<1> farous, that was a semi inebriated cl***ification, one I'd not make normally
<2> holas
<0> nickrud: frankly it is insightfull one
<3> http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/15584
<4> fcalise usernam ALL=(ALL) /etc/acpi/sleep.sh sleep
<0> cl***ification based on users :)
<5> SurfnKid, I just want to erase that list.. and I managed to erase some already
<6> hey, guys. I was thinking about playing a game of enemy territory, but searching synaptic yeilded no results. can anyone tell me the package name?
<7> xeon3d: ok hang on
<5> but there are still some packages left
<4> err maybe a colen in that
<8> Arafangion: even if I'm running gnome, I am still able to install software built for KDE right?
<4> fcalise usernam ALL=(ALL) :/etc/acpi/sleep.sh sleep
<7> xeon3d: erase it? so how are you going to update
<0> RamiK***ab: for sure

<9> intelikey: thank you, I was missing the (ALL)
<1> cl***ification based on here an only a few mailling lists: limited
<10> yo hommies how I extract .tar.gz files in a terminal?
<8> farous: awesome, just wanted to make sure
<3> SAM_theman, tar zxvf
<5> SurfnKid, I tried to install some packages with dpkg that didn't work out alright.
<11> SAM_theman, tar -xvzf file
<4> fcalise or could be localhost
<8> farous: check your dialog window
<4> more secure
<10> Thanks
<5> SurfnKid, none of them were installed but somehow they managed to stay on apt-get list...
<9> (localhost)
<0> RamiK***ab: you need to be registered to send pms
<5> SurfnKid, so now I just want apt-get to forget that I tried to install them.
<8> ah lol
<12> my system is prime stable at 2.5ghz
<8> wall what's your AIM SN?
<0> RamiK***ab: so i did not recive any of yours though i knew why ;)
<8> if you have one
<13> RamiK***ab, The thing I like about using vim, is that regardless of the situation, if it is a text file (ANY text file), written on ANY OS, I can edit it, thus, I can use it to configure my BIND dns config files, my apache.conf files, and other administrative files, plus do coding in Python, Java, C... Without having to learn new features just because I want to type a bit of SQL.
<8> well I should register then
<12> i can get it to boot at 2.8 but prime fails after only 5minutes
<14> k guys i think i figured out my issue with xgl... me any some other people just installed off of apt, and we all experienced the same problem: no gconf key. so tell people to avoid installing xgl until the bug if fixed.
<13> RamiK***ab, Yes, you can install and use KDE software even if you are using Gnome.
<7> xeon3d: oh i see, dont know what to do there :/
<7> xeon3d: mine was failing to update-upgrade forever
<8> Arafangion: you're right, I like VIM a lot too. I have been using it for quite some time too
<7> xeon3d: its a big problem with synaptic /behind routers
<8> Arafangion: It is VERY versatile without a dobut
<8> doubt
<7> xeon3d: i thought you were having the same problem
<5> SurfnKid, my problem has nothing to do with routers...
<13> RamiK***ab, Indeed. I used it to take LaTeX notes at uni last year as well :)
<5> SurfnKid, those packages are marked by apt-get to be installed and I just want to unmark them.
<4> fcalise let me caution you on security, unless you chmod 500 sleep.sh you are running a security hole there.
<7> xeon3d: i know, mine is, but i thought initially your apt-get question had something to do with mine
<8> heh, yeah I am working on getting LaTeX templates setup for that actually :)
<5> SurfnKid, oh ... ok. :)
<7> xeon3d: oh erase those only, i see, how did you do it
<13> RadiantFire, LaTeX is one area where I use gvim instead, and use the latex plugin.
<12> pennitrateing security holes is illegal isnt it
<14> anybody pick up about telling people not to install xgl from apt for a bit? there's errors in the packages... no gconf key gets installed for compiz... tell people NOT to install XGL.
<14> thanks.
<4> fcalise if users can edit the script and then run it as root what keeps them from editing it to say /bin/bash and bam they have full root access.
<0> Arafangion: your autocompl need some work ;)
<8> Arafangion: ah, they have a LaTeX plug for gvim? I like that
<5> SurfnKid, I could remove some... by doing sudo dpkg -r package-name...
<13> farous, Indeed :(
<9> intelikey, ok thank you, is there any alternative then for me to allow my user to run a sleep script from a fluxbox menu?
<15> Is there any way to install Ubuntu without having to loos all my files and windows operationg sistem?
<7> xeon3d: so maybe its just tedious :P
<4> fcalise not really just make the script secure and you should be fine.
<8> Dyegov: of course
<16> Dyegov: yes, just install it
<5> can anyone help me make apt-get forget some packages?
