DBO: try the gnome getting started guide - click the 'lifesaver' icon on the task bar <6> DBO: this is it <4> Frogzoo <4> Im a little behind that bit <4> Im actually familiar with the Linux OS itself <4> the main problem is getting to that phase
<7> if you do not want to go typing in your terminal just to mount your floppy, edit your '/etc/fstab' file and add the following line: "/dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto user, noauto 0 0" <3> DBO: nonetheless - there's some good tips in the online docs <8> If you know Linux but nor Gnome <8> then look for things where you "think" they should be <4> ok, I will look <8> Not where they are in Windows <3> DBO: otherwise, try wiki.ubuntu.org <7> to edit /etc/fstab, type in the terminal "sudo nano /etc/fstab" or "sudo gedit /etc/fstab" (if you like gui) <8> Gnome makes alot more sense than windows <4> I just need install help, Im a bit worried about hosing my windows install <3> DBO: otherwise, try *wiki.ubuntu.com* <4> however much I dislike windows, I do need it <8> If you still need windows... <9> what packages do i need to download off synaptic to get wine working? <10> wine <8> Go to vmware.com and download player for linux tar.gz version <9> that's it? <1> frank23: exactly <3> DBO: if your windows is on the first partn, & you install to 2nd partition, the installer will play nicely <8> install in home as sudo <10> anything else will install automagically sean <11> sean: apt-get handles dependancies. if there are any, it'll let you know <12> possibly a better entry in fstab for floppies is /dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 vfat user, noauto, sync 0 0 <9> nice automagically <10> :) <3> !tell thoreauputic about floppy <4> Frogzoo, has there ever been issues with ubuntu messing up windows installs? <3> !floppy <13> To mount floppy disks, see here : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MakeFloppyDriveAvailableToEveryone <8> install windows in Vmware <4> robert11, not an option, sorry <4> thank you though <12> Frogzoo: thanks, but my fstab entry for floppies works fine ;) <3> DBO: I'd be a liar if I said it never happened - but usually I think through ignorance/user error <4> oh good, my two specialties <3> thoreauputic: I never doubted it :D <14> !pastebin <13> rumour has it, pastebin is a site where you can post large texts and screenshots so you don't flood the channel. You can find it at http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org - Install webboard for easy pasting from the gnome taskbar :) <12> Frogzoo: :-) <3> DBO: lol <4> the wiki does not seem to have documentation on the install process <4> or am I missing it? <9> if i download a package that's doesn't end with .deb how do I install it? <4> oh wait <4> I see it <15> I've got a little network going with a windows box, ubuntu, and a mac. All hooked up to a 10/100 switch. File transfers (samba and scp) to and from the windows machine tops out at about 1.4MBps. File transfers between the mac and ubuntu go at about 11MBps (the highest i can probably get). Any ideas on what's wrong with Windows? I swear it used to be faster. <5> sean: how does it end? <9> tar.gz <12> sean: with rare exceptions, you don't need to do that <3> DBO: -> https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Installation <12> sean: which app ? <16> hey hey hey, 0 lag :) <9> thoreauputic, like the latest version of nmap i think it was <12> !info nmap <13> nmap: (The Network Mapper), section net, is extra. <10> robert11, because it's commercial <17> I think that it should be required that any Ubuntu user who figures out how to do something, must also spend an equal amount of time creating some documentation on how to do it again, so that other people will benifit <14> im trying to make BitchX <12> intelikey: just add multiverse to each universe line in /etc/apt/sources.list <3> phantasmoholic-: talk to ubotu <8> Ah. But it is free <16> thoreauputic it is .... universe multiverse correct ? <12> intelikey: and update, of course <12> intelikey: yes <15> phantasmoholic-, i think it should be required that if something requires documentation to do, it should probably be fixed. <0> eu the bash send me an advertising asking me for the file system <5> Ick1: you can get bitchX with synaptic you know? <0> Unable to mount the selected volume.: <0> Error: given UDI is not a mountable volume <16> well it failed to update. maybe a typo. i do that you know. <17> joevandyk: I agree with you, thats why I never use any linux distribution that I install <4> Foogzoo, the hardware support area in the wiki does not like my video card (nVidia 7800 GT), should I be worried? <10> joevandyk, unfortunately nothing seems so straight forward <12> intelikey: ah, yes, I've done that too ;-) <6> phantasmoholic-: wiki.ubuntu.com - go nuts :P <3> !tell DBO about nvidia <18> does any of u knows how to install the thunderbird?? <17> Madpilot: I did, done, and do <0> Frogzoo please eu the bash send me an advertising asking me for the file system ****Unable to mount the selected volume.***Error: given UDI is not a mountable volume <6> phantasmoholic-: excellent <12> firstent: sudo apt-get install thunderbird <12> :) <14> anyone knows why i kept getting these errors, i was trying to 'make' BitchX: http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/10112 <12> firstent: ah - mozilla-thunderbird actually <6> lck1: BitchX is in Ubuntu's Universe repo <0> Frogzoo: Frogzoo please eu the bash send me an advertising asking me for the file system ****Unable to mount the selected volume.***Error: given UDI is not a mountable volume <16> it seems to be working now so my lag time will go back up for a while.... i'll be back when it finishes. (in a day or two. heh) dialup <14> foreal <12> MOEBIOUXRamone: what command gave you that error ? <6> lck1: have you enabled universe? <12> !info bitchx <13> bitchx: (Advanced Internet Relay Chat client), section universe/net, is optional. It just takes a while to get it right the first time <12> firstent: is there some pressing reason for needing the latest one? <17> frank23: I dream of having a linux installation that would be like that <18> thoreauputic in the web page says that some bugs were fixed <6> phantasmoholic-: Ubuntu seems to be that, for a lot of people
