<0> how do I get out of gnome without killing it violently with ctrl+alt+backspace?
<1> carthik: It should save all of those things during the regeneration. Mine's been smart about that anyway.
<2> thanks _jason, ubotu
<3> the solution to that would be to buy a real computer and not an overpriced piece of eye candy
<4> !netsplit
<5> well, netsplit is when two IRC servers of the same network (like Freenode) disconnect from each other, so users on one server stop seeing users on the other. If this is happening now, just relax and enjoy the show.
<6> _jason: i already have this, it's what i was trying to compile :\
<7> I'm getting a blank screen after the install completes and reboots. i'm sure it's an X11 config problem but i can't switch to a term. any ideas?
<8> ok thanks
<4> blindx: download the .deb
<9> helpful
<0> or is ctrl alt backspace the normal way to leave gnome?
<10> tonyyarusso, will try, and you wouldn't know how knoppix does the colorful consoles would you ? :)
<11> yipe: that restarts X
<9> does anyone know how to boot to a rescue/safe prompt on PPC?
<3> wolfsong13, do a check on your cd, it's probably damaged

<1> carthik: Not a clue.
<0> okay, I wanna end gnome and X, non-violently
<12> Ya bun 2
<6> _jason: i don't see one? is it with the other download link?
<13> how do i force quit an application that isn't responding?
<4> blindx: click on the architecture link (I admit it is elusive)
<7> whyvas: i didn't have a problem doing the actual install
<1> yipe: It's not violent - that's a perfectly proper way of going about it. You can also do 'sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop'
<3> still, check it to make sure
<7> everything went find
<14> i got a general question what are some cool things you can do in ubunbut
<7> how?
<0> oh okay
<2> What linux guides should I read before using Ubuntu? first-time-user...
<7> and i can do a server install with the same disc
<0> I'm used to windows where ctrl alt delete is the rough way to restart it
<3> when you boot off the cd, there's an option in that menu
<4> bobo: help.ubuntu.com
<6> I DIDN'T KNOW THAT WAS A LINK!
<1> bosco: Set up your own web server, make workspace switching have 3D graphical animations, chat with friends, ...
<6> I wouldn't have to install this if I knew that was a link!
<15> Xaviers, sory mate. i can't help you with your problem. i've had breezy unable to boot on a laptop
<4> blindx: yes, yes I hear you
<16> Do you have to pay local sales tax for the state in which you purchase your hosting ?
<3> you can with the dapper disc, don't know about the breezy one
<6> bah, i hate this :@
<9> is there no universal linux safemode type of thing?
<14> tonyyarusso, i am borred that is why i asked
<17> Hey guys i got a problem i just installed Nvidia drivers following the ubuntuguide.org way with apt-get "nvidia-glx and nvidia-settings" then i enabled the nvidia-glxc-config but when i came back from restarting gnome, i got an Xserver error message and had to rebuild the config does that mean drivers need ot be reinstalled?
<4> blindx: just make sure that you have all of the dependencies too
<15> both live cd and install cd crap out saying there not cdrom drive!
<1> bosco: I've done the same :)
<18> blindx: don't yell
<9> like the command-s single user mode in OS X?
<6> I'd have been online five hours ago if i knew that was a link :\
<13> how do i force quit an application that isn't responding?
<1> bosco: 3ddesk is pretty sweet if your hardware can handle it.
<19> freakabcd, that okay
<15> and how exactly did it start the installer/live cd startup? from ether?
<15> heh..
<15> i got really pissed off that time
<0> aeudian: I've heard that the default nv drivers sometimes work better than the nvidia onces
<0> I might be wrong
<14> tonyyarusso, i run e17 and it doesnt supprot it
<2> _jason, will that website be good for any distroes of linux?
<1> bosco: Dang.
<17> yipe: does that mean i have to remove these drivers some how or am i okay?
<15> bosco, you run e17 and it doesn;t support what?
<18> Double_D: xkill is one option
<3> tonyyarusso, xgl+compiz is much sweeter
<13> xenguy xkill <application>?
<3> really cool stuff
<4> bobo: no, that's more for ubuntu. Do you want a ``I really want to understand linux'' kind of guide?
<0> someone else will have to tell you that>.<
<12> Just try to boot/install Ubuntu on any pc or hard drive you can get your hands on. It's fun and easy
<14> tonyyarusso, but i have messed with it in e16 i love 3ddesk
<3> you need dapper though
<1> whyvas: I'll be taking a look at that later too!
