<0> basbryan: Not a clue. Try searching at http://ubuntu.cc.com.au/ <1> SAM_theman, well Thx!!!! <2> my graphics card <3> dooglus: is that also a free distro? <4> yurif, Yo np anytime <4> seanb64_, yo whats the problem <5> n30n: install package 'xubuntu-desktop' if you want to try it, then choose 'xfce' session from the login screen. it won't hurt GNOME <5> n30n: yes. <6> nickrud: what's bos? not getting anything good on google <7> !restricted <8> JohnsonE, emacs with his psychotherapist <0> I guess restricted is https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RestrictedFormats. This page's intent is to enable you to play most non-free media formats that are not DRM encoded. Most of the formats listed there can be replaced by !FreeFormats. <9> how do i run googleearth <9> it says command not found but its listed in the directory <10> basbryan: i don't know how helpful that is really. most new users wouldn't even know that message is for them, let alone that the mp3 format is in any way 'restricted'. <8> JohnsonE, battle of survival
<2> loaded and reburned the cd twice <2> and it seems to boot normally, but after the splash, it says it can't start the X server <11> JohnsonE, apt-cache search bos (or look up bos in synaptic) <3> dooglus: yeah i wanna check that out. Use synaptic for that? <4> AJ004, umm dude u using wine?? <2> and thats it <5> n30n: yes <9> its not on wine <9> its native linux gnu <12> Matthewv: after I make changes to xorg.com, can I just restart xorg instead of rebooting? <10> basbryan: i think it's best to explain it to them directly. <4> AJ004, hmm... <2> what do I do <10> kag: yes <2> try Kubuntu? <3> dooglus: thanks dude. <2> oh god say no, not another 2 hour download <4> seanb64_, try reinstalll x server and then do the whole process again <2> ? <8> JohnsonE, http://packages.ubuntu.com/dapper/games/bos <12> delire: what would the command be ? <11> kag, yes, log out of your desktop, hit ctl-alt-backspace <13> y'all have any recommendations for a piece of (GUI) software which can allow me to view which directories are taking up the most space? <12> ok thx! <9> how do u run a file in terminal? <2> and how? <9> just type the file name? <5> seanb64_: if the regular ubuntu disk can't run x.org, I don't see why the kubuntu disk would be able to - it's the same X server. <3> dooglus: Is it easily undone if i don't like it? <14> dribble: filelight <10> kag: hit CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE (you'll lose any open work) <11> AJ004, more often than not, yes <2> soooo <9> nickrud it says command not found <10> kag: and also this chat session! <2> what ddo I do? <2> exactly <5> seanb64_: if you are going to download another CD image, I suggest the 'alternate' ubuntu iso - that's a text-based installer. <9> i try to cd to the directory it says its not a directory <11> delire, so always mention logging out first :) <9> so its a file <9> but when i type the filename it says command not found <15> dooglus, that's right. He doesn't, and I'm not able to explain it to him right now. :( <13> Yoosah, any gtk apps? <2> *sigh* ok <10> nickrud: probably wise yes ;) <6> hmm, bos is looking ***y. i'll check it out <12> delire: :) don't worry it's on another computer :) thanks <3> AJ004: do you have admin access? <10> kag: ;) <9> n30n: yep <9> its my puter <14> dribble: i just know filelight does what you asked <11> AJ004, what is the file, where is it, and is it executable? (the big three questions) <9> should i sudo it? <5> n30n: you chose at login whether to run GNOME or XFCE4, so it's easy not to run it, yes. uninstalling it, on the other hand, is easy if you use debfoster or aptitude to manage your packages <9> current.tar.bz2 EasyUbuntu_2006-06-12 easyubuntu-3.0.tar.gz google-earth <9> Desktop easyubuntu-3.01.tar.gz Examples <9> easyubuntu easyubuntu-3.01.tar.gz.1 googleearth <3> dooglus: ok sweet. so its setting up a duel boot i take it? <13> Yoosah, it does, i just googled it and it looks aweeesome. but, sadly this is for my gentoo box (which i'm trying to backup so i can put dapper on it), and i don't have the patience/time to compile qt
