<1> rumour has it, restricted is https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RestrictedFormats Most of the formats listed there can be replaced by !FreeFormats
<2> !tell ubuntu about restricted
<3> eobanb_: thanks, didn't know about that channel
<4> mediated: bastille is quite good also.. why don't you give it a shot?
<5> i tried totern movie player, it doesnt work
<6> how do i install lircd on ubuntu
<6> ?
<7> eobanb: I find the package in Synaptic and then mark it for installation and then it gives me messages saying that it depends on a certain package and version, but it will install the same package but with an older version than what is required.
<2> ubuntu, please read the link ubotu sent you
<2> !info lircd
<8> ubuntu, that restricted page explains much
<2> daveCB, slowly and painfully?
<6> na
<2> :)
<6> fast and dirty

<9> where are the default breezy wallpapers stored?
<10> if i kill BitTorrent and then restart, will it take off where it left off with the partially downloaded file?
<11> metatag: thanks for the link. I'm going to read up on some of the details. I appreciate the help everyone.
<12> skon: sort of. For all intents and purposes, yes.
<2> oh, it's called lirc
<2> daveCB, just sudo apt-get install lirc
<6> ahhhh
<6> tks
<13> is there a way to always have my location bar visible in Nautulus
<2> er, daveCB, enable universe first.
<10> Flannel: so it won't start all over again eg record over the top
<8> ****-richardson_, /usr/share/backgrounds
<6> how?
<2> !tell daveCB about universe
<6> =x
<12> skon: nope. thats how bittorrent works. Actually right nwo youre downloading it in pieces anyway.
<0> skon, yea, it will basically resume where it left off. it will not start all over again from the beginning. that's the whole point of bittorrent, after all.
<9> nickrud: thank you!
<10> Flannel: okay thanks
<14> what time do the markets open?
<4> mediated: no problem
<8> ****-richardson_, um, maybe not. I've got old stuff there
<12> skon: the part that doen't REALLY pick up 'right where' you left off, is that if youre halfway through a piece, then it won't pick up with that piece.
<2> hegaggle, what?
<0> hegaggle, which markets?
<14> im dumb, the stock markets
<0> hegaggle, if you are talking about the us stock market, its 9 am est, afaik.
<9> nickrud: that's where mine are :)
<7> ****-richardson_: Hi, I believe you were the one who helped me last night with making a preferences file. I used your line of Pin: release a=sarge-backports but didn't think to ask if I had to change that line to suit my repository list. My problem is not solved, do you have any suggestions on what I should put instead of sarge-backports.
<2> hegaggle, what does this have to do with ubuntu
<10> oh
<12> eobanb_: he was playing with the stock tickers
<14> my bad i forgot to change channels
<14> sorry
<15> ok, apparently breezy badger has no interest in running on my new pc
<16> does anyone know how to let a proftpd user to delete files and directories ?
<2> pppjjj, if you have a particular question, we can help you
<9> firebird318: you'll need to put teh repository that has the newer version of whatever software you're trying to install
<17> eobanb; im the guy witht he xorg problems
<2> pppjjj == PPJJ?
<17> yeah i have to use my work laptop, so no irc
<17> using a java client
<14> I cant wait for the Upcoming release.
<10> i started BitTorrent remotely with Nxclient. Now i am back home and can't find the dialogue window although it is still running
<0> p***be, well, there is a config file for proftpd somewhere, where you can set the permissions
<12> lampshade: there is a way. I dont know it though (dont use gnome). Poke around. Its in there somewhere.
<7> ****-richardson: How do I find out which repo has the newer version. Synaptic doesn't tell me.
<12> skon: you need screen!
<0> p***be, /etc/proftpd.conf most likely
<10> yeah that is what i used
<16> nanotube_: yas im in that file, except everytime i make DELE set to allow it never works
<12> oh, so... reattach to it.
<17> eobanb; i removed the extra vga card ubuntu was using in xorg.. set everything to my nvidia.. not working. reinstaled ubuntu with only the nvidia
<18> I'm sorry I have to come here and ask stupid questions but I'm so frustrated with how hard it is to install crossover office
<13> Flannel, I'd like to think that, but for the life of me I can't find it. I can get it temporarily with ctrl+L but I checked through prefs and didn't see anything unless I have to edit a conf file to do it?
<10> i did but still no dialog window
<17> same deal.. it shows the login screen a few times, lets me login, soon as i do that it tells me the xorg is not setup correctly and wants me to set it up
<19> made: what's hard about it? I haven't ever tried it.
<8> firebird318, apt-cache policy shows you what repo has what package version
<18> I have the file in my home dir "su install-crossover-standard-demo-5.0.1.sh"

<19> made: sudo, not su
<10> i will kill and restart > thanks though
<2> made, crossover office is a commercial product that comes with tech support, so i'd consult them, not us
<13> pppjjj, when it errors out like that, do you have the chance to see the full output? A lot of time the clue is there. Any option to view the full xorg output?
