<0> Chair, I don't know
<1> hey acidspoon can you join #arrick?
<2> bliss1_, best to just ask it, someone will answer if they know
<0> Do I need to do anything special with dapper to have it work properly with an ati card? (9700 pro)?
<3> Mudpilot: ok
<2> Motivez, you'll need ATI's drivers for 3d, but for 2d it should work OOTB
<4> Motivez: no different then any other distrobutions
<5> when it says uncomment, it refers to removing the "#", correct?
<4> if you're referring to XGL.. that's a bit different
<6> you should be able to follow the breezy sticky for install drivers
<4> jeeaar: yeah
<0> Well it should load X initially then, I'm just talking about plain X
<0> Would it be better to install breezy first and then update to Dapper?
<6> either way is the means to the same end
<6> i would just install dapper
<2> Motivez, if you've already got the Dapper install ISO, just use that

<4> if X doesn't start then check your logs
<6> his logs seem ****ed
<0> I have it installed, but it's not loading X is what I'm saying
<0> I have no idea why the installer is prompting me for this braille stuff
<4> check /var/log/XFree86.0.log i think
<0> Only thing that's connected to my machine besides my monitor/keyboard/mouse/router is a printer
<0> and it detects that fine
<4> ...
<4> just say no to braile if you're not blind
<0> There's no "no" option
<0> It asks me where it's installed
<0> I hit 'go back' and it installs it to default location
<7> I just dist-upgraded from breezy to dapper and now it hard-locks at a screen saying X is broken :P ... any advice?
<4> what's the error?
<4> nopaste?
<0> heh, well maybe it's something with this daily build then if someone else is having the asme issue with X
<4> haha, you're using the daily build?
<7> Any workaround? I'm booted from a Breezy live CD
<4> well kleed, need to know the error to give you a work around
<0> celerex, you have a different link for a dapper ISO I can download?
<0> I don't mind reinstalling
<8> anyone having a problem with the framebuffer when trying to instal dapper flight 6?
<9> dj_ you got a webpage or mixes available on the 'net?
<7> No real error to report ... the normal "Your X has failed click "yes" to see why" screen in ncurses but an overlay of a dapper CLI login and my mouse/keyboard don't respond
<10> hehe thnx for the help earlier, but that method didn't extract all the files i needed in the .deb file
<10> binutils is what i needed to get for the AR command
<9> opps that was offtopic
<11> Um not yet, I have a url you may want to check now and again, www.anomalydjservice.com
<11> Look for something like DJ MIXES
<2> Motivez, if you're trying the daily builds of Dapper, expect oddness. also, try #ubuntu+1 for Dapper questions
<0> Yeah, I have, it's not very active there =p
<0> I dont mind oddness, do you have a link for flight6 or whatever?
<12> i had a problem with dapper flight 6 today, whatever i p***ed onto it (nodma, acpi=off, etc.) the kernel would not read the disc at all (DSO timeout? buffer I/O error /dev/hdc), has anyone had this problem before? the cdrom works fine in windows 98
<12> and i've check the disc with MD5, it's fine
<12> *checked
<13> !X
<14> methinks x is a portable, network-transparent window system.
<3> when i type apt-get update will not resolve see http://pastebin.ca/49243 for settings
<13> anyone know how i might install a more lightweight X (more lightweight than gnome)?
<15> then updates come each day
<12> all the info i could get from the machine was that it was a via-based motherboard with a pentium 3 cpu
<7> Double_D: Try XFCE
<13> kleedrac: thanks.
<12> does anyone have more cheat codes for the live cd boot?
<6> openbox or fluxbox is nice double_d
<12> like one for via-based IDE controllers?
<13> ChairmanKaga: okay, i'll check them out. thanks.
<16> i'm trying to get NetManager working
<16> the nm-applet is running, but its not appearing in the tray
<5> will vlc play mp3 without any extra codecs?
<16> jeeaar no
<12> double_d: if you find them too primitive, there are ways to speed up gnome like using a lighter theme/engine, disabling some gnome service programs, etc.
<5> where can i get the codecs?
<16> get the gstreamer ugly package
<16> enable the Multiverse in Synaptic
<6> Double: I personally use gnome with openbox as my WM
<13> MistaED: that sounds promising, what are some service programs I could disable?
