<0> pm: How?
<1> I get this error when trying to install x11-common:
<1> dpkg: error processing .../x11-common-6.9.0... (--unpack); trying to overwrite '/etc/X11/rgb/txt' which is also in package xrgb; dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (broken pipe): e: subprocess dpkg returned error code 1
<1> how might I fix this?
<2> apt-get install kde instead of apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
<3> naetrick, post the output of 'cat /etc/apt/sources.list' in paste.ubuntu-nl.org
<4> naetrick: so what is this in their database, "playability" is 4 out of 5?
<5> hi! :-)
<1> ompaul: I can't... I'm not even in X
<6> pm: Who are you suggesting that towards?
<7> respects ompaul
<1> I do have a testing link in there, though
<0> pm: What do I have to download in order to do that command?
<5> anyone can tell me a good kernel?
<8> wes, dulouz, i have two cpu's. it's only displaying one of them. (is that because i'm running ubuntu32?)
<9> hi, what is the easiest way to do filesharing over a small LAN whith one machine running xp and one ubuntu?

<1> for testing packages, because the stable packages default ftp page has old versions of FF, and many other apps
<3> naetrick, sorry you have a ?? testing link - as in you are mixing stuff from dapper and breezy?
<10> heh **** Cheney shot someone... lol
<11> jan_: install a ftp server
<12> samba
<1> This all happened when I added the testing link and updated a ton of packages, though
<13> Stork: Sorry, no idea. I've never touched a 2 cpu system.
<14> Stork: you need an smp kernel
<12> Stork: uname -r
<1> ompaul: a link for testing packages, so I can (hopefully) get the latest released versions
<12> what wes said
<3> naetrick, do this uname -a
<15> anyone think that suse is better than ubuntu
<16> pm: thats not really good adice
<9> IdleOne, ok.. but when just one just want to send files now and then, is ftp necessary?
<17> jan_: samba typically
<1> 2.6.12-9-386
<3> naetrick, devel and testing are not for playing with
<3> !dapper
<18> The 6.04 version of Ubuntu will be the "Dapper Drake" release, due april 20, 2006. If you want to use it before then, be warned that it's not yet stable and may break. You get to keep/repair the pieces.
<16> AntMaz: suse is slower and older than ubuntu
<11> jan_: easiest way
<6> AntMaz: Like !kde said, you can do 'sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop'. If you want to free up disk space, you can then remove Gnome, but if that's not an issue you can just leave it and not use it. To use KDE, on your login screen, click Sessions, and choose KDE, then when you log in, just answer "Set as Default" in the box that pops up, and you're all set.
<3> naetrick, read that last part of the bots expression
<15> ah
<9> IdleOne, ok, thanks u all... :)
<1> ompaul: Then how do I configure apt so I can get the latest versions of applications?
<3> naetrick, do you understand the difference between release and development?
<3> naetrick, devel breaks and is designed to break lots from now until april 20th
<0> tony: What do I have to download for that prompt to work?
<16> naetrick: with your kernel you might try to get the 2.6.12.10 kernel to begin with
<9> Xenguy, both machines must install samba?
<19> I keep getting these errors all the time: Error: "/var/tmp/kdecache-ghb" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0.
<19> Link points to "/var/tmp/kdecache-root"
<16> naetrick: and i have a strange feeling dapper is gonna be broken soon and for a while
<6> darthbutcher: apt-get you mean? Nothing, that's what does the download.
<0> tony: My terminal is crazy.
<15> sudo do i do that in shell dont mean to sound like a total noob
<1> Well, how might I fix my problem?
<0> tony: It won't let me type in my p***word!
<16> naetrick: what is your problem?
<20> is anyone familiar with the time command ?
<1> dpkg: error processing .../x11-common-6.9.0... (--unpack); trying to overwrite '/etc/X11/rgb/txt' which is also in package xrgb; dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (broken pipe): e: subprocess dpkg returned error code 1
<1> I get that error when trying to install x11-common
<21> AntMaz: you n00b ;)
<17> jan_: I don't know the specifics. Others here might, or find a HOWTO for Ubuntu Samba
<6> darthbutcher: It won't show it as you type it in. Try just typing anyway and hit enter, and get back to me.
<15> haha
<0> k
<17> !tell jan_ about samba
<22> Ompaul: Gather your bearings? oO :P
<3> naetrick, do you understand the difference between release and development?
<0> tony: E: Couldn't find package kubuntu-deskto
<1> ompaul: Of course I do
<6> AntMaz: Applications > Accessories > Terminal if you haven't found it already, and yes.
<13> oh, coffee is so good. Mmm.
<15> ok sorry dude
<16> darthbutcher: sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
<0> tony: And if I just want KDE, and not Kubuntu, do I need to download Kubuntu or KDE?
<6> darthbutcher: kubuntu-desktop, with a P on the end.
