<0> noone else can see it
<1> tonyarusso you can buy parts and buy ***embly service or ***emble the parts yourself too
<0> point in case:
<2> cloudeh: then save, and run sudo update-grub
<0> ??? ??? ???? ???? ?????
<3> Or, does anyone know how to mount a pcmcia cd drive through grub
<0> ??????, ? ??? ??? ???'?
<4> adriyel, what was that?
<0> eobanb: what did you see?
<4> question marks.
<0> question marks?
<0> yeah, thought so
<5> tonyyarusso, Yango: as someone who has been building PCs for years, it's hard to build a cheaper PC than a Dell (Windows and all)
<6> eobanb: k its up
<7> crimsun: It won't let me edit the file, what do i type in terminal to get full access to the file
<0> it was russian, but it isn't UTF encoded

<0> therefore, noone else can see it
<0> bloody ANNOYING
<4> adriyel, that's just an irc client setting.
<8> carpediem: Crap, and I'd have to give business to WalMart.
<2> cloudeh: use sudo
<0> whaddya mean eobanb ?
<7> crimsun: i dont know how, im new to linux
<4> adriyel, either you or i dont have our irc clients set to utf-8. what irc client are you using?
<1> carpediem I've built my own 'combo' which is more satisfying for me than a dell... I can choose a good mobo, a good disk, etc.
<2> cloudeh: what are you using now to try to edit it?
<0> konversation
<9> Hey everyone, trying to figure out something with grub.
<7> just the normal text editor
<2> cloudeh: gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
<4> adriyel, i don't use it, but i'm sure there's a setting in konversation to use utf-8 as the character set.
<5> tonyyarusso: Well, you could solve your conscious problems by buying the parts, and enslave foreign children to ***emble your PCs cheaper than Dell and Walmart.
<8> carpediem: I've seen some of the no-OS distributors, but none of them have the name recognition and reputation of things like IBM/Lenovo, HP, and the like. I've considered building my own as of late, and might do that for a desktop, but things get trickier in the laptop department.
<10> i read all the text about updateing the packages but yet cant get anything to read divx or mpeg videos
<5> Yango: right, same here. Point is price is no longer a good reason to build your own PC.
<0> eobanb: character set?
<7> crimsun: for some reason the files empty
<0> where is that setting going to be? lol
<4> adriyel, yes. it's probably defaulting to iso latin 1.
<11> Does ubuntu support RPM? If so, how do i use one?
<4> adriyel, i dont know, i dont use konversation.
<2> cloudeh: /boot/grub/menu.lst can't be empty.
<12> rpz no and don't
<1> tonyyarusso yup, laptop is harder, I read a story though about a guy who after a couple of battles was able to get a refund for the value of windows, though
<13> is the X server in ubuntu xfree86?
<4> rpz, not really. what are you trying to do?
<14> carpediem, yeah there is, you can expense the parts rather than depreciate the computer.
<9> Hey everyone. I installed kubuntu but when I load it up I get grub in command line form.
<8> rpz: It can, but is definitely not recommended, and you probably don't need to.
<15> rpz, install alien, use alien to convert rpm to a .deb, and then install them with dpkg
<16> Yango: a few people have managed AFAIK, but it's an effort
<14> rpz, ubuntu has it's own package system, though you probably can install RPM.
<7> crimsun: i entered exactly what you said, it came up with an empty file
<8> Yango: What country?
<17> cloudeh: try gksudo 'gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst' with the quotes
<5> tonyyarusso: Linare sells peices of crap too. I've heard someone was working on selling Ubuntu PCs, but I don't remember who.
<6> eobanb: did you get it
<4> rpz, if it's rather common software you're trying to install, it may already be in ubuntu's repository.
<1> UK, IIRC...
<4> quikstrike, what?
<6> eobanb: i pasted the error
<7> _jason: thanks
<11> eobanb: Im trying to install captive (NTFS filesystem) because Im having no joy with any of the other things suggested
<7> crimsun: got it, deleted the part you told me to delete now what?
<5> PeterFA: not sure I understand what you mean by "expense"
<2> cloudeh: save it, then: sudo update-grub
<18> I got ndiswrapper working.
<18> !kubuntu
<10> how do i get tetum to play mpeg;avi;and other windows format video
<19> I guess kubuntu is Ubuntu+KDE, (not a fork) ; see http://kubuntu.org and you can go to #kubuntu for KDE-related help, or install from Ubuntu: sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop; ISOs: http://releases.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/breezy/
<8> Yango: Think I'd have a chance in either Canada or the US?
<14> carpediem, you can claim it to pay less tax.
<5> PeterFA: you have to have a home business for that, don't you?
<4> quikstrike, no i didnt see it. in messages directed to me, be sure to include my nick in it somewhere, or pm me.
<7> crimsun: done that
<14> carpediem, a job at least.

