<0> ok <1> ardinary: depending on where you ran that command, you may have botched some of your systems permissions <2> wastrel: some people like to learn the hard way =D <3> wastrel, seems to me -r would deny read access <0> i made an untitled folder put some files in it and did it there <2> ardinary: there's next to nothing on your system that will fail to run if everything is 777. But it makes it a lot easier for you to accidentally make mistakes. Or if you allow other users on your system, possible for them to make "mistakes" <4> ablyss: anything starting with - is a cli flag. [ugo]-[rwxa] would be a permissions thingy. -R is the recursive flag <0> EVERYTHING IS NOT 777! <5> Xenguy: Oh, one more bit: Do I actually have to save this in a sh file, or just throw it into bash directly? <0> :D <3> wastrel, so capital "R" is the key? <6> tonyyarusso: either is possible, but most direct would be paste it to a command-line and go <7> is there a XChat script that I can use that automatically identifies me to NickServ?? <4> ablyss: chmod -R a-r foo* -R is a cli flag, a-r is an argument <8> eletido: you don't even need a script...it's in the setup for servers/channels <9> Hey, um......I've got some questions about setting up Ubuntu because I need to install it over a different linux distro.
<3> wastrel, ah ha, guess i need to read up on chmod :-) ty <6> ablyss: man chmod (easy as that :-) <4> ablyss: actually you're right. a is implied with chmod -r, making -r a "turn off read" <7> tritium, thanks. i didnt see that before. <8> :) <3> wastrel, uh oh.. not you're scaring me :P <10> How can I get LiveIce to play to a ShoutCast server? <3> not/now <11> what is the process of getting a more recent version of alsa working on breezy <5> Xenguy: 'k, now I have all of my file names ending in .html.txt <6> tonyyarusso: heheh, I knew you were going to say that ;-) <12> Kr4t05> I dont know about it but it seems to me you would tell shoutcast to listen for liveice. shot in the dark <13> Hello. I have a question about xscreensaver. <6> tonyyarusso: what do you want them to be? <10> IdleOne: ShoutCast .conf file doesn't mention liveice. <5> Xenguy: Just .txt. Also, they have
at the end of every line, which isn't even valid html... <13> Has anyone figured out how to make certain screensavers as visualizations in music players? <13> Like for XMMS or anything? <12> Kr4t05> like I said I dont know :/ <10> IdleOne: Unfortunatly, my host doesn't want to install the dependancies I need for icecast. <9> I could use some help installing Ubuntu.... <6> tonyyarusso: OK, so 2 issues... <12> Organs> dualboot or stand alone? <6> tonyyarusso: 1. I would have thought that unhtml would have cleared that tag; maybe you need to fine-tune? (else use an editor or sed to get rid of those... <13> Reason I'm asking this is because I like xflame, but I'd like something similar to it for a visualization on XMMS. <4>
is xhtml isn't it? i forget anymore <14> hey can I dual boot with ubuntu ? <3> yes oklinux <5> Xenguy: Thing is, it's not html, so... <12> !tell oklinux about dualboot <6> tonyyarusso: 2. try either rename (cli) or krename (gui) to m***age the filenames to just *.txt <6> tonyyarusso: If it was me, I'd install krename and give that a go <14> thankyou IdleOne <6> tonyyarusso: that tag is xhtml AFAIK <5> Xenguy: Ah. <12> oklinux> no problem <15> i have problems with dapper <6> tonyyarusso: I'm surprised that unhtml didn't handle it <12> join #ubuntu+1 for help with Dapper :) and pie ! <2> Ooh, is IdleOne the new bot we requested? <5> Xenguy: It spit out a bunch of messages; let me see if I can get those. <12> bot?! that's me. yup <2> hehe <6> tonyyarusso: what spit? <4> mmm pie <16> hi, i'm reinstalling breezy and i want to do partitioning right this time, is the best way to go about it to have like 10gb for / and like the rest for /home ? <17> pie r not square <17> pie are round <9> IdleOne, I'll be running dualboot (Ubuntu and Windows XP), but the problem is that I need to a) remove caOS and b) get a working download mirror <3> CanYouHelpMePlz, i always put everything on one partition, mainly / <12> !tell Organs about dualboot <16> ablyss, i hear that's not the best way to do it. <5> Xenguy: 'not:
' lots of times. <16> should i put /usr/ on it's own partition ? <12> Organs> download mirror for ubuntu? <16> also should swap be a logical or primary partition. <8> CanYouHelpMePlz: it's up to you. Everyone has different ideas on partitioning. <9> IdleOne, I generally know how to do the dualboot process (it's automatic, more or less), but I need a working mirror. <17> if you don't know, put it all on one partition <9> When I do the advanced installation, the default US mirror dosn't work. <12> www.ubuntu.com should have a few working mirros
