<0> roo_, haven't upgraded yet.. i did not upgrade the kernel for a long time in breezy since its ipw2200 didn't used to work with wpa.. i had to install ipw2200 driver manually each time i upgrade the kernel <1> scud, more then likely not alot of that cisco vpn stuff is closed <2> tuv, ah, ok : <0> roo_, now that it's pretty new, i'm upgrading to dapper and we'll see how it goes <3> I only get about 65 fps in glxgears, although DRI is enabled. Radeon 8500, using the open source driver. What's wrong? <4> adaran: try changing "ati" to "radeon" <5> problem with my virtual consoles, they don't exist, and when i try to launch them, the screen will go black, and i have to restart manually my computer <4> adaran: that's all i can think of <2> tuv, make sure you have the new ipw2200 driver on hd somewhere/cd in case it doesnt work and you need to compile it. <6> scud, vpnc. <7> cool <7> thanks <6> scud, it requires a different config file. <8> Hello room. I was wondering: I have an old laptop, with 80MB (wow!) of Physical RAM. This should be enough to run Ubuntu on. The problem I have is that the laptop BIOS does not allow boot from CD (Which Ubuntu is...) Is there a way I can boot from floppy disk to start with CD support, and then load Ubuntu installer from CD? <6> scud, but it's fairly easy to convert them. I did it a couple of days ago for my father. <9> spikeb, tried already =)
<0> roo_, i did :) just downloaded the driver and the firmware in case.. <4> adaran: i dunno then <9> can you upload your glxinfo ? <10> I had some trouble updating ubuntu and now my screen is stuck in a different display dimension, though I'm not sure if that's the only problem <11> Everyone join #splendid <12> Hello, how do I change the hostname of a machine?????? <1> DarkJesus> go to hell <11> It's about ubuntu, but less crowded <2> tuv, heh, good luck dude, im sure you'll be pleased with dapper. <5> rightsry <6> DarkJesus, please don't. <13> Ernz: i think a grub or lilo floppy ought to do that. i don't know the specifics though. <5> l8r <5> i g2g now <0> roo_, thanks <10> I'm wondering if I should try to downgrade back to Breezy Badger <8> A grub boot disk krazykit? <2> Mysta_, edit /etc/hostname? <14> anyone know why an iBook wouldn't be booting from the dapper live cd? <13> odin__: it's a good way to completely nuke your system <14> i tried holding and tapping the C key <15> can anyone help a newbie in here <1> Ernz> there is a opensource bootloader floppy out there i just cannot remember it off the top of my mind, i used it all the time with older machines search sf.net for it <12> roo_: let me check, thanks <10> krazykit: that doesn't sound very pleasant <2> semotrucker, you should just ask the question :)_ <16> Mysta_, hostname <new name> <13> odin__: it'd be easier to reinstall <8> Ill have a look'see twysted. BRB <10> krazykit: save for the file backup I'd need to do; I heard people saying how they upgraded and downgraded ubuntu all the time <15> i just installed the newest version and this is my first time useing linux <15> i'm lost on installing software that i already had <12> pppoe_dude: does it require a restart? <17> pppoe_dude, Ok. This looks pretty bad. <16> Mysta_, it will change your hostname for that terminal, and if you restart it will change it for the system <13> odin__: well, i wouldn't suggest it. various config files have differing defaults and syntaxes between version. i think it'd be a huge pain in the butt to downgrade. <17> pppoe_dude, On the one hand, I now have a reproducible error. <18> cyphase, try holding the command key and C <16> gentoo_helper, lol <19> after I added some hard drives, grub gives error 17 instead of booting. I booted up the kubuntu liveCD and ran grub-install /dev/sdb (that is the HD with kubuntu on it). no change, so I booted up the liveCD again and mounted sdb1 (I only have one partition), chrooted in and ran grub-install /dev/sdb. This gives me "not found or not a block device". fdisk -l returns "cannot open /proc/partitions" <18> cyphase, when you reboot, that is <17> pppoe_dude, On the other hand, it doesn't back up the "apt-get is bugged" or the "X is misconfigured" hypotheses. <2> semotrucker, what do yo need to install? <13> odin__: basically, i don't know how smart apt/dpkg is about config versioning, if it'll keep a newre config or if it'll use the default. <20> twysted: Is there any way to get GRUB on a floppy or CD to chainload another GRUB on a device unsupported by the BIOS? (I currently boot my USB hard drive from a CD) <17> pppoe_dude, And before you ask, the DRI section at the bottom is in fact commented out. <21> how do you convert a wmv to a dv? <10> krazykit: well might there be any way to fix my display? I think it may have gotten messed up cuz I'm using xinerama for dual-monitor display, but that wasn't the only error message I got when it was updating <15> i am trying to install a game called second life i downloaded unpacked it but i'm lost from there <16> gentoo_helper, lol <13> Warbo: technically, you don't even need to chainload, you can boot straight from that <14> nope <17> pppoe_dude, What's so funny? <18> cjones, mencoder <2> semotrucker, where did it unpack to? <13> odin__: sorry, i don't know anything about xinerama. <15> desktop <16> gentoo_helper, nothing :) <20> krazykit: That is what I do, but if I can chainload then I don't have to rewrite the disc every time I upgrade my kernel <21> dac1138 can i apt get that <22> HELP!!!