<20> Does ubuntu have anything comparable to scandisk?
<9> Hey everyone..trying to figure out a problem loading ubuntu from grub command line when I boot the comp.
<18> Does anybody here use an iPod?
<9> er, kubuntu.
<5> PeterFA: well, I have a job...but you can claim computers on your taxes?
<7> crimsun: should i restart??
<13> anyone..? is xfree86 the x-server in ubuntu?
<1> tonyyarusso i guess it depends on how good you are at fighting against burocracy, and how tenacious you are
<21> neilksf: no
<14> carpediem, really depends if you want to itemize, and that depends on if your spouse itemizes, or you find that it's better to itemize.
<4> neilksf, no.
<4> neilksf, ubuntu and kubuntu use xorg.
<14> carpediem, yes, if it's for your job.
<2> cloudeh: no, now pastebin /boot/grub/menu.lst
<22> rpz: SFS = samba file system in case you were wondering...
<13> eobanb/agrjag: thanks
<8> Yango: Well, I can have fight and persistance, but no monetary resources for lawyers or anything.
<0> I'm in xchat right now eobanb
<5> PeterFA: own a house, pretty much have to itemize. I don't use my home computer at my job...it stays at home.
<0> I'll try it again
<11> frogzoo: I was, but im still no closer to fixing the problem ;(
<14> carpediem, but only so much that you use for the job. If you use 50% of the time for the job then you can only claim 50%.
<18> carpediem: I fixed ndiswrapper all on my own.
<0> ??, ??? ??? ???? ?????
<5> darthbutcher: nice
<4> adriyel, did you set xchat to use utf-8?
<23> is there anything else besides gnomad2 that will let me put songs on my creative zen? because my zen doesnt automount when i plug it in
<0> eobanb: I'm in xchat
<14> carpediem, got an office in your home?
<22> rpz: what's the problem?
<0> how do I set xchat to use it?
<3> Is it possible to boot to a pcmcia device through grub?
<10> how do i get tetum to play mpeg;avi;and other windows format video
<5> PeterFA: an office I use to play with Linux, and little more ;)
<24> 3
<10> or any other program
<4> adriyel, i believe it's in the server list window.
<14> carpediem, well, you can claim an office.
<1> tonyyarusso well, a windows license doesn't justify lawyers presence, anyway, so... if I were you I'd ask first, and then choose the laptop with the best chance for it to work. Google for those stories, they might serve you as precedents, IIRC it was Toshiba.
<23> is there anything else besides gnomad2 that will let me put songs on my creative zen? because my zen doesnt automount when i plug it in
<8> !tell AntMaz about restricted
<22> rublind: yes, pcmcia boot like a hard drive - the bios needs to see it though & make it available for booting
<0> server list?
<7> crimsun: http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/8583 here
<5> PeterFA: even if I do no business from the office?
<23> is there anything else besides gnomad2 that will let me put songs on my creative zen? because my zen doesnt automount when i plug it in
<0> um, no
<9> Hey everyone..trying to figure out a problem loading kubuntu from grub command line when I boot the comp.
<14> carpediem, no
<3> frogzoo: the bios doens't see it though.
<11> frogzoo: I need to mount a physical NTFS drive. I've tried using the thing built into Gnome, and a script recommended on here but it claims there's no valid win/mac partitons. In the 'System -> Admin -> Disks' it shows up as NTFS
<5> PeterFA: ah well
<4> adriyel, yes. choose the network you're on (freenode), choose Edit... and then set the character set in the window that then opens.
<2> cloudeh: looks good, now reboot
<22> rublind: then you either get a bios update or you're sol, soz
<0> eobanb: found it
<8> Yango: Okay, will look into this further, probably over the next few years, since I hope this one lasts a while. (June '05 purchase)
<0> thanks
<0> brb
<23> is there anything else besides gnomad2 that will let me put songs on my creative zen? because my zen doesnt automount when i plug it in
<7> crimsun: okay
<15> crimsun, it doesn't have XP added to it though
<3> frogzoo: well, then I'm sol.
<18> carpe: Now, I am doing all the updates and installs I did on my laptop.
<18> :-p
<18> Firstly, installing KUbuntu.
<15> cloudeh, you need some sort of XP entry in menu.lst to be able to boot into XP
<7> crimsun: i actually tried that earlier with jason and it returned an error 12: invalid device requested
<9> I installed Kubuntu, but when I try and boot it, I get grub command line.
<5> taylor_: I use gnomad2 and neutrino, I still think gnomad2 is easier. I could never get kzenexplorer to install properly
<22> rpz: that NTFS script for mounting was written for 386 environments - on the mac the device names may be different, you'll need to check - or google for 'ntfs mac linux mount' or similiar
<0> ok
<0> let's try this again]
<11> frogzoo: It's not mac...