<6> its pretty nice
<17> why doesn't ubuntu show the wireless networks available?
<5> then can i just sudo apt-get install gstreamer?

<13> ChairmanKaga: okay, i'll pay some special attention to it. taking a look at fluxbox atm...
<12> double_d: not too sure myself actually
<3> DBO: ping are you ok man
<13> MIstaED: okay, thanks, though.
<12> double_d: using openbox for your wm and using a lighter gtk theme (there are some in the repos, just search for gtk2-engines) that will give a nice speed-up
<6> 'sudo apt-get openbox obconf
<12> a gtk2 theme with no pixmaps, so like a squarish-3d one should do the trick, there are nice and light looking ones though
<17> why doesn't ubuntu show the wireless networks available?
<6> words to live by
<6> gummy: because it isn't windows
<17> ChairmanKaga: that may be, but its a very good feature
<6> Good point gummy, but unfortunately i don't know of any program that gives you that functionality
<18> Does Ubuntu use generic sound drivers or is it possible to install one that provides better performance?
<17> isnt' there a way to have ubuntu display the available networks so I can just pick the one i want?
<13> MIstaED: nice, a high performance theme already speeded things up quite a bit!
<6> rhine, what kind of sound card do you have?
<18> Avance '97
<19> G'morning people. Yesterday I started up my system, and when I logged it it said the X session was ended within 10 seconds. So I try again, and again it sais it was ened. I could only click "ok", after which I returned to the gdm login screen. The only way I can get some functionality is logging in thru an Xterm safe mode and then starting KDE (which keeps whining about the "dcopserver")
<6> well, you can use ESD if you are lucky
<18> Let me check the correct name
<6> rhine: probably AC'97
<18> Yep thats the right one
<20> how do i copy a file in root
<20> prompt
<21> hery
<2> Znort, did you get some error msg about "Xauthority" or something similar?
<21> hey
<6> rhine, read this: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=101125
<21> I'm not sure what was going on
<19> Yes, I did. Something about _ICE
<6> really good faq on configuring sound
<22> Concretesledge: cp filename /path/to/go
<23> Anyone here have an Atheros AR5212 Wireless NIC (mine's in a Toshiba Satellite A75)...I've read that it works with Ubuntu, and have had partial success, but am still having some issues. Please PM if familiar with it. :)
<2> Znort, ".ICEauthority"?
<18> Thank you ChairmanKaga
<19> Indeed
<21> I held down C, and the setup came up and all, and the ubuntu logo came up (in odd colours) and then the screen went blank for about 10 minutes and nothing happened
<2> Znort, in the safe mode prompt, just delete that file, then type "shutdown -r now" to reboot
<19> And where is it located? In /etc/X11 I guess?
<21> is that normal?
<6> alex, did you try just hitting 'enter'?
<21> ChairmanKaga, yep
<18> Is thier a torrent client that will allow me to download certain files?
<21> I tried enter, space and escape and moving the mouse around
<2> Znort, no, it's in your own user directory
<19> ok
<23> certain files out of the torrent Rhine?
<6> wierd, try redownloading the .iso and md5 checking it
<22> Rhine: Azureus
<19> Any idea what may have caused this so I can prevent this in the future?
<18> Ok thank you :0
<23> BitComet will, if that's what you're looking for
<6> just to make sure that it isn't a bad burn
<6> uTorrent is nice as well
<18> Can I install through Azureus?
<6> nada
<18> I mean Synaptic
<6> yes
<2> Znort, "rm ~/.ICEauthority" - and I can't remember what causes it, something to do with sudo/root errors
<6> 'sudo apt-get install azureus'
<6> make sure you have the java runtime installed as well
<19> Madpilot, thanks a bunch =)
<21> ChairmanKaga, it was using the live CD
<6> alex, same idea
<6> could be a bad burn
<22> Rhine: not sure, i think you have to get the .deb from the azureus site and install it through dpkg -i
<6> what program are you burning it with
<24> any good web-cam programs?
<21> ugh....
<22> Rhine: then synaptic can manage it
<21> Chairman: I got the free CD
<2> !+azureus
<14> I guess azureus is a popular bittorent client written in Java, installation instructions can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AzureusHowTo
<22> hehe nice
