<0> carlk: how safe is that?
<1> randabis: I did sudo aticonfig --initial and I see it updated my xorg.conf
<2> metalhedd: it says partition 1 and free space
<3> nuts: yeah windows is gone
<3> :)
<4> the ubuntu installer lets you create/remove and even resize partitions - very well tested, so very safe
<2> oh well its not a big deal
<5> RemyLaptop: weird, its not making a device node?
<2> i had nothing that i really needed to save
<6> Toma- How would I check that ?
<1> randabis: can you look at my xorg.conf in #pastebin?
<7> vladuz976: why not shrink your / partition & create new partition after it, & install dapper there?
<3> nuts: what carlk just said would work for you as well, to install windows again beside linux
<0> frogzoo: yeah, maybe good idea
<5> RemyLaptop: are there any /dev/sd* devices?
<6> how do I check ?

<0> frogzoo: what's a good repartioning program?
<6> RemyLaptop = noobie :)
<1> vladuz976: parted
<7> vladuz976: parted, qtparted, gparted - but you'll need to run it from the live cd
<4> btw - if you resize an NTFS partition, give it 10 min or so. it doesn't report any progress, but you will see the HD light blinking
<1> qtparted
<5> RemyLaptop: ls /dev/sd*
<6> nope
<6> nothing there
<4> I was tempted to reboot, which I am sure whoule have been bad
<2> thanks for the help
<2> i will reinstall windows later
<3> nuts: n/p
<8> ok this bastard keeps giving me a command not found error
<5> RemyLaptop: possible a hotplug/udev problem...
<8> sudo ./install winetools-0.9jo-III
<8> is it like that?
<0> frogzoo: maybe i'll put it on a different drive better
<1> can someone look at my xorg.conf at #pastebin? I think its fishy
<9> Ramnath: what did you expect that to do?
<4> RemyLaptop: Toma-, is there anything that says it should look like a drive?
<10> lil help needed if possible...seems ubuntu config'd my onboard vid diver instead of my PCI vid card....first question how can i make Ubuntu go into "safe mode" to edit xorg.conf?
<8> something
<5> carlk: hu?
<1> (I have two ati devices, both on pci:1,0,0
<1> )
<3> TOP TEN CONFIG FILES TO ALWAYS ALWAYS BACK UP?
<7> jquixote: post the pastebin url
<3> xorg.conf
<1> frogzoo: I'm in the #pastebin channel
<9> the whole of /etc..
<1> I thought you guys used that
<11> oo oo .vimrc
<5> menu.lst
<7> !tell jquixote about pastebin
<6> carlk, dunno
<12> i need help im trying to install ubuntu breeze but halts on network Configuration...
<3> notos: like it freezes?
<0> anybody know if there are iso for i686 or k7?
<7> Ramnath: no - cd into winetoolg-... & run the install script
<6> carlk, the software says it might need a different port than the default, but I can't find what port it's ***igned to.
<12> yep
<12> in a blue screen
<1> frogzoo, randabi: http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/10044
<3> notos: freaky... what kind of network adapter do you ahve?
<13> ok guys thx for all ur help catchya :)
<4> RemyLaptop: looks like the port is fine: "USB Rio found at address 3"
<13> im goin 2 have to learn bit more abt apt
<1> frogzoo: it looks like that after I did sudo aticonfig --initial
<12> D-Link RTL8139
<1> frogzoo: you want me to paste the whole thing?
<6> ok, gotta go fellas, will try later.
<12> and an onboard Davicom Eth...
<0> the 64 bit edition of ubuntu, does it use 64 bit packages only?
<7> jquixote: not necessary - you need to specify EITHER fglrx OR ati - not both
<12> Speed Stream 5200 router
<3> try disabling the onboard or removing the card.
<1> frogzoo: thought so
<3> one of them is garbage
<7> vladuz976: 64bit is a pita - best not go there
<1> frogzoo: so just comment out the old (upper) one?

