<0> so, what should I use to play movies?
<1> usually i use the installer's auto-partition scheme -- essentially a root partition with the boot loader on it and a swap partition...
<2> beefsprocket, how big is the harddrive?
<3> CanadianSnow: Totem, Kaffeine, VLC, mplayer, xine-ui... pick your choice
<4> caglar_: art.gnome.org faq section maybe.
<1> but this time i want to try having a seperate partition for /home so i don't have to backup my files with new os installations etc. and possibly a partition for /usr?
<5> Why can't I eject my CD? The button doesn't work, right click > eject doesn't work, umount doesn't work. I need to eject and put in another CD for the installation to continue. >_<
<2> CanadianSnow, mplayer is good. I've yet to try VLC, but I hear it's awesome. You need the w32codecs package, first, though.
<0> Totem wont work
<6> hi, any one here with the Segmentation Fault problem on FF1.5.0.1 ?
<7> rumor has it dapper has gone stable
<1> the problem is that i don't know what size to specify for each partition -- what size is adequate etc.
<7> does that mean there's also a stable PPC release, or does that take more time?
<8> can someone help me get this program running in ubuntu?: http://logic2k.humnet.ucla.edu/download.cfm
<0> how do I get the w32codecs then?
<9> anyone here use gizmo

<10> how do I disable the minimize animation?
<11> !opera
<12> [opera] not in the Ubuntu repositories, but you can always download the latest Opera .deb package from http://www.opera.com/download/ and then see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/OperaBrowser
<3> !tell CanadianSnow about w32codecs
<3> !tell CanadianSnow about restrictedformats
<4> Mosi: lies! https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DapperFlight5
<2> cshaman, how big is the harddrive?
<5> No one?
<2> cshaman, also, are you dual booting? How much memory do you have?
<1> Drac[Server], the size of the harddrive is 8.6 gigabytes
<1> Drac[Server], i am not dual-booting.
<13> !java
<12> To install Java/Sun Java see Java on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RestrictedFormats and also see !javadebs
<1> Drac[Server], I have 128mb of RAM
<13> !javadebs
<14> hello
<15> Guys, I got a serial port terminal, can I use this to install Ubuntu on a monitor-less PC, if I connect to it with an ethernet cable?
<7> dabaR: thanks :)
<16> !tell dan_ about mp3
<8> or rather, can soemone help me run an exe that doesn't work in wine?
<14> anybody know about w32codecs at amd64-based system?
<16> how do i play mp3s?
<3> !mp3
<12> well, mp3 is a non-free format. To enable mp3 capability, read https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RestrictedFormats
<0> thanks gtg bye
<2> cshaman, okay. You'll want to make a separate home partition for backup, too. This is a wise decision. Go to "manually edit partition table" - I suggest ReiseFS for slow harddrives. Make a 3GB ReiserFS partition for root and mark the bootable flag, then make 5GB a ReiserFS home partition. Finally, make the remaining space swap. The partition is easy to work with. Don't worry.
<17> mikebot> you can check for compatibility on www.winehq.com I believe
<10> how do I disable the minimize animation?
<8> IdleOne, it's like a program a professor made that i have to run
<18> hello i would like to know what i ahve to do to dual boot ubuntu and windows?
<8> IdleOne, it isn't like WoW or anything
<17> mikebot> chances are it wont work then
<14> we2by_, i think in gnome config
<8> IdleOne, there is no way to get it to run in ubuntu?
<1> Drac[Server], thanks very much
<8> IdleOne, it's just an exe and some text files
<2> cshaman, the home partition will make reinstallation/upgrading much easier for you - it'll save your main files and program preferences in a separate partition that can be retained in any kind of reinstallation of Linux.
<17> mikebot> you can try cedega
<8> !cedega
<10> fade_, where is gnome config?
<19> And now I'm _adding_ Eclipse to my installed applications, if this works it's superb! :)
<10> how do I open it?
<17> mikebot> I understand but it doesnt mean that it will be supported by wine
<8> IdleOne, this progam doesn't need directx api
<8> IdleOne, oh i don't care if i need to use wine or not, i just need to get it to run
<14> etc/gnome may be. i'm newbie too )))
<20> mikebot, what's the program written in? Can you get the source code?
<1> Drac[Server], is it worth making a partition for /usr? i wouldn't think so because the file structure could change among different linuces, but just out of curiosity...
<21> how do I get a text bar in nautilus instead of the directory icons in under the menu?
<8> anto9us, i can check the documentation, one moment
<22> caglar_, Ctrl+L
<4> z6bt: I install windows first to the first partition, and then install ubuntu after that. It just works from there on.
