<0> jcuk: you cant get a terminal im not sure what to say
<1> gnomefreak : so ive heard, since i cant get debian to detect ethernet i cant install it, fedora core 4 wont load x properly (same thing as ubuntu), only thing that seems to work is knoppix live cd
<0> jcuk: you should still beable to get a tty
<2> cwillu: Synaptic worked on another person's internet connection if that helps
<3> ya, if you can browse you should be fine
<4> ok, i'll try something else. is there any ubuntu howto for installing the 8178 nvidia drivers??? maybe doing that and then doing the nvidia-xconfig will fix my problem
<1> gnomefreak : something to do with my usb keyboard?
<3> but obviously your not
<3> somewhere, apt-get is getting the wrong ip address for that host
<5> Celestianpower, do you have an /etc/apt.conf file?
<6> ddonky, ok
<6> CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -22
<4> cwillu: any chance there's a resource available (like a howto) for installing the 8178 nvidia drivers ???
<7> how to get php-gtk from apt-get?

<8> g3nocide, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia
<2> nickrud: No
<3> Celestianpower: I've got an ugly hack, that'd be interesting to see if it worked
<2> cwillu: Okay
<9> linx - try -t smbfs
<8> linx, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MountWindowsSharesPermanently
<5> Celestianpower, <delete> watches cwillu
<3> replace archive.ubuntu.com with 82.211.81.151
<6> ddonky, i tried that, didnt't work
<2> cwillu: Where?
<3> and security.ubuntu.com with 82.211.81.138
<3> in sources.list
<6> anto9us, thx
<10> where source.list located?
<3> (back it up first)
<3> /etc/apt/sources.list
<10> ic
<5> Celestianpower, save your /etc/apt/sources.list, and put those numbers in
<0> DoTheRodeo: /etc/apt/sources.list
<11> the hosts file!
<11> /etc/host :P
<11> +s
<12> what repos do i need to upgrade to dapper? how can i get the bot to tell me?
<5> cwillu, sorry, I'm kinda excited, never tried that :)
<1> gnomefreak : got a shell now, done it at the graphical login screen
<3> :)
<5> !dapper
<13> The pre-release name for next release of Ubuntu, actual name 6.04. Due 20th April. It is Development Software as such it _May_Break_! > /join #ubuntu+1 < Channel for IRC - Use http://tinyurl.com/rtgxo easy update
<3> might screw with the gpg, I'm not sure
<5> jjs01h, see ubotu just above
<3> but it'd be interesting to see if it gets that far at least
<6> anto9us, thx that manual was needed!
<3> irc: the dns of the future :)
<6> ;)
<12> nickrud: thanks
<8> linx, yes, it's a good one :)
<6> its a bookmark!
<14> What are Dell laptops like with Ubuntu? Generally good or bad?
<15> I did some reading up on apt-zip. It looks except for one thing. It doesn't handle the apt-get update step. It appears you have to "go online" to update your private cache database of apt packages before you can build the script. How do you handle that from a closed network?
<12> rixth: i just bought an inspiron 6000. using it right now. everything is working
<14> jjs01h, thats the exact one I am looking at.
<16> I bet latitudes run fine
<12> rixth: just make sure you get the intel wifi card, etc. nothing proprietary / dell
<2> cwillu: Okay, done
<3> k
<12> rixth: although the bluetooth works too
<3> sudo apt-get update
<15> rixth: I restored an Insprion 7500 (5 years old) with new disk drives and RAM and Ubuntu. Works like a charm.
<8> rixth, I had a successful install of hoary on an inspiron 9100
<1> er one more thing, ubuntu didnt ask me to specify a root p***word on install, is there a default or something?
<14> jcuk, Ubuntu does not have a root p***word
<5> Goldfisch, I'm not sure, but copying /var/lib/apt/lists to a mirror of a production machine?
<14> !tell jcuk about su
<17> !root
<13> By default, the root p***word is locked in Ubuntu. Look at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/RootSudo for all information.
<2> cwillu: Oooh - ugly!
<2> I'll pastebin
<3> sweet
<17> rixth, okay
<3> different is good :)

<15> nickrud: I was hoping it was something like that. I was scanning the APT howto, and it didn't seem to talk to that level.
<2> cwillu: http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/9981
<5> Goldfisch, that's where the lists of available packages are kept after an apt-get update
<4> anto9us: ok, i checked out that link, thng is, i dont have a working xwindows session, so how else can i 'unrestrict' the nvidia drivers without xwindows ???