<6> carlk the software for it expects the address to be a hex address
<7> jquixote: yes - the whole device section
<0> frogzoo: yeah that's what i am wondering about, i wanna get a laptop with amd turion 64, but better to stick to k7 no?
<6> like 0x278
<1> frogzoo: rgr
<12> :O i will try that thankyou for the idea
<3> notos: no problem :)
<7> vladuz976: yes indeedy
<5> 686 kernels run fine on k8 systems
<14> vladuz976, that processor will be fine in the 32bit version
<8> cd into winetoolg...? what does that mean?
<4> RemyLaptop: but "USB Rio found at address 3" - I don't thnk it would print that if it wasn't the right address
<0> Half-Left: it's a crappy processor though, isn't it?
<1> frogzoo: ok, the deed is done
<15> I have a thinkpad t43. I could not make a dual boot out of it (long story) so I bought another hard drive and an ultrabay adapter. So I have two hard drives in my laptop. I moved the ubuntu one to the ultrabay slot, and the windows in the original slot. Now when I try to boot ubuntu it says something like "sda1 not found" ? Does anyone know how I can fix this?
<14> vladuz976, why would it be?
<6> carlk, that address doesn't tell me anything though...
<1> frogzoo: ok, I have to reboot now.. cross your fingers
<0> Half-Left: i dunno, that's just what i heard from some people, but that's all i can afford
<6> the format for the command is "rio -p 0x247 -d" where -p 0x247 is the address of the RIO
<7> jquixote: gl :)
<6> I've tried all variations of '3', and still nothing
<14> vladuz976, sound good to me
<7> Ramnath: cd winetools-0.9jo-III; sudo ./install
<16> man gnome lags a lot for me, when i move windows around
<14> vladuz976, look on tomshardware.com and look for a review
<2> with linux do i still need a firewall
<4> RemyLaptop: im saying you don't need to know anything about the address
<0> Half-Left: thanks
<2> if so can i use my current firewall from norton
<4> RemyLaptop: but thats just a guess
<2> or zonealarm
<4> nuts: yes. put it near your door to distract criminals
<7> nuts: never a bad idea
<14> vladuz976, A athlon64 will fly in a 32bit distro so dont worry about it
<17> lol
<18> haha
<11> nuts: take a look at the firestarter package
<0> Half-Left: yeah but that's an athlon, i am talking about a turion
<3> nuts: just a bit of warning. forget everything you know about software firewalls. they're NOTHING like they are in windows.
<2> gebharra: where is the firestarter package
<14> vladuz976, I ***ume thats the mobile version by it's name
<0> Half-Left: if that's the only differnce, then i guess there's no worries, i thought it's like the celeron of the intels
<11> nuts: universe
<14> vladuz976, no, I dont think so somehow, AMD dont do things like that :-)
<10> ok... what program do i use in rescue mode to edit xorg.conf?
<18> vim
<19> Xenguy, gebharra: I figured it out: apt-cache stats | grep Normal | awk '{print $3}'
<7> BlingFree: sudo gedit
<17> vi
<10> thank you
<7> emacs :p
<14> vladuz976, i'm pretty sure it would piss my athlonxp 2600+ and my system is fast so
<2> how to get to desktop faster by mininzing the other stuff. In windows it was windows +D
<20> any idea why the ubuntu live cd is locking up when its configuring hardware (it locks up right after it determines the keyboard type)
<18> depends upon ur desktop , guess theres one in Gnome.
<21> keyboard shortcut question: Eject is 0xcc .. What keys are those?
<0> Half-Left: i guess it'll be ok too, i was just worried coz i do wanna compile large stuff from time to time and on a laptop i didn't know how it will be
<11> nuts: Ctrl-Alt-D
<17> I have mobile sempron 3000
<17> it is fine
<2> ok thanks
<2> guess i have to reinstall windows xp today becuase now i find out that i cant play online poke
<2> poker
<17> You have an Ati card?
<10> to save on time... is it possible for me to edit ubuntu's xorg.conf from this Knoppix live cd?
<11> nuts: does it use activex?
<3> nuts, look into wine, or maybe even vmware
<3> mmmm vmware
<11> i thought there was a company that made an activex shim layer for linux
<3> BlingFree: sure. you'll have to boot back to test it though
<22> !dma

<4> nuts: i bet you can play online poker