<8> this is the program btw:
<8> http://logic2k.humnet.ucla.edu/download.cfm
<14> anybody here use amd64-based mashine?
<2> z6bt, First make a Windows installation, defrag the harddrive in Windows, then use gparted on an ubuntu live CD to resize the partition down to your liking (leave a good amount if it's for gaming). Then install Ubuntu on the remaining space and be sure to say yes to the option to write the GRUB bootloader to the master boot record.
<23> I use AMD64
<24> !1.0.0.0
<21> Madpilot: how do I make it applied for everytime?
<2> cshaman, No. Not at all. That's just the next default. Make it swap.
<21> because when I click on another folder it gets normal again

<14> Cryption, do you have installed w32codecs?
<8> also, the documentation says this: At present, the program runs only in a computer lab, and only on a PC. It can run on a MAC with a PC emulator, and on Windows running over VMWare for Linux.
<18> Drac[Server]: its not for gaming do you have a suggesstion of how big the partition should be resized?
<23> Yes i do
<14> Cryption, i don't find it
<14> where?
<23> Did you grab them through Synaptic?
<14> no
<18> Drac[Server]: i read somewhere that i dont need to use gparted with a live cd because theres an option to resize during the install is thsi true?
<23> What distro are you using?
<19> and now I'm running Eclipse :)
<10> fade_, just found how to do it :)
<22> caglar_, I'm actually not sure - have a look thru Edit->Prefs
<11> !1.0.0.0
<14> breezy
<23> Ubuntu?
<23> k
<19> is everything this simple?!?!? :)
<20> mikebot, it looks like the exe is just an installer, maybe you can decompress the files from it?
<14> 5.10]
<14> 5.10
<2> z6bt, it is, but I'd favor gparted. It's up to you.
<23> Load up Synaptic (Package Manager) and search for w32codecs
<8> Antiquitus, i don't know what that means
<8> anto9us, **
<23> They are not installed by default
<14> i'll try
<10> 10 more days for the next Ubuntu version.. :\
<23> 10 more days?
<2> z6bt, if it's not for gaming, and you're not going to install or save much on that partition.. um.. 5GB should be fine. If it's a big drive, give it a bit more. Also consider making a fat32 partiton in the Ubuntu installer's manual editor if you'd like, so you can share files between Windows and Linux via a partition.
<23> Try 6 wks
<22> !tell fade_ about w32codecs
<10> Cryption, i think so
<20> mikebot, try opening the exe with Archive Manager
<18> aright
<10> wait, that was the realease shedule for fc5
<23> April 15th was the Release Date for 6.04
<18> thanx
<23> Now it is up for delay
<10> next ubuntu release will be in April
<19> allthou I didn't get the latest version :/ ;)
<23> Maybe
<14> Madpilot, i have seen that))
<23> Read on launchpad
<23> Mark's proposal is there
<4> !enter
<12> Please don't use the "enter" key as punctuation! It spams the channel and is annoying.
<2> Cryption, what's all the hype about Dapper having problems? My various Dapper installations are running fine. o_O
<23> and this channel will be used to debate the delay
<8> anto9us, Could not open "Logic2K.exe" Archive type not supported.
<23> I don't know
<23> My dapper installs function correctly
<8> anto9us, or open the install one with it?
<4> Cryption: it will be no such thing, there are other ubuntu channels for that.
<1> Drac[Server], i appreciate every bit of help you've given me! should i mark the swap partition as 'primary' or 'logical'
<14> Cryption, may be i have a trouble with repositories list? i can't find it
<23> k
<23> I am on FC4 right now
<20> mikebot, install cabextract and try again
<25> hows everyone doing?
<14> Madpilot, thanks anyway
<22> fade_, follow the URL the bot sent you - w32codecs are not in Ubuntu repos anymore
<2> cshaman, I don't think it matters. I always go with primary, though. You're very welcome. Enjoy your new Ubuntu system. ^_^
<26> Drac[Server], Dapper will be supported much longer than older ones have been
<23> I'm sorry but I don't have Dapper installed in my VMWare at home
<8> anto9us, is that in synaptic?
<13> java should be installed by default in ubuntu
<26> Drac[Server], maybe they want to be sure to get it right
<20> mikebot, yes, in universe repository
<14> !w32codecs
<12> somebody said w32codecs was a compilation of binary win32 A/V codecs for many popular proprietary formats not currently supported by free implementations under linux. See http://tinyurl.com/e4a5s to install
<13> its a pain in the *** to use all the java-tools and crap to install
<2> stpere, ah, I understand. gtk-gnutella doesn't work on it yet, I noticed. >_>
<8> sudo apt-get install cabextract
