<7> nicrud https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DapperUpgrades
<6> nickrud: did you know about the {,,} syntax in bash?

<8> Any suggestions please?
<9> im getting this strange message when i install/remove packages
<10> simian__, yes
<15> eyequeue: it worked. thanks for helping!
<16> cwolfie: the live CD doesn't include the DVD decoding lib
<17> I'm trying to set up VNC but it isn't working. The command "vncserver" says not found and if I try to install the package it tells me that "vnvserver" is not a package. What am I doing wrong?
<5> eyequeue: thanks
<16> funkja: it's xvnc iirc
<0> esher: gksudo "gedit /etc/apt/sources.list" and change all breezy to dapper than save and close it than run sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
<8> tga: is there a way I can get it going without installing anything on my HDD ?
<10> simian__, i use 1122 for box .11, 1222 for box .12 on the lan, etc, if that helps
<8> I read about GeexBox
<18> funkja: /usr/lib/vino/vino-server
<4> NoWhereToTurn, yeah, it's longer, not exactly clear. But it boils down to making sure your breezy is up to date, then running the update-manager
<8> im downloading it
<10> Ayabara, congrats
<8> apart from that anything that you can suggest will be of great help.
<18> funkja: and don't ask me why it isn't in the $PATH - I have no idea ;)
<5> eyequeue: i see, thanks
<7> well since I dont have breezy installed I have to jump through more hoops
<16> cwolfie: I'm not sure if you can install packages on the livecd
<19> crimsun_, hmm nothing shows
<17> :)
<11> boha_: lsmod |grep ^snd_pcm_oss
<20> dooglus: is there a way to make a html file with some html in it every hour?
<19> crimsun_, snd_pcm_oss 53664 0
<4> NoWhereToTurn, true. Thats why I suggest a new install. Faster, smaller download, etc.
<9> can anyone help me please?
<9> im getting this strange message when i install/remove packages
<11> boha_: ls -l /dev/dsp*
<21> Rainier, and what does the msg say?
<20> oh , he went
<14> thanx gnomefreak
<14> now it workls
<22> crimsun_: Now this is interesting. When I started up again, I was looking at what was opening sound files in a tty. It looks like esd launched and stayed running, however, the full desktop was taking *forever* to come up. Killing off esd allowed the desktop to finish loading very quickly.
<4> NoWhereToTurn, apt kinda ***umes people are generally close to up to date
<9> hello gilligan_ thanks, it says: ** (process:14922): CRITICAL **: egg_desktop_entries_add_group: ***ertion `egg_desktop_entries_lookup_group (entries, group_name) == NULL' failed
<7> nickrud ok then what ISO do I use? The desktop version which supposedly is buggy or the alternate isntall version?
<19> crimsun_, crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 3 2006-06-10 13:50 /dev/dsp
<23> anyone know how to enable dual monitors in X?
<16> can anyone help with getting an Orinoco card to work in Dapper?
<22> crimsun_: By "sound files" I mean the devices in /dev/snd
<20> is it possible to make a html file with some predifined html in it through terminal
<4> NoWhereToTurn, alternate
<9> gilligan_: packages are installed and removed anyway but this appears many times with different process numbers
<24> Does anyone know the default backend? is it xine or gstreamer?
<22> crimsun_: I'm beginning to suspect that the Tecra 8000 simply has sound hardware that's not going to work, period. ;-)
<11> gdb: uncheck System> Preferences> Sound> Enable software sound mixing
<7> ok thank goodness for that.. been running around in circles for the last day
<25> byz
<4> NoWhereToTurn, or, that's the general consensus on this channel. gnomefreak spends more time here, and recommends it a lot
<22> crimsun_: k
<9> gilligan_: it started after i installed xfce. i removed it but it still appears
<11> gdb: at that point, does aplay work?

<26> what is hte channel for the xgl?
<26> #ubuntu-xgl?
<11> xonic: yes
<21> Rainier, hm.. dunno about that. Try too google for the error message.. but i'd ignore that for now
<20> dooglus??
<4> channel for xgl should be /dev/null
<27> ?
<9> gilligan_: ok thanx anyway
<11> boha_: does ``cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp'' do anything?
<28> how do i find the location of a file if i know only the filename?