<17> AntMaz: also /msg ubotu terminal

<6> darthbutcher: Either kde or kdebase, looks like when I did it I did kdebase.
<0> Ok, then instead of kubuntu-desktop, kdebase?
<13> why can't one just install the KDE system from Synaptic? then set your .xinitrc to start kde?
<6> darthbutcher: Right.
<0> dulouz: Because I'm a n00b.
<17> dulouz: I don't thinks that works
<16> darthbutcher: sudo apt-get install kde but warning you will be there for days installing things
<13> darth: i wasn't implying that :) i was sort of asking the people who are helping
<16> installing kde will install kde-base with it
<1> So, I just removed the "testing" link in my sources.list, ran "apt-get update", tried "apt-get install x11-common", but now it says no installation candidate
<23> why .xinitrc when there is gdm
<0> gnomefreak: So, Kubuntu would be easier?
<24> hi! i've got a question (sorry for my english i'm french) is there in the roadmap the goal to integrate swsusp2 in the kernel or the module in a separate package ?
<16> darthbutcher: yes
<16> much
<0> Ok.
<3> naetrick, what has happened is that you have put in files that will break - it looks as if some of them have done so already. I have nowhere other than rebuild - either commit to dapper and if it dies put up with it step back to breezy and move forward I will get the bot to send you a message on doing the full step forward, however mixing wildly is not a good idea
<13> bleh, gdm. but yeah, same effect i guess
<20> can someone help me eoth the command line tool "time" ?
<0> gnomefreak: Would it completely uninstall Ubuntu? And do I need to burn a CD?
<6> gnomefreak: "you will be there for days installing things" - How so?
<17> RustyJames: what are you trying to do?
<16> darthbutcher: installing kubuntu will not uninstall anything
<15> E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)
<15> E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?
<16> tonyyarusso: kde comes stripped
<16> AntMaz: close synaptic
<0> gnomefreak: Thanks.
<16> darthbutcher: yw
<25> hi can some one help me with steam?
<20> Xenguy, i want to measure the CPU and memory use of a program i wrote
<1> hmm, I think I may have it
<16> tonyyarusso: also if you dont know the name of packages it can be a while :)
<1> "crosses fingers"
<23> top is a good start
<6> gnomefreak: True. I mainly use Gnome, but just wanted to add KDE, not KDE+crapload of apps that come with it.
<1> ompaul: so, I guess to get the newest versions of apps I shouldn't use apt-get
<26> Hey, I am trying to get rhapsody to run under wine, i keep getting this message fixme:actctx:CreateActCtxW stub!
<26> and I am getting no help in the wine chatroom
<22> Topyli Think you could help me troubleshoot this time demo install? oO
<17> RustyJames: hrm, so where does 'time' fit in?
<27> hello
<28> Hey, need help installing PHP Eclipse. I have Eclipse installed allready. Where is the directory, sou I can put the PHPEclipse files in????
<15> synaptic?
<0> I am installing Kubuntu-Desktop now.
<0> I need it to run KDE programs like KMail, right?
<3> naetrick, it grabs whatever is new - you can't mix release and devel and expect it all to be happy
<16> tonyyarusso: for me or you thats fine but when people new to ubuntu come in i go with meta package so they dont have to think too hard
<13> Rusty: valgrind is a great memory and time profiler if you've written your app in C or C++
<26> and I am getting no help in the wine chatroom
<29> hi...i don't seem to be able to mount an ext3 partition...whats wrong?
<3> naetrick, you can't step back easy
<0> __mikem: Hey!
<26> Hey, I am trying to get rhapsody to run under wine, i keep getting this message fixme:actctx:CreateActCtxW stub!
<1> ompaul: I guess that's why it installed FF 1.0.7...
<15> oh i changed my background i have to restart now
<6> gnomefreak: Good point.
<26> hey
<16> AntMaz: are you running apt-get in another terminal right now?
<15> windows had an error in kernel32.dll
<26> trying to get help on something
<0> __mikem: I am doing well with Linux now.
<20> Xenguy, its a command line tool that does show you the cpu usage of a process and it can be used to show memory usage but im not getting it to work properly
<26> good
<4> phelan: sorry, messaging with dad. haven't yet tried myself to install it
<21> naetrick: in debian you can mix stable and testing with experimental.. but I usually run into problems if I try to install programs with lots of dependencies.. personally I would just stick with the stable version of ubuntu and wait for the new packages every six months
<6> AntMaz: Windows borked just because you changed a background?
<15> was trying yea let me guess it wont work when i have irc up ?
<22> topyli No prob.
<17> RustyJames: OK, can't help you with that (see the note above about valgrind too)
<15> no im being a smart 455 thats how windows is
<3> phelan, so it tells you it is not there when you are in the same directory, are you trying to type out the whole name?
<26> Hey, I am trying to get rhapsody to run under wine, i keep getting this message fixme:actctx:CreateActCtxW stub!
<22> Ompaul Yes, and yes.
