<0> mcquaid: from apt-get, not synaptic <1> hey, where does grip put the files by default? <2> http://pastebin.ca/41392 <3> probably on the desktop somewhere .. like me <2> don't see what the diff will be, but i'll do it again from cli <1> I can't see it on the desktop <4> redblade: check for ~/.mp3 <2> not sure how i'll capture the output <0> mcquaid: copy paste.. <2> sorry i'm tired <4> redblade: you can also tell grip where to put those files, check the prefs in grip <2> i thought i had to kill gdm but just remembered i used startx <2> one sec <3> I thought I might like to listen to music so I put in a movie .. <3> I can get music that way no problem (usually) <2> sounds kinda funny, i wanted to listen to music so i put in a movie
<2> i wanted to walk the dog so i fed the cat <2> ;) <3> it would be funny if it wasn't real life :) <1> ardchoille, I sorry, but i'm not sure where that is. I have config open but which part? <4> redblade: you might also be interested in an app called Easytag if you plan to edit the mp3 tags. Easytag is in the repos <2> liable, ok purge worked without error reinstalling now <5> Easytag is brilliant. <4> redblade: Config -> Rip -> Ripper -> Rip file format and Config -> Encode -> Encoder -> Encode file format. Those two places have paths that you can set to tell grip where to place the files <6> easytag is great, so is cowbell <2> liable, same thing again as what i posted in pastebin <4> I've never used cowbell, I'll have to take a look at it <3> so .. n equals "who I really am" < - aka "given name" ? <0> mcquaid: what was the ip? <2> the ip? <0> pastebin address <3> ip are the people we worship .. <0> nm <1> ardchoille, I can follow up to Rip file format, but it's a text box and there is nowhere to go from there. <2> http://pastebin.ca/41392 <6> ardchoille: its sort of a dumbed-down easytag, so if you are comfortable with easytag, probably not worth trying. <4> carpediem: ah, ok, thanks for the info. <3> they are our service people - they give us access : without them, we are left alone on our island with those "other objects" <2> liable, i don't get this line: dduser: Warning: The home dir you specified already exists. <4> redblade: that textbox is where grip will place the files <2> what home dir?! <7> i think giving azureus root permissions is not a good idea <1> oh. <6> ardchoille: but, easytag can be a bit cumbersome for beginners. <7> cant update or anything <7> no wonder ppl are having so many issues with it on ubuntu <0> mcquaid: me either, ps aux |grep gdm <8> well the .config is there now <0> mcquaid: if its there, pkill gdm <2> naw it's not <8> but it still errors out <4> redblade: Config -> Encode -> Encoder -> Encode file format is the encoding path <3> I just wanted to find out where to get help when I get my CDs in the mail (if the UPS guy will deliver as promised that is) <8> do i need to edit the .config <3> what do I need to do to be ready to install ubuntu when it arrives to me ? <2> sigh i've never had probs with gdm before <0> mcquaid: /etc/init.d/gdm start from vt1 <4> carpediem: yes, it can be a bit intimidating for newbies, I agree <0> w32: try make menuconfig <1> ~/mp3/%A/%d/%n.wav <3> I know basic only <9> ownerx, did you use to come here with the nick owner? <8> it errors out <1> where the **** is that? <7> yes thats me <2> liable, shouldn't i leave x before doing that? <8> same error <2> and i've run gdm manually without issue, it jsut won't autostart on bootup <0> mcquaid: alt+ctl+F1 <2> ok <4> redblade: ~/mp3/%A/%d/%n.wav mean /home/username/.mp3/Artist/Album/filename/mp3 <0> mcquaid: ok, so look in /etc/rc2.d for a gdm link <8> error 2 & error 127 <0> w32: paste the output to a paster <9> ownerx, great you told me about a work around when the xserver locks running fglrx. something about changing a config option in the gdm.conf file what was the command? <2> no there isn't
<2> there is in rc5.d <8> what is a paster <4> redblade: grip rips to a /wav file first, then encodes to an mp3 <6> liable: nice call, we've been stumped <2> ops sorry there is <1> ok got it. <10> !tell w32 about paste <7> ilba edit /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf and change alwaysrestartserver=false to alwaysrestartserver=true <2> liable, i was going to change: HEED_DEFAULT_DISPLAY_MANAGER=true <0> mcquaid: ok, whats dmesg say about gdm? <11> whenever i start playing music, my ubuntu stops and goes back to the login screen? <9> ownerx thanx man <0> mcquaid: where? <7> np <2> in /etc/init.d/gdm <2> the gdm script rc2.d points to <0> mcquaid: no, dont mess with that script, what version of ubuntu? <2> breezy <0> ok <8> here it is http://pastebin.com/552265 <12> rewt_: with which application? <4> redblade: the reason I know all of this is because I make a habit of using an app then learning how the app does what it does. I the process, I have learned how to rip and encode a cd via the command line, but grip makes it all so much easier. What can I say, I am a documentation junkie <11> Madpilot....I just downloaded a song with aMule....Then I clicked on the file to open it and my ubuntu crashed to login screen <0> mcquaid: ok, so gdm isnt running now? <2> no <0> mcquaid: what error when you start it? <8> did you see it ? <2> no error when started manually <10> w32, install gcc-3.4 g++-3.4 (breezy installs gcc4 by defauklt, but the kernel is compiled using v3.4) <2> let me verify <12> rewt_: if it was an mp3, do you have mp3 playing enabled? Also, does this happen with other music files as well? <4> timfrost: thank you for saying that, that is very good info to know <11> i dont know ive only tried it with this file.... <11> how do I enable mp3 playing? <0> w32: bizzare, re-install build-essential <4> !restricted formats <13> restricted formats is, like, totally, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RestrictedFormats or 'codecs' <12> rewt_: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RestrictedFormats <12> ardchoille: heh :P <2> liable, yeah no error starting gdm <4> hehe <11> kk brb <0> mcquaid: try a reboot <2> hmm, i've rebooted a few times, but i'll try again i guess <2> brb <3> oh I am so happy ! <3> I got my cd drive to play ... thank you :) <11> can i do this gstreamer through synaptics package manager? <12> rewt_: yes <4> catnip: this is one of the best channels on freenode, IMHO :) <14> is there a way to use an alternative mirror for the initial install, i.e. packages that aren't on the cd? <11> is the amarok-gstreamer the same thing? <12> rewt_: no <3> ardchoille : I'm a believer - that was quick ! (said the nonbeliever to "the other object" .. ;)) <0> w32: ?? <7> okay i completely uninstalled azureus from the repos and unpacked to a new directory in my home folder <7> and now it works fine <11> k so once i install gstreamer-mad i should be able to open any mp3 and play it without it crashing? <2> ain't that a kick in the head, it starts now <12> rewt_: in theory, yeah <2> not sure what exactly fixed it, i guess 4th reboot's the charm <4> hehe <11> do i have to start gstreamer as like an app...or does it doe this automatically when i open a mp3? <2> liable, thx for all your suggestions <4> rewt_: I believe the app that plays the mp3 starts it <12> rewt_: totem or whatever should just work w/ the gstreamer codecs <11> do i have to open totem before i double click the mp3? <0> mcquaid: cool <11> or does it not open it automatically? <12> rewt_: if Totem is set up to play your mp3s, it should just work <11> here we go...ill be back if it doesnt work <6> lol
