<0> eugman: no, there is only one OS installed. Grub takes too long to start the kernel image. Until, then it runs fasteer
<1> deb http://pl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy-backports main restricted universe multiverse
<1> deb-src http://pl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy-backports main restricted universe multiverse
<2> newbuntie: lol,. do not use backports
<3> apokryphos, absolutely right - but being less popular means less attention from the bad guys
<3> it's just a side effect
<4> http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=128138
<1> pygi: why not?
<5> oh well I can help there. I know how to speed things up once you get to the ubuntu logo and the brown text.
<2> newbuntie: cause it's generally bad idea
<6> i actually disagree with you apokryphos as apache has 70% of the market
<5> er can't
<1> pygi: not safe? ok, what repository is unrar-nonfree in?
<7> virogenesis: it does, but it most ***uredly doesn't have a truly significant amount of the desktop world.
<0> eugman: it even timesout on the splash and starts booting with the normal-text boot
<8> WiFiTux, so you're saying its impossible to secure a windows box?

<2> newbuntie: multiverse
<6> apokryphos, true but defacing a site is seen to be such a impresive thing to those that know nothing
<9> hi
<2> dylan: depends on what level of security you want and how good administrator is
<10> Pygi, why is using backports a bad ida
<9> bye
<11> does anyone know how to change the fonts back to the default on dapper flight 2 ? lol
<2> mcquaid: because backports might broke something, and new users won't be able to deal with that
<10> maybe new users won't, but the nice thing is the old version is still there, they just have to force version in synaptic
<12> note to all newbies: restart firefox after installing java :|
<13> mcquaid: forcing is bad :(
<2> mcquaid: and I still say that nobody without experience should use backports
<10> naw, i've used it a few times without issue
<13> mcquaid: its generally not a good idea to force something
<2> mcquiad: you were just lucky then :)
<10> Pygi, here's the problem, people want new software, without waiting 6 months
<14> Heya, does anyone recall where I can find kernel boot options for ubuntu?
<0> Pygi: how are they going to get the expertise without breaking?
<0> brakeing
<0> dam
<13> mcquaid: /boot.grub/menu.lst
<6> WiFiTux, is correct
<15> Woo, finally installed my wireless USB card
<13> /boot/grub/menu.lst
<16> Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter now disconnected from ttyUSB1
<2> WiFiTux: let them get expertise by compiling, exploring, not by using backports
<16> I don't see ttyUSB1
<16> any suggestions?
<2> mcquaid: users like that should use daily build of dapper :)))
<10> ya i guess, but that could be too cutting edge, esp in the early months
<2> mcquaid: then just go, and compile it for urself
<2> no backports :)))
<17> how can i set up a network share for windows to access?
<10> most window users are used to the mentaility of grab exe double click, have new program
<17> !share
<18> percent20: Did you get hit by a windmill? Try searching at http://ubuntu.cc.com.au/
<10> Pygi, thats what i do
<10> but you can't pitch compiling to new users
<2> mcquaid: let them use PC BSD then if they want installation/start with double click
<19> has anyone here gotten google talk to work with WINE? I can get it on screen, but it can't connect to the internet...
<20> hey
<15> hello
<20> how can i import pictures off my kodak camera?
<17> it is also hard to sell cli to newbs too
<2> piano: google talk works with any app that supports jabber
<20> via usb
<21> italy: a symbolic link should be created by the dynamic device mapping system as /dev/pilot
<22> what's your favourite FTP program? I have been trying gFTP but it keeps crashing on me
<15> anything in /media/?
<10> for example, i'm using ekiga (gnomemeeting) from cvs. they make deb sid, breezy and dapper and rpm packages daily, or at least with each new checkout
<23> google talk is also integrated into the gmail site now..
<16> JustinLynn, I got it.. now I can't get jpilot to do jack
<10> i wish more software could be like that
<21> danielgravenor: are you attempting to connect to an sftp server?
<13> antics: not yet
<10> and they run repositories, so it's apt-getable
<22> JustinLynn, just a regular ftp server
<13> antics: its there but they are not working yet
<23> gnomefreak: it is on my end
<2> antics: I got it :)
<21> italy: are you getting any error messages?

<13> they werent working lastnight
<14> Jimmy, did you get my IM?
<24> Jimmy__: how did you go? working now?