<19> made: "sudo ./install-crossover-....
<7> nickrud: ok, so then I go by that and then put that repo in the Preferences list.
<17> yeah it lets me view all that ill look again, nothing looked obviously bad
<8> firebird318, pinning?
<13> pppjjj, well what line did it say it had an error on or what was the error
<2> pppjjj, look for lines that say EE
<13> line number won't help me lol when I think of it
<14> on this stock ticker when adding symbols is the ^ required ?
<17> EE..gotcha
<18> command not found
<17> booting now
<2> made, you have to type the whole name of the shell script
<17> it flicks the login screen a few times
<0> p***be, well, i do not run proftpd myself, but if you install the proftpd-doc package, it should install some documentation for proftpd, and then you should look around and it will tell you how to properly enable the stuff you want.
<13> made, make sure to chmod a+x thefile.sh here too so that it is executable
<7> nickrud: what is pinning?
<14> nevermind
<18> <-- newb
<17> so are half of us :)
<13> that's cool I was too 6 months ago and am still noob
<17> well, at least you and i
<8> firebird318, that's the general idea, but pinning by exact version is better (pinning is what a preferences file is for, see man apt_preferences for the gritty details)
<13> I'm in here everyday almost whining.
<18> hehe
<2> made, sudo sh ~/install-crossover-standard-demo-5.0.1.sh
<17> lampshade; well, if it worked perfectly we'd always be noobs
<17> its good that we have to fix it
<7> nickrud: Ok.
<7> I will try that and see if it solves my problem. Thanks everyone.
<20> Hey all
<2> welcome, nseltzer
<18> '$HOME' must exist and belong to you in order for the installation to proceed. You may need to log in as root or use su rather than sudo.
<20> i need someone to help me...
<20> i need like somone to den00b me
<18> I thought I was logged into root
<17> eobanb; in report 1 all i see is a few "no symbols found" and fatal server error : no screens found
<2> made, just do sudo -i, and then sh ./whatever.sh
<13> made, ahh interesting. no, you were using sudo, which is kinda like being root just for that command
<19> nseltzer: with what?
<0> pppjjj, have you tried changing 'Device "nvidia"' to 'Device "vesa"' in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf, to see if that will make the your xorg work?
<8> firebird318, if you search that manpage for 'version 5.8' there's a stanza you can probably adapt pretty easily
<20> drumline_, installing stuff... running apps.... everything
<7> nickrud: Ok, I will check that manpage out. Thank You
<17> this 2nd report is a bunch of memory hoopla
<17> nanotube_; er, no, i guess ill try taht
<13> nseltzer, installing stuff mainly comes from the add package program. Packages are downloaded from repos around the world and installed at your will. this is how you will mainly install programs. (I'm ***uming you are really new and these were things I didn't know when I started)
<0> pppjjj, the "vesa" device is like the failsafe lowest-common-denominator video device. it doesnt have 3d accel or anything, but it has the highest chance of actually working. :)
<17> whats the xserv reconfigu command? sudo reconfigure xserv-xorg ?
<18> no such file or directory
<21> goddamnit, I just died from lack of food in angband 8(
<8> firebird318, I don't like pointing people at man pages, but what you're doing requires it :)
<22> sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg pppjjj
<17> DANKE
<17> oops
<20> lampshade, Ok, I'm still very new, and I am trying to install this driver for a wireless card.
<17> laptops annoy me so much
<20> lampshade, Do i use the package installer for that
<23> hi all. i have a ipw2200 wireless card and i'm trying to connect onto a netgear wgt624 router that's set on "108mbps only" mode... is there any way for me to connect?
<18> I don't get it. I was able to compile my own gentoo kernel and use it completely install anything I want.. I come to ubuntu.. I and I don't know jack squat
<22> pppjjj, trade one for a pentium 90 desktop? ;-P
<17> not that badly
<7> nickrud: I don't mind reading man pages, but there is a lot of them. But if I am directed to the right one I don't mind reading it and learning and solving a problem myself. Thanks for the help. :-)
<0> Anon1782, well, i have the ipw2200 card too - and it only does 54mbps. so if you have your router to 108-only mode, then my guess is that there is no way you can make it work.
<13> Anon1782, ummm don't think so.... I'm pretty sure the ipw2200 can only go to 54,
<17> but the stupid mouse/keyboard leayouts and quick buttons annoy
<19> made: slightly different way of doing it. Ubuntu is one of the 2001 flavors. :)
<18> but but but.. there are things I like about ubuntu that gentoo doesn't offer
<8> made, read !components to start