<18> cjones, go to freshmeat.net for a frontend to mencoder if the command line is too daunting <16> gentoo_helper, im trying to think of other causes <2> semotrucker, is there not a install/setup program in there? <18> cjones, sure can. mencoder is included with MPlayer <18> cjones, just make sure you have the win32 video codecs installed <21> oh i already have mplayer <22> Oh ****in god help me <22> please, someone! <15> none that i can find but like i said i'm totaly new to linux i've been useing windows way to long <20> krazykit: I actually wrote a guide in the Wiki for it as well :) (BootFromUSB) <13> Warbo: ah... then chainloading should work. it's just not the most elegant solution. i ***ume this i san old machine that doesn't have a BIOS update? <19> after I added some hard drives, grub gives error 17 instead of booting. I booted up the kubuntu liveCD and ran grub-install /dev/sdb (that is the HD with kubuntu on it). no change, so I booted up the liveCD again and mounted sdb1 (I only have one partition), chrooted in and ran grub-install /dev/sdb. This gives me "not found or not a block device". fdisk -l returns "cannot open /proc/partitions" <22> I'm sorry for cursing, just someone! <13> pianoboy3333: just ask the question <23> pianoboy3333, what the problem? <17> pppoe_dude, Here's how you reproduce the error: open up xterm and start installing something with apt-get. Then load up an app that has lots of shiny buttons (or at least on or two buttons) like Xchat. Clock on the button of your choice to alternately lock up or reboot the system. <2> pianoboy3333, what the hell are you talking about? JUST ASK! <10> oh, hey, does anybody know how to get to a laptop's BIOS? it wont seem to let me get to it on this P2 Compaq Armada 1750 <2> odin__, i usually hammer as many keys as i can :) <17> pppoe_dude, *click and *one or two buttons <16> gentoo_helper, lo... that is what's funny. but i guess it is reproducible <16> gentoo_helper, i suggest filing a bug report <13> odin__: compaq? i think it's either f2 or f12 <12> pppoe_dude: after running that command, i cannot restart. I receive an error stating, "sudo: unable to lookup atl-vmware01 via gethostbyname()" <20> krazykit: Well it is a few years old. Booting into GRUB from a floppy or CD and trying to access the USB hard drive is unsuccessful though, so I think GRUB relies on the BIOS for getting it's device information <17> pppoe_dude, This is in no way funny. The fact that my last Ubuntu install had errors just as serious (on a nvidia card, no less) is really not giving me a good imperssion. :( <17> pppoe_dude, You honestly think this is a bug? <23> Just calm down and clearly state your problem. This is the ubuntu support channel, not cleo's help hotline. I'm sure a bunch of us will be glad to help you pianoboy if you tell us what the matter is. <22> I just tried to install xubuntu on to an external drive, but it wrote over my main drive, and formatted the backup on my external drive too <10> krazykit: all the function keys don't work, the best I can get is the boot menu for Windows 2000 <22> it's all gone <22> am I totally screwed? <13> odin__: what about escape? <24> what do you guys think is the fastest audio play between the two? rhythmbox or banshee? <16> gentoo_helper, or bad hardware... im not sure. Do you think it might b something else? maybe your harddisk? <13> pianoboy3333: more or less, yeah. <10> krazykit: heh, I guess I'll just try to hit all the keys, then <25> gentoo_helper, I can't reproduce. <6> D1, fastest!? <26> pianoboy: your pretty much **** outa luck <2> pianoboy3333, in short, most probably <23> Quite. Likely. I don't think there is much in the way of undeletion with linux. <24> I mean, less memory intensive, sorry. <2> pianoboy3333, did you triple check the parition part of the install? <16> gentoo_helper, i've never had such problems (lockups, reboots) with ubuntu <17> rixth, No? Do you have an S3 Inc prosavage card using the savage driver with DRI enabled? <17> pppoe_dude, Then I must be very unlucky. :) <6> pianoboy3333, there is some possibility to recover. <25> gentoo_helper, man, do you haVE A pENTIUM ii OR SOMETHING? <25> E, caps. <22> Fujitsu: like? <20> pianoboy3333: If it was merely formatted then you could probably get your data back, but if something else has been written to it then you are screwed (either by losing your data or by paying extortionate fees for data recovery experts) <16> gentoo_helper, afraid so ';( <17> pppoe_dude, Just so you know the Kubuntu install (that I had difficulties with) was on a different machine. I may have mentioned that or something. <23> Now , pianoboy3333, how did the stuff go away? Did you delete it? did it disappear? <22> ok <22> now <22> this is what happened <17> rixth, No. It's an Athlon XP 2400+ <25> pianoboy3333, stop using the drive NOW <22> so I am, and was on the xubuntu live cd <22> I'm not on the drive now <25> pianoboy3333, have you got more than one PC in your household? <22> yes <16> gentoo_helper, sorry but im all out of ideas <22> but I'm on the live cd now <2> pianoboy3333, what filesystem types were the partitions wiped? <22> ext3 <22> hold on <22> so <27> I've installed vsftpd - how can i allow users to access files - after creating users for them that is- <22> lemme tell the story <17> pppoe_dude, Well... <16> Mysta_, how are you restarting?
