<0> K-Rich: did you check bug reports?
<1> hello, anyone know how to change the settings on the built in vnc server? i'm trying to open a port on my router to allow me to connect remotely... thanks...
<2> BlueSwirl: that's my next option if i can't get it working.... only issue is she needs a calander
<3> skpl: /usr/share/icons
<4> ah
<1> i would prefer to have this running on port 5900
<2> CosmoDad: yeah, didn't see anything
<5> hmm, that is awkward, sunbird isn't really up to scratch at the mo.
<2> BlueSwirl: and i don't think it's in the repos either
<4> k-rich, you are using breezy i presume?
<6> can someone tell me why i might have an icon theme installed but it not be in the theme directories?
<7> hello!
<2> jadacyrus: Yeah
<5> i installed thunderbird on my ubuntu machine, just using 'add applications'
<8> hi
<8> i'm a linux noob

<9> I have added a new group called "subversion". I added my user to the group. When I type "groups user" it tells me that the user was added to the group, but when I type "groups" as user, it doesn't show up. Can anyone tell me what's going on?
<8> how do we searcch for a file on ubuntu?
<2> fraxtal: did you log out and in again
<10> Rews: use locate or find in the terminal
<0> K-Rich: I'd download from source, compile and try that
<2> Rews: Places > Search for file
<3> skpl: if you installed a deb package, you could always check to see where the files were put
<11> Rews: there's also a good GNOME search thing
<0> K-Rich: or run strace on evolution
<2> Rews: or from terminal 'locate file'
<9> hmm let me try
<11> Rews: yep, what that guy said
<8> ok, i am on the root directory, i type find sources.list
<12> Rews, in many different ways, there is a terminal based command called locate there is also a command called find, and there is a program called beagal
<8> No such file or directory
<2> CosmoDad: will do that when i get there... i'm 22 miles away trying to help lol
<0> K-Rich: use ssh ;)
<13> Rews, try locate sources.list
<11> is there any reason to use find instead of locate?
<12> Rews, woops beagal not that but beagle actually
<8> ok it worked ;)
<8> thx
<10> Rews: find / -name 'sources.list' but locate is way faster
<8> oh ok i see
<7> can you use wildcards in those searches?
<11> yeah, find's kind of too slow to be of any use
<8> i knew i was missing something
<14> can somebody help me get my microphone working? I turned up the volume and unmuted capture, but it still isn't making a sound. The same mic has worked on ubuntu before.
<0> asdf25: find is independent of a database but slower
<10> Rews: the locate database is only updated once a day though
<8> ok
<0> asdf25: waaaaay slower
<15> is there a channel for dapper support ?
<8> locate updatedb ?
<12> Rews, if you just created the file then you need to update the database
<9> K-Rich, ok that worked. Is there no other way to do it though?
<2> CosmoDad: good idea
<10> Rews: so things you just installed wont be found by locate
<5> can you manually update the database for locate?
<8> locate updatedb ?
<11> locate -u i think?
<5> shiny
<12> lamego, ubuntu+1
<12> Rews, sudo updatedb << to update the db
<16> ok tx for your help mandingo and evryone else
<6> bheung, how do i do that?
<7> anyone using vsftp? if so is it any better than proftpd?
<2> fraxtal: not that i know of
<9> ok thanks
<2> CosmoDad: how can i save the strace evolution results to a file ?
<10> MystaMax: proftpd is a tough competitor
<10> MystaMax: don't really know vsftp though
<17> is there some kind of an "extras" disc that has codecs, ff, and other stuff from it ? kind of like all the stuff automatix installs, available on a cdrom
<7> i wanted to use proftp b/c I found a administration GUI that i could install to manage it
<17> for breezy ofcourse
<2> CosmoDad: mn i got it
<10> MystaMax: proftpd is of industrial strength
<6> MystaMax, what is it called?
<3> skpl: the easiest way I know, is to open up Synaptic (System -> Administration -> Synaptic) and then find that package... right click and look at the properties
<12> !automatix
<18> methinks automatix is unsafe, it overwrites configuration files, and does things like "echo -e 'y\nY\n'" that are considered risky. Please do not use it. There are alternative applications, but it's often best to read the documentation.

