<0> linuxboyfriend: A lot of people here aren't running production boxes or have slight sanity issues. :)
<1> One of my friends has a Sis-SATA disk (only)... Hoary, and I think Breezy too, couldn't be installed on his comp. Will Dapper be any better?
<2> Ramnath, are you just here to make random snarky comments, or are you here for an actual reason?
<3> linuxboyfriend: You can get dapper-specific talk in #ubuntu+1, btw.
<4> Is there anyway to try and partition the drive outside of the installer, then just skip that step?
<5> PuMpErNiCkLe: i am also not running production boxes :)
<6> !java
<7> To install Java/Sun Java see Java on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RestrictedFormats and also see !javadebs
<6> !javadebs
<8> DoctorX: yeah, you can do it with a live CD using gparted
<9> just a recommendation, don;t run Dapper release on any production or "money-making" machine :)
<0> linuxboyfriend: Then if you have sanity problems, feel free to upgrade. :D
<10> !javadebs
<3> If only my machine made money...
<4> polpak will it handle everything automatically like the installer would?
<9> hehe

<9> mine does...
<1> Ramnath: Wine is for running evil Windows programs, stop trying to use it ;)
<11> doom3
<11> come on
<3> Ramnath: Doesn't that have a native Linux build?
<8> DoctorX: I'm not sure what you mean. It'll repartition your drive.. You'll still need to run the installer to install, but you won't have to set up your partitions.. You just have to tell the installer what to mount where
<0> doom3 is available as a linux binary, isn't it?
<11> no not at all
<9> Doom 3 has a linux version... it's binary, but who really cares about the source here?
<0> yes ---> http://zerowing.idsoftware.com/linux/doom/
<8> Ramnath: you can run it natively
<4> Polpak, I have no idea how im supposed to partition it though
<11> i popped the cd in and nothing
<8> Ramnath: that doesn't mean anything
<11> kill me
<8> Ramnath: ... it's really not that hard
<9> i will...
<8> Ramnath: I'm pretty sure there's even a howto
<9> if you keep whining :)
<2> Ramnath, have you checked google for Doom3-on-Linux info?
<3> Ramnath: I think you have to get the game going first, then people kill you.
<0> tonyyarusso: hehe
<2> tonyyarusso, it's usually demons killing you in Doom, isn't it? ;)
<12> cwillu: Hi!
<3> Madpilot: I wouldn't know; I'm guessing.
<8> DoctorX: I'd recommend 3 partitions. One 10gig partition for /, another partition for swap (twice your ram in size), and then mount the rest on /home
<4> Dont have 10 gigs on the laptop
<9> polpak, good suggestion
<4> only 6 or 7
<8> DoctorX: eh.. Ok, then just make 2
<1> what's wrong with just one partition?
<8> DoctorX: Ideally you'd want /home on a separate partition, but with that little space it hardly matters
<13> Hi all
<11> i wish i had more alcohol
<8> shreevatsa: if /home is not on / it makes it easier to reformat & reinstall w/o losing data
<4> Isnt there something special I have to do to get the laptop to be able to standby/hibernate?
<1> polpak: Oh, I see... I hadn't thought of that
<8> DoctorX: nope, not really
<11> ugh jeez
<13> I have problems with the nvidia driver in dapper, when X starts it said that it can't find it, but I have nvidia-glx installed
<9> DoctorX, in fact, yes... need to install "apmd" >> the thing that enables ACPI-related stuffs
<8> !tell DevGet about nvidia
<11> learn linux or spend $140 on a new windows os?
<9> like hibernate... sleep... but mostly installed/configured by default
<8> Ramnath: it's really not that hard
<9> buy a Windows copy, Ramnath, cheaper
<8> Ramnath: just need to read the howto
<9> read and understand it, then try it out,....
<4> Well I can't use the installers partitioner, if thats whats supposed to set up the apmd thing
<9> GNU/Linux is an advanture
<8> DoctorX: no... it doesn't have anything to do with partitioning
<11> in hell
<8> DoctorX: it'll be installed with the core system
<11> im sorry im just a very snide person
<9> well, if you do not prefer to learn, then, Windows copy would be sufficient
<14> what is the newest kernel?