<3> okay
<18> can anyone point me in the right directions for the ubntu libwrapper stuff ?
<3> 404's are good
<3> probably using vhosts
<2> cwillu: Oh good
<19> how do I update the kernel in ubuntu? tried yesterday and gave a disaster
<5> Goldfisch, but, I'm almost sure, you'll run into 'issues'.
<17> LuisBG, please define update kernel please
<14> Hmm. For $200 more than the Inspiron 6000, you ca go dual core. Does ubuntu play nice with dual core?
<8> g3nocide, download linux drivers from nvidia website
<18> rixth i know it installes onan acer aspire 3610
<2> cwillu: So I do what now?
<20> ".*"
<20> None, Up, Alt_L|Left
<20> None, Down, Alt_L|Right
<5> rixth, I've even heard, that using an smp kernel helps on dual core. That's rumor
<3> Celestianpower: can you paste me /etc/resolv.conf
<20> With this format, how do I signify Enter/Return and Backspace?
<3> and the output of 'set'?
<14> Hmm.
<21> Ok, almost there
<2> cwillu: "nameserver 192.168.1.1" - resolve.conf
<15> nickrud: The only way to this is to test it. My laptop is pretty disposable. I will wipe it, and then install it cleanly with Ubuntu and no network connection. Then I will use my desktop as the Internet machine. Only way to to work this system.
<21> I think I'm getting 1400x1050 but does not fill the screen
<21> any idea why?
<3> that's it?
<2> cwillu: Set? Just type set in the command line?
<22> FWIW, ubuntu runs great on my dual-Athlon system
<3> yes (lower case)
<20> Can anybody read me?
<18> i guess no one wants to play with my idea :p
<18> goes to exhast his google skills
<0> elad`: yes
<9> elad - 5 by 5
<2> cwillu: http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/9982 ,-- set
<23> I am having troubles with sudo, when I run it and enter the p***word, it does not run with root priveleges, what is going on?
<2> *,--
<2> *<--
<5> Goldfisch, I would be interested in how it goes. (Maybe it'll matter to me before I forget the context :)\
<20> Well, can't anybody help me? I'm trying to edit .imwheelrc.
<24> what exactly is a content management system like mambo? is it something like wordpress?
<9> elad - try asking better questions, just based on what you told me i'd say open a text editor
<25> Is there any app for linux that is similar to BeOS Spicykeys?
<3> Celestianpower: brb, just going to do a bit of research
<5> elad`, I can help with the editing, but not with what goes in it (never used imwheel)
<2> cwillu: Okay
<15> nickrud: I can't start this now, because I have be somewhere in half-an-hour. But after that I will start working on it. I can spend this weekend "perfecting it".
<17> vladuz976, it is more than that, your heading in the right direction
<20> ddonky, With this format, how do I signify Enter/Return and Backspace?
<24> ompaul: like what exactly?
<3> Celestianpower: what does 'host archive.ubuntu.com' give you??
<26> excuse me is there a way to remotely install linux onto a machine?
<5> Goldfisch, I nearly always have this channel open, it's amusing. Ping me
<1> gnomefreak : what do i do after running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
<5> Goldfisch, plus, I get all kinds of tips for later
<15> nickrud: This is all to support putting a linux server in production. I have sold management on using mediawiki as a knowledge base tool, and I'm convincing them that it best runs on a linux system (where it was developed). I plan to order an x86 rack server as my platform.
<1> ive went through it but when i start x it still sits with mouse and unable to get a shell
<27> glick: yes ... lots .. first that comes to my mind ... ssh
<20> I got Return nailed down, but what goes in instead of Backspace?
<17> vladuz976, it is a db driven web site, aimed at building training courses
<9> elad - what program are you editing with, nano?
<17> vladuz976, not content management more course management
<26> httpdss, how will you use ssh to install linux on a blank machine?
<28> How come Ubuntu is free of charge? Who pays for the expenses? Everything from Canonical?
<23> I am having troubles with sudo, when I run it and enter the p***word, it does not run with root priveleges, what is going on?
<5> Goldfisch, no offence, but <whoosh> over my head. I'm just a lowly single machine user
<15> nickrud: And then finally (drum roll, please)....ubuntu is my distro of choice.
<20> ddonky, what does it matter?
<2> cwillu: http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/9983