<7> xeon3d: brb i have to reconnect my modem
<13> RamiK***ab, The thing about emacs and vim is that there are tools for nearly everything. For instance, they both have a script that allows them to operate as an irc client, but I seriously hope nobody uses them.
<0> hope you like ubuntu RamiK***ab take care
<10> Yo guys,I have this problem what does it mean? (http://pastebin.com/703693)

<15> it says that I have to format
<16> Dyegov: Ubuntu will give you the option to resize your Windows partitions
<15> becaus I just have 1 partition
<15> I don't know how to do that
<8> farous: thanks habibi
<8> farous: what's your SN?
<16> Dyegov: yes, Ubuntu will allow you do resize you Windows partition to make space for Ubuntu, when you do the install
<5> is there a channel for apt related help?
<8> hey BRB guys
<15> could you please help me in private? here I can't read with all the other people's questions
<12> i think that it is easier to use one hd for linux and one for windos
<13> Dyegov, Does your client have nick highlighting?
<17> how to check a disk for errors ?
<18> ne1 know if there is a tcpdump perl module?
<13> Dyegov, If so, ask your question, and just pay attention to highlighted lines :)
<19> where can i find a guide that will tell me how to copy my entire home directory to a new partition specifically for that use?
<17> is there a safe utility to check a disk for errors ?
<13> Dyegov, ***uming that their tab keys work... :(
<15> yes, it has, but it gets me confused
<15> anyway
<20> quick non-ubuntu-specific question: will wine be able to detect my MIDI keyboard if I'm running FL Studio with it?
<15> how do I resize my partitions?
<21> can anyone help me connect to my local net? Im using kubuntu and Ive downloaded smb4k, applied sudo permissions.. it sees the network but can't connect
<19> Dyegov, i just did it with gparted
<13> JohnsonE, Unlikely, imho. Wine does not give access to hardware.
<17> is there a safe utility to check a disk for errors ?
<16> CaptainMorgan: delete the "WORKGROUP"
<15> but sladen said I could do that from the isntalation
<20> ok thanks.
<4> Vio man badblocks
<19> Dyegov, gparted is on the live cd
<1> Dyegov, sladen has a lot of info, but you'll have to think as well.
<17> ok where shuld i use this command
<19> where can i find a guide that will tell me how to copy my entire home directory to a new partition specifically for that use?
<1> sladen, :)
<4> Vio man fsck if you meant file-system rather than disk
<17> on shell while my disk is mounted ?
<21> sladen, why?
<15> it's on the live cd? ok, i'll try
<19> yep
<17> I mean bad clusters or bad sectors
<4> vio yes
<15> This is my first time with linux, that's wy I don't understand anything
<4> Vio man badblocks
<17> is it ok to do so while the partition is mounted
<22> i can't open network folders from vlcplayer huh? is there any xvid players that will open network files?
<23> to play dvds in dapper do i have to get totem-xine?
<21> sladen, further, how do I delete it using smb4k?
<24> um, hey, I tried to change my hostname, and now sudo doesn't seem to work
<4> vio yes
<16> CaptainMorgan: for some reason it only works when using machine/workgroup
<24> it says "unable to look up hactar [that's the hostname] via gethostbyname()
<17> ok
<16> CaptainMorgan: and doesn't if the worksgroup box is not empty
<25> i imagine keep is a frontend for tar -- is it worthwhile?
<4> Vio man badblocks and read about safe testing. aka read only
<19> anyone, im following this guide: http://ubuntu.wordpress.com/2006/01/29/move-home-to-its-own-partition/ and at one point it says to do: find . -depth -print0 | cpio --null --sparse -pvd /mnt/newhome/ why do i get a permission denied error?
<19> i tried it with sudo too
<16> vio: get smart-utils
<1> Dyegov[Away], the hardest thing to do here is help someone install ubuntu, because we do not want to hurt your windows. Partitioning space for ubuntu requires you to understand what you are doing.
<16> roostishaw: just use cp -a from to
<26> and that's a real big problem nickrud
<19> sladen, will that get it all?
<4> roostishaw man cp
<21> sladen how do I delete the workgroup?
<21> using smb4k? or?
<26> in what part of the live cd can I find gpart?
<19> ...i wasn't asking you, but thanks!
<1> Dyegov[Away], the only thing I can suggest is using windows to create a drive you don't need, like E: . You can give that partition, and a bit of it for swap, to ubuntu.
<25> anyone know of a good frontend/GUI for tar/mt for tape drives?
<4> yeah that happens in irc. people you are not directly addressing sometimes answer
<4> fileroller ?
<26> as I sad before, I'm a noob in anything, so I don't even know how to make a drive nickrud