<11> boha_: you'll need to interrupt it with ctrl+c, of course
<22> crimsun_: aplay reports that it is "Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/startup.wav' etc etc, and then spits out this error: aplay: pcm_write:1222: write error: Input/output error
<8> cant i mount the DVD drive from a ubuntu live cd ?
<11> gdb: aha.
<22> crimsun_: So I'm suspecting that this is simply not going to work. I trust that the system is now in a state where sound *should* be working.
<11> gdb: Is PnP enabled in the bios?
<11> gdb: if so, disable it.
<22> crimsun_: That I don't know. I will have to leave channel to reboot the machine. I will do that now.
<22> crimsun_: Thank you for your dilligence in ***isting me with this.
<29> is there a way to recover data from messed up partitions that anyone knows about?
<20> anyone? can i make a html file with some html in it through terminal without me opening nano myself and putting in the html?
<22> crimsun_: I'm not one that normally has to ask for help, so this is somewhat frustrating. ;-)
<30> hi! I have a laptop with an nvidia fx5700go in it. I've installed nvidia drivers, tried using automatix and using manual install methods. Both result in a freeze on the nvidia logo..
<31> Hello, when I run "sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart" then it complains about a (fatally) missing file namely "/etc/postfix/main.cf". In the directory there are three files with names called main.cf.dist , main.cf.debian and main.cf.tls . What can I do? The computer frequently crashes while deconfiguring interfaces and I think this is the reason.
<19> crimsun_, i hear some noise
<8> join #ubunduhelp
<32> u mean ubunTuhelp
<8> oops
<8> ya
<8> none there
<8> man i need some help :)
<17> 924006
<11> boha_: ok, have you modified /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss ?
<8> when i boot using the live cd cant i download and copy something to my HDD ?
<8> when i open the HDD it is getting mouted as read only
<19> crimsun_, no
<8> cant I change it ?
<33> hj, has here anyone a suggestion if and how I can install a Kernel from a Live-CD into a existing Ubuntu-System?
<34> cwolfie: ntfs partitions mount only as read only
<0> cwolfie: ntfs?
<35> cwolfie: are you trying to write to an Windows NTFS partition?
<8> ya
<36> anyone know how to use an sta adc/dac sound device with ubuntu?
<0> cwolfie: you really dont wanna do that
<35> cwolfie: the reason is that the little write support that is in linux for NTFS is consider unsafe and can break things.
<8> hmmm
<37> hey, is there a metapackage for ubuntu-server, because i can't find it?
<8> lemme try shoving my usb drive
<4> noobuntu, that's a strange one: but you could mount the livecd and look for the kernel on the livecd. But, I don't have an opinion on doing that, other than being sure you have a good fallback :)
<37> just to install the server packages?
<0> libdmb: no
<8> or i will have to boot back to Xp to downlaod GeexboX
<35> cwolfie: if you have a fat32 (vfat) partition it will work fine but not with large files over 4gb i belive.
<0> libdmb: depends what you want
<33> nickrud: thanks i tried allready that, but found no *.deb-packages on it
<38> hello
<16> orinoco+wep+dapper = bleh
<37> gnomefreak: ok, just wondering, because i saw edubuntu-server
<39> where can i post a suggestion, i.e. where's the official ubuntu wish list?
<16> AngryElf: everything you store in /dev/null will be sent to the Ubuntu dev team
<8> and i cant mount DVD drive
<39> ?? will they really read it?
<8> can i format a partition to fat32 using ubuntu live cd ?
<34> lol
<38> question.. even tho i've got a range of v&h refresh rates for my monitor in xorg.conf.. the screen resolution dialoge in gnome only displays one refresh rate
<39> :( funny
<11> boha_: try: echo "et.x86 0 0 direct" |sudo tee /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss && echo "et.x86 0 0 disable" |sudo tee /proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/oss
<36> anyone know how to use an sta adc/dac sound device with ubuntu?
<0> just to make sure i checked there is no ubuntu server but im thinking why not install lamp and whatever else you like to go along with it
<11> djspiewak: more precise, please?
<36> um, it's an external multi-channel sound device
<5> eyequeue: i have set up my router to allow all inbound traffic to port 22 but when i try to connect it says connection refused
<36> I'll get a model number
