<7> mixandgo~ AFAIK 5.10 has no support for sata, be it laptop or desktop. According to the ubuntu-user mailinglist. That fits with my experiences with a desktop machine I have; with dapper the sata works as it should.

<7> aireson~ One last thing you could try if you're interested is to boot your computer with the Knoppix or Linspire live CDs. They're both incredible at autodetecting hardware. And if sound works with any of those, it will be possible to get it working with Ubuntu as well. Just a thought as a last out if you want to go for open software.....