<13> thx polpak
<14> in breezy?
<11> i learned most of the things
<8> DevGet: =)

<14> 2.6.12 is old?
<15> MeTaM - the latest source is 2.6.15.something
<2> MeTaM, 2.6.12 is still current for breezy - Dapper will have a new kernel when it releases
<11> i just can't get cds to do anything
<14> i remember bad, i have 2.10 kernel?
<14> okay
<8> Ramnath: they're not going to auto-run
<14> thx
<15> MeTaM - if you want to find your current kernel version do uname -r
<8> Ramnath: you have to open them up and select what you want (except possibly for audio cd's)
<11> so do i just drag and drop all of the files to that winecfg program?
<14> 2.6.12-10-386
<14> is the newest breezy kernel?
<14> is this'
<8> Ramnath: ..... what exactly are you trying to do?
<8> MeTaM: yes
<11> make my games work again....
<15> MeTaM - I think so
<11> god
<14> hoh, i upgraded good
<12> cwillu: You aren't here then I take it ;)
<14> thank yours:)
<8> Ramnath: one at a time. Which game are you trying now?
<11> warcraft3
<8> Ramnath: ok
<8> Ramnath: you've installed wine already?
<4> Bleh this laptop is designed so awkwardly
<4> Why would the port for mouse/keyboard be on the left?
<4> Why is the connector for the CD/Floppy (external) on the right?
<11> i suppose every single little file i could possibly download is on there
<2> DoctorX, it's a left-handed laptop
<4> How did I manage to get the only left handed laptop in the world?
<8> Ramnath: actually.. what video card do you have?
<1> midi files don't play... how do I get midi to work?
<11> integrated graphics card
<11> im just waiting for a dvi to vga adaptor
<6> Ramnath, i have one in my drawer :\
<11> warcraft ran on my older, more worthless integrated graphics deal on the mother board
<16> hi guys - have a problem - I try to compile bristuff (isdn), but I can't get it to run.. - it says .../qozap/qozap.o] Error 1 - can't find anything on google concerning that
<11> it cost 5 bucks
<11> and the shipping was 10....
<17> yo is there some way I can set this edubuntu install to run the gateway firewall pppoe for the network with like dhcp and samba
<11> no
<17> i can put in a second ethernet card and use this 8 port switch here
<8> KonphuzeD: yeah, I've done it before. Works fine
<11> every second you waste trying to accomplish this is a complete waste of your life
<8> Ramnath: you need to either give up and go groveling back to you MS masters or **** it up.
<11> hahaha ok
<18> alut tous
<1> Ramnath: Discovering what's happening on your computer is a waste of your life, and playing Doom3 and Warcraft3 isn't?
<8> Ramnath: So far you've mentioned trying to install warcraft3 and doom3 both of which are very well supported under wine or natively respectively
<11> sarcasm
<11> please people
<17> polpak, is there a straight forward tool for setting up sared internet lke firewall/gateway ,dns, dhcp, etc....
<9> For gaming I prefer and have consoles.. wTF you need PC games for?
<19> Ramanth, what are you having trouble with?
<19> Ramnath*
<8> KonphuzeD: you pretty much just need to run the dhcp daemon, and configure your iptables accordingly
<17> i got this listtle computer lab of 6 boxes and one gateway server
<11> just getting the gist of how things run
<8> KonphuzeD: I'd suggest a google search for "Linux Gateway HOWTO"
<17> mmmmmm
<17> and just do that on edubuntu
<11> i have this wine configuration program running
<20> KonphuzeD google "gentoo home router" and it gives instructions on how to use iptables to set up a router
<8> Ramnath: if you've actually installed wine you can probably just double click the setup.exe file on your warcraft 3 cd
<9> is LDAP still exists?
<8> Ramnath: you don't need to do anything with winecfg for that
<9> that linux documentation stuff and s***
<16> anyone familiar with bristuff ?
<21> KonphuzeD, And if you're more familiar with Cisco IOS, Quagga might make you jump up and down whooping and hollering. I know I did!
<9> GNU/Linux for CIsco yay!