<24> Dtragcoen: hehe ;)
<22> JustinLynn, I used to use FlashFXP on windows, but it wont work with wine ... so I need a new one
<25> Can I get connected to myself using ssh, but with mystification of my ip ?
<21> danielgravenor: just one moment and i look for something similar
<19> Pygi: what is jabber? GAIM?
<22> JustinLynn, thanks :)
<2> piano: GAJIM seems nice
<1> pygi: ok, got it installed, thx
<24> anyone here know much about technical things? My monitor keeps flicking on and off for a split second, ever 5-10 mins or so! Any ideas of a cause?
<13> jabber is another chat client like aim or yahoo
<20> anyone have any idea
<2> newbuntie: congrats :))))
<26> hey all.
<17> anyone know how to setup a windows share?
<19> Pygi: but there is no google talk choice, there is only yahoo, aim, IRC, MSN, and some others
<2> piano: find jabber
<13> pianoboy3333: ther eis jabber
<24> gnomefreak: any ideas? :) when in doubt, ask gnomefreak :)
<17> pianoboy3333: there is a way to configure using jabber
<27> percent20 check out the wiki
<28> anyone know where i might find a qt4.1 package?
<13> eternaljoy: what did i do :(
<13> eternaljoy: whats up?
<24> gnomefreak: when in doubt, ask gnomefreak :)
<17> gdub: been searching can't find anything that works
<26> I'm trying to install ubuntu server on a supermicro with an adaptex RAID controller. (i2o) -- it kernel panics while booting the installer kernel... any ideas how to get around that?
<24> gnomefreak: My monitor keeps flicking on and off for a split second, ever 5-10 mins or so! Any ideas of a cause?
<19> gnomefreak: I did sudo apt-get install jabber, now what?
<2> ruaok: #ubuntu-server
<26> Pygi: oh, thanks!
<13> eternaljoy: check the refreash rate
<26> ta tat
<13> pianoboy3333: why?
<29> I booted to a live cd and when it booted to a black screen. I restarted the computer and windows now won't boot. Windows cd now won't boot
<13> gaim supports jabber
<2> piano: no , buh...you can configure it in GAIM
<24> gnomefreak: why check refresh rate? its at 85Hz as always
<13> pianoboy3333: open gaim and use jabber
<13> eternaljoy: flickering is cause by a few things one being something eltrical too close to moniter
<19> gnomefreak: ok, do a apt-get install? then open gaim?
<17> pianoboy3333: http://pure-essence.net/archives/2005/12/30/config-gaim-for-gtalk/\
<10> gnomefreak, you should be able to answer this, how do i safely shut down gconf, i want to remove something from my ~.gconf
<2> piano: no, no install ...
<13> pianoboy3333: no just open gaim
<19> link doesn't work
<14> imp3r1um, that sounds like a hardware or BIOS bug..
<2> mcquaid: killall gconf :))
<17> take out the last \
<21> danielgravenor: try SwiftFXP, you can download it from http://sourceforge.net/projects/swiftfxp/
<10> heh
<27> percent20, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MountWindowsSharesPermanently
<29> Dtragcoen: it was working fine before
<13> eternaljoy: did you install any drivers?
<24> gnomefreak: none
<13> eternaljoy: it just started flickering?
<17> gdub: i wanna do it the other way sort of iw anna create a share on linux to let windows see it
<27> ah.
<13> eternaljoy: take refresh rate down to 75 and see if it still does it
<13> mcquaid: why would i beable to answer that? :( maybe i should
<30> hey, how do i reach a hidden directory in the gnome browser?
<13> beleive it or not i have not used gconf :(
<0> jack: view, location, bla/.bla
<0> Jahooty: up
<30> there is no place to type in a path
<10> ya i don't know, just through it at ya ;) i think i found it anyway
<30> i can show hidden but that's tedious
<14> imp3r1um I believe you. If you feel safe about it, you might try resetting your BIOS and checking to see that no hardware is damaged. Occasionally bad hardware has been known to die with Knoppix (another livecd distro) live-cds because of the intensive probing process. I don't know if ubuntu has the same problem.
<13> mcquaid: im in wm more than i am gnome now a days
<10> i think i should get out of gnome to do what i want to do, cause i think gconf just gets restarted
<0> Jahooty: and there is a way to preferences to let yuou look hiden filkes
<22> JustinLynn, thanks :)