<12> rohan ^^^^
<3> skpl: there might be a command line way too..
<7> hold on let me double check th name
<19> hi
<19> im an indian from malaysia
<6> bheung, actually, even though the icon theme was called debian icons i do not think it was a deb package.
<17> ompaul: yes, i know automatix breaks boxes. i want to have all the _packages_ it installs from ubuntus own repo, on a iso
<17> so that on all pcs i put kubuntu / ubuntu disc and the extras disc
<17> install stuff
<17> be done
<20> when I try to run gdmsetup i get the following error: Could not access GDM configuration file.
<3> skpl: how did you install it?/
<13> i've installed automatix and it workes great on 2 different machines
<20> when i do locate gdm.conf it returns nothing
<12> rohan, read the web page wiki.ubuntu.com/restricted and then also /msg ubotu KeyWord and you will get lots of other info
<6> bheung, from a tarball
<3> oh
<21> bonsoir
<17> ompaul: i *know* all that, i have been a kubuntu user for a long time ! i am looking for a pre build iso
<19> hi
<12> rohan, then I would use the web pages to find the stuff you want and then script up some config stuff and then lastly save off the .debs and stuff to one site :-)
<22> anyone know where i can find a delicious extension/plugin for epiphany-browser?
<12> rohan, and no I don't know whats in that piece of box breaking
<17> ompaul: hehe yes, i want someone that has done that already
<7> skpl: here is the link to the proftp GUI admin
<7> http://proftpd-adm.sourceforge.net
<12> rohan, have a look at #easyubuntu might be easy on your brain
<23> Did rorry go away?
<12> !fr
<18> Allez a #ubuntu-fr ou #kubuntu-fr pour de l'aide et de la discussion en francais.
<12> pierre__, ^^^^
<8> how do we update ubuntu plz?
<24> anyone know how to downgrade? i just noticed a whole bunch of errors while upgrading to dapper
<8> i thought it was apt-get install update
<12> Rews, so it is
<23> Old Windows habits worked out. A reboot made my X work. Go figure. :S
<8> it did not tell me that there wher new packets
<12> Rews, then sudo apt-get upgrade (and use sudo with the other one)
<10> MystaMax: did you check out gproftpd as well?
<8> upgrade...that's it
<8> thx ;)
<7> mwe: not yet is it in the repositories?
<10> MystaMax: yeah
<25> How do I use 855resolution
<10> MystaMax: in universe
<7> k thanks, i'm looking it up now
<6> where is a good place to store programs that i install?
<6> im new to linux, i dunno
<13> mwe, is it a webbased proftpd admin tool?
<7> kensenme: no its not
<13> MystaMax, what is it then?
<6> where is a good place to store programs that i install?
<7> a gnome frontend
<10> Knorrie: gproftpd? it's gtk+
<13> MystaMax, ah, k
<26> aint there Eterm for download? oO
<13> MystaMax, have u tried proftpd-adm?
<7> nope
<7> whats that?
<7> whats the adm?
<14> can somebody help me get my microphone working? I turned up the volume and unmuted capture, but it still isn't making a sound. The same mic has worked on ubuntu before.
<13> MystaMax, you just provided the url
<27> Ok guys. A friend has a dual boot laptop (Win/Linux) and he wants to make the linux partition bigger. Using QTparted we shrunk the Windows partition... but it won't let us "grow" the ext3 filesystem. Any ideas?
<10> skpl: most programs will install to some default place in /usr/local or something. keep your personal stuff in ~/bin maybe
<7> oh oh
<7> Kensentme: oh you mean the admin tool
<13> yeah
<6> mwe: no ~/bin does not sound good to me
<6> something else?
<7> not yet, its looking like that'll be my primary choice though
<15> ChangerOfSea, you can't shrink a partition if it is mounted
<12> skpl, well if you do it the easy way you will just install packages
<10> skpl: why not it's standard
<15> i mean Chocobo you can't shrink a partition if it is mounted