<6> tonyyarusso: do you use vim by any chance? <5> Xenguy: No. <16> tritium, should /usr/ be on it's own partition ? <17> if you don't know, put it all on one partition <16> okay, one last question. <6> tonyyarusso: K. How many files is it? <16> should swap be logical or primary <8> CanYouHelpMePlz: not necessarily. Like I said, there is no right or wrong on that. <5> Xenguy: Maybe ~18. <17> i don't 'think' it matters but i don't know <18> yo is there some way I can set this edubuntu install to run the gateway firewall pppoe for the network with like dhcp and samba <13> I ***ume nobody's got an idea of what I'm talking about? <8> It doesn't <2> CanYouHelpMePlz, it doesn't really matter. There's some talk about where the swap gets physically located might be important <2> CanYouHelpMePlz, but it's virtually impossible to know that, and it probably doesn't make a big difference; the only real difference would be speed <3> ubuntu runs quite well with no swap if you're careful <18> i can put in a second ethernet card and use this 8port switch here <16> ablyss, i have 1gig ram so do i need a swap? <6> tonyyarusso: 'sed' is probably the best tool for the job; it usually requires a bit a crafting on 1 file before you use a loop to search/replace everything. Or you can use a favourite text editor to search/replace the
tags <17> Finalhazard: all i can tell you is that there are 50billion xmms plugins, bound to be one somewhere (maybe not though) <5> Xenguy: 'k. <19> Hello. I have another question :) Friend trying to install Ubuntu on AMD64 w/Radeon XT 9600 and install works fine, everything is good, but when he logs in, the monitor is blank. It gets the brown background that's standard, but nothing else. You can see the mouse cursor and move it around. ctrl-alt-f2 brings him into the shell, and the shell works fine. But no GUI. <18> !pppoe <20> pppoe is probably https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ADSLPPPoE <13> Ah well. Thanks anyways. <3> CanYouHelpMePlz, swap is only used when you run out of ram, so it doesn't matter <16> ablyss, i doubt it would run out of 1gig of ram <6> tonyyarusso: gedit would probably work - open all the files and do a search/replace; then use krename to rename all the files <2> moew, another ATI card? =( <5> Xenguy: Will look into that in a bit. <16> how big should / be <8> CanYouHelpMePlz: 2-3 GB is sufficient for a standard install <21> does anyone know which text editor supports following feature: convert spaces to tabs upon opening file, and tabs to spaces when saving <19> Managu: It works fine w/Windows XP btw. <22> domagoj, try 'fte' <23> Hey tritium. <2> moew: no doubt. Friend trying to install ubuntu_386 or ubuntu_x86_64 (or whatever the abbrev.s are)? <18> !gateway <20> KonphuzeD: Syntax error in line 1. Try searching at http://ubuntu.cc.com.au/ <8> Hi La_PaRCa <21> fte? any info on that please? i'm comfortable with vi and gedit for my programming. how does fte compare? <23> tritium, I was looking over the Tecra page and wanted to say that sleep works fine on mine. <22> !fte <20> What? Try searching at http://ubuntu.cc.com.au/, Dr_Willis <8> La_PaRCa: let's talk in #ubuntu+1 <22> its a text editor.. apt-get install it and try it out <21> Dr_Willis, thanks. will do just that <22> domagoj, or check out the dozens+ of options for vi. it can proberly do whatever you want <22> domagoj, or 'emacs' *shudder* <22> :P <21> Dr_Willis, ;) <6> tonyyarusso: this seems to work for eliminating
tags - try it one one file to begin with: sed -e 's/
//g' test.html <19> Managu: ubuntu_5.10_amd64.iso <5> Xenguy: Thanks. <4> i bet someone's figured out a way to do that in vim <5> Xenguy: Seems good. <6> tonyyarusso: you redirect to a new .txt file of course <4> domagoj: http://www.cs.utah.edu/~kad/vim/vimnotes.shtml#21 <2> moew: Gotcha. No real experience with that distribution, but I know I shied away from it on my amd64 box. At least when I was installing, the 64 bit port had a status of "well, it sorta works" <24> Hello all <19> Managu: So what works for amd? <2> moew: well, the normal 32bit distribution runs like a charm <25> Question... when I upgrade to an AMD64 processor, do I *need* to use the AMD64 version of Ubuntu? <25> or can I simply continue using what I have so that I can maintain backwards compatability with things like flashplayer and java? <2> Zenethian: no need <21> wastrel, thnx 4 the info. <25> so as long as I'm running a 32bit kernel, I can continue to run my 32bit apps just fine... yay <26> Hi, Ive forgotten. What are the w32 and normal codec packages for totem-xine called? <2> Zene: right. Your applications also need to be compiled 32 bit <19> Managu: What should he do to make the 64 bit work? <27> i want a mirror for http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily/current/dapper-install-i386.iso <6> tonyyarusso: if that works, then the next step is a loop (backup first of course); something like: for i in *txt; do sed -ei 's/
//g' $i.new; done <-- untested <2> moew: no clue. first things I'd try are (a) check the logs for any funny business, and (b) see if you can get a foolsafe session running <26> Hi, Ive forgotten. What are the w32 and normal codec packages for totem-xine called?