<9> i typed googleearth, and nada <16> I have a quick question regarding the new dapper livecd install. When I double click on the install icon on the desktop, it runs through the installation process, but then at 97% completion, it fails. Here's another person who had a similar error and posted it as a bug report: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/49180 <5> n30n: when you install 'xubuntu-desktop', it will pull in a lot of dependencies. you may have noticed that if you use synaptic to uninstall a package, it won't uninstall the dependencies that it installed when you installed the package... <9> i moved to the google-earth directory and then typed googleearth and nada <11> AJ004, try ~/google-earth/googleearth <9> command not found on both <9> ok <14> dribble: emerge faster-compiler :P <17> hi <18> nickrud: have you read the qemu xp installation page for ubuntu? the licensing bit is a riot <16> I have no idea how to get around this bug though... and I don't see any solutions on the page either... and I've looked everywhere <5> n30n: no, it's still the same boot - same kernel, same x server. just a different 'session' in the login screen. <2> well... at least it's smaler <2> and can I install from the disk <11> ToHellWithGA, no, you have a quick link? <5> n30n: you see 'options' in the bottom left of the login screen - it's in there, the choice. <2> without just booting from the disk? <19> i'm having a major browser/plugin problem.. I want to view the embedded (.mov) video file on this webpage ( http://www.aftenposten.no/english/local/article442072.ece ), but swiftfox closes down IMMEDIATELY, Opera can load the page, but cannot stream the video... no MOV support? any idea why certain pages just *kill* firefox? <9> nickrud bingo! <17> just curious, where can i get a ubuntu live cd? <3> dooglus: okay. I gotcha <20> Ok retrying Ubuntu install # 350. Since Breezy was a failure installing I have gone back to Drapper Alternate Install ISO. Minimum requirements is a SWAP volume and a / mount point correct? <9> nickrud ok now how do i install an icon for this <11> AJ004, and just a note: three lines of paste is the max :) <3> dooglus: i shall return soon. <8> dribble, find ~ -size +1000k <21> where can i download open office <9> nickrud i want to add it in the internet section <5> seanb64_: the 'alternate' cd still needs booting from, but it installs without having to run X first, unlike the 'desktop' cd. <22> Hso: It is the plugin that is crashing firefox. <19> i - www.openoffice.org <11> AJ004, Applications->Alacarte , add a menu entry with that <21> ok <21> thank <22> i: For Ubuntu? <21> you <23> Hso: Firefox doesn't protect you from buggy plugins. <19> cge - is it a faulty plugin, or a bad configuartion? <2> would it help if it is locally installed with the X issue? <3> i: i like your sn. <3> i: lol <24> I need somebody to help me with my wireless adapter, can anybody do that please? <22> Hso: Probably something faulty with the plugin - either the plugin itself or the plugin configuration. <9> weird <9> google earth is in there <5> seanb64_: you're not having problems booting from CDs are you? it's just that the CD doesn't work fully once it has booted, right? <9> but its not listed <12> I installed Ubuntu Desktop because I like to have a spare desktop, but its main tasks is gonna be web(php)/mysql/ftp... are there any special steps I should take before opening port 80 and 21? <19> I also tried to view the source in Opera so I could whack the video URL into Mplayer, but it can't find Xedit, or something ?_? <9> maybe i need to logout and login <22> kag: no <19> cge - know any fixes for it? :P <9> let me relog <9> brb <11> AJ004, try killall gnome-panel first <25> Anyone know of an app that will let me burn executable CDs? <25> I can't seem to find anything <5> seanb64_: it's quite possible that you will have the same problem with the alternate disk as with the desktop disk. it's also possible you won't... <13> jdiskreport <13> there we go <26> hi, anyone know where i find the latest gnome repositories? <18> nickrud: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WindowsXPUnderQemuHowTo <9> nickrud bingo <9> its there :) <5> seanb64_: if it was me, I would try to troubleshoot what's going wrong before downloading another 700Mb... <22> Hso: Not really, and I'm rather occupied right now installing a kernel with parts of cpufreq.c commented out :) <9> nickrud thanks :) that solved everything <17> !list <0> it has been said that list is you can see a list of things I know at http://ubuntu.cc.com.au or https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbotuUsage <19> uff :P <24> can somebody help me getting my wireless connection up and going please? <26> !repository <19> good luck with that :P <0> I haven't a clue, try searching at http://ubuntu.cc.com.au/, mardi