<7> whyvas: i'm in the options menu but don't' see anything to test the disc
<15> whyvas, no. aiglx+compiz is even sweeter .. works on a damn crappy i810 !!

<20> trying to install mysql-server-4.1 and php4-gd2 but having major problems. i have the latest updates, and this is a new install of ubuntu. i also don't know wtf i'm doing either. a good url would help
<17> !nvidia
<5> it has been said that nvidia is at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia or http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=57368
<18> Double_D: type xkill in a terminal, then click on the offending app window
<3> i have a i915
<6> _jason: now what do i do with this deb file?
<2> _jason, : yeah
<4> !deb
<5> To install a .deb file: sudo dpkg -i filename.deb (but note that the program you want might be installable using !apt from the !repos)
<13> Xenguy: sweet, thank you very much!
<3> same driver i think, crappy as **** too
<15> whyvas, and you're using xgl?
<4> blindx: remember: you _need_ the dependencies
<18> Double_D: a handy tool :-)
<3> i tried it
<21> Howdy guys... uhh... dont shoot me - came here looking for some wireless lan help. Been trying for two days to get my wireless lan card to work under ubuntu. Belkin card, 10ec:8085 - realtek chipset. =( Anyone have luck with this card before? (compusa branded crap they basically gave away black friday)
<13> Xenguy: i agree. i'll definitely remember it.
<4> bobo: ok well everything at tldp.org is good and the links I am about to send you too
<22> Hi all
<4> ubotu: tell bobo about rute
<4> ubotu: tell bobo about cli
<3> got rid of it because scrolling webpages was slow
<15> whyvas, dude.. seriously, try the aiglx+compiz route. its much smoother, video playback is fast, glxgears and other gl stuff shows up, etc.
<2> thanks _jason :)
<3> wolfsong13, you booted off the CD?
<14> freakabcd, e17 doesnt support 3ddesk
<9> anyone know how to boot into gnome-less safemode on PPC?
<23> anyone get pokerstars to work under ubuntu? think xwine would emu it?
<7> whyvas: yes
<3> cool
<15> whyvas, because you used xgl on that i925
<15> try the aiglx.
<3> i'll try that
<12> The real player for linux is not real at all, ka ka
<15> its faaaaaast man compared to xgl+compix
<22> ev'ry one, is HT similar MultiProcessor
<15> and faast equats to smooth display for you when you play with the plugins
<24> mechatronic: HT is marketing BS
<24> HT is nothing like a multi-processor
<3> yeah
<15> yes, HT is marketing BS.
<3> they weren't too bad
<15> although in certain ciscumstances it can make things faster
<3> a little flickery
<15> see..
<25> most of the time HT makes things slower
<21> I am trying to get the driver working in ndiswrapper, via the windows wireless network thing. It shows up there, but when I click configure network it fails.
<22> Rug: so if I config kernel, should I choose single processor?
<21> well, not fails - but it doesnt shwo up
<15> you've got 915 with flicker. i've got 855gm and never seen a flicker yet!
<25> how do you get aiglx goin freakabcd ?
<15> you must try it
<15> bur[n]er, what card do you have?
<25> freakabcd: nvidia-legacy
<25> freakabcd: Geforce2 to be exact
<15> ok. nvidia legacy, meaning which card. you'll have to stick to xgl for now. can;t get aiglx yet for you
<15> man, i have a geforce2 on my desktop. and people kept saying crap like you need a new(er) graphic card, etc.
<3> geforce2?? ouch man
<25> i just upgraded to this ;) i had a radeon 7000 before
<15> works xgl+compiz works great on my desktop. its fricking amazing, 1600x1200
<3> i have a tandy that has about the same gfx power as a geforce 2
<7> so can someone tell me how to check my disc?
<15> whyvas, no you don;t
<15> don;t think geforce2 is crap
<25> wolfsong13: fsck?
<9> anyone know how to boot into single user mode on mac?
<0> so, I tried going into terminal mode, then trying that ctrl alt f1-f12 thing
<0> and nothing happened
<7> my install disc
<25> freakabcd: you're using xgl on a geforce2?
<15> ofcourse dudeQ
<15> didn;t i just say so?
