<0> can you install programs while runnign dapper live?...... ***uming you have enough ram of course
<1> Warbo: thanks, ill try that
<2> LinuxJones_, yes
<3> hi
<2> om
<4> gnomefreak: german
<5> gavagai: xchat-gnome crashed alot when trying ot use the system tray plugin, is it jus tnot compatable? also the adept/synaptics i guess they dont crash but they dont always come up?
<2> LinuxNIT, yes
<6> Zipp: #ubuntu-de
<7> hav0k: Don't mis-type it :)
<0> Eleaf, hehe thanks
<8> hav0k, and use sudo :)
<2> Now seriously, why can I not close 50% of my windows in dapper?!
<2> This is one sensational bug.
<3> does anyone knows how festival (a text to speech app) works ?
<4> gnomefreak: it's 3am in germany, theres noone there who can help me

<9> silly question: i just installed Dapper (clean install over Breezy)... what program gives me the 'mail' command from cli?
<1> hahaha, ok
<9> i can't remember!
<6> jbirdAngel: xchat-gnome didnt last long as default during install
<10> jbirdAngel: hmm... hard to say for sure, unless you've forced stuff to install etc.
<2> javiolo, yes.
<11> warbo im having trouble installing the xmms wma file
<6> Zipp: go to sleep than? you can bet at 3:30am i will be
<6> lol
<12> Zipp, are you new to using WLAN in ubuntu?
<7> disinterested_pe: What kind of file is it? tar.gz, rpm, deb?
<1> well, wait, its an external drive... well an internal drive in an external housing... does that matter?
<3> Eleaf how ? festival -i file.txt ??
<11> deb
<13> Okay, I have some movies on my computer, They play with any player, but i have no sound on them anyone know how to fix that?>
<5> gnomefreak: why is that, what does gnome suggest using? id like to be able to adjust the notifies more in it but i like it alot so far, with the message notification and all
<4> blitzace: I*m new to using Ubuntu
<2> javiolo, type "festival" at a terminal. This is its interface. The easiest way to make it say something is this. Type "(SayText "hello, I am talking")" SayText is case sensitive
<5> bobstro: what do you mean by forcing stuff to install
<6> jbirdAngel: gnome doesnt suggest using an irc app
<2> javiolo, or you can just have it read text files.
<14> hmmm
<7> hav0k: As long as you know it's name (you can even do that command to a file, then mount the file with the loop option)
<14> is there anyway I can resize the resolution of my screen once X is started?
<6> jbirdAngel: ubuntu added/pulled it out not gnome
<11> oooops rpm
<1> Warbo: alright
<14> stepmania just seg faulted, and I'm in 640 x 480
<6> disinterested_pe: try not to install rpms please look for a deb for it
<8> [BreliC], mailutils & mailx
<5> gnomefreak: okay, does that just mean that gnome doesnt have a specificly created one the way kde does with konversation?
<15> Snow_Shelter, yeah, it is like ctrl +/- or something like that, i can't remember exactly
<4> gnomefreak: do you think the problem is that i'm using xchat?
<11> ok
<6> disinterested_pe: alien is not all that safe in alot of cases
<16> duh, just figured it out. I followed the guide that makes 'thefuture' command, forgot I had to type it every time.
<6> Zipp: for what?
<4> for my prob
<12> sorry Zipp I don't have much experience with wireless I thought it might be a simple problem but it seems not
<17> any ideas why my ubuntu randomly crashes? ive set already RenderAccel to false and ive changed the kernel to a k7 smp kernel but i have still the same problem with random hardlocks :(
<5> gnomefreak: why did they decide to not have xchat-gnome as part of the default do you know
<6> jbirdAngel: no i dont htink they do im not sure who built/maintains xchat-gnome
<7> disinterested_pe: It isn't a very important package so you should be fine. Install alien "sudo apt-get install alien" then use it "sudo alien packagename.rpm" and finally install the package you made "sudo dpkg -i packagename.deb"
<5> gnomefreak: okay thanks
<14> gavagai, no, I need to change resolution on the fly, not resize a window
<9> nickrud: thanks :)
<1> hmm, Warbo and nickrud, it says that it "Will not try to make filesystem on full-disk device '/dev/sdb' (Use -I if wanted)
<18> any suggestions for good mySql admin guis? no, not phpMyAdmin
<12> Snow_Shelter, isnt it Ctrl+Alt - or +
<1> what does that even mean?
<6> Zipp: sounds like a proixy issue
<3> Eleaf thanks, running festival works, but Im trying to read a textfile, how can I do it ?
<6> -i
<12> to increase/decrease rez
<11> theres a tar bz2 but no debs
<7> hav0k: That is your drive. You want to make it on the PARTITION (like sdb1, sdb2, etc)
<8> hav0k, it'll be something like sdb1 or 2 or some other number for the partition
<19> aas!
<1> oh, okay
<4> gnomefreak: I think i don't have a proxy
<19> alo a hay alguien?

<6> blitzace: not res it just zooms in and out
<3> !es
<20> Para Espaol por favor usen #ubuntu-es, #kubuntu-es o #edubuntu-es, alli obtendran mas ayuda.
<4> gnomefreak: not really knowing what a proxy is
<2> javiolo, I don't have festival installed on my computer. try festival --help and it should give the option to read a text file.
<1> well, how do i know what number it is? i have it hooked up through a usb...
<21> is there a really good recording app for linux a la wiretap?
<12> yes it is res I just tried it
<14> blitzace, nope, that isn't working either
<19> ulitas
<3> Eleaf thanks
<7> hav0k: s/c/fdisk will make partitions that you can format
<6> Zipp: my point alot of people have that issue they shouldnt go through a proxy but ubuntu pushes them to one
<22> anybody know why itc support is depreciated in dapper drake?
<11> warbo will tar bz2 work in breezy?
<12> have you got all the resolutions you want set in xorg.conf?
<7> disinterested_pe: Yes
<11> ok
<22> errr itc I meant IRC support
<7> disinterested_pe: Extract it then go in it with a terminal
<14> blitzace, yes, but when an app that changes the resolution crashes, it leaves it in 640, and I have to kill X to reset it, and that's annoying
<1> s/c/fdisk, what does that mean?
<14> whatever, I'll just kill X already
<14> *killing X*
<7> disinterested_pe: What is in there? Does it look like source code (README, INSTALL, configure, stuff like that?)
<17> any ideas why my ubuntu randomly crashes? ive set already RenderAccel to false and ive changed the kernel to a k7 smp kernel but i have still the same problem with random hardlocks :(
<4> gnomefreak: did i get you right?: ubuntu forces people to use a problem without telling them and this proxy causes problems?
<2> lol
<6> Zipp: not always im thinking it has something to do with thier isp
<7> hav0k: fdisk, sfdisk or cfdisk
<23> gaah...im going insane...how the heck do i get through to my xdmcp server...an netstat -l shows it running...but i cant connect?
<12> Snow_Shelter, I've had the same prob as you b4
<4> gnomefreak: isp is the company you "get your internet" from
<12> you can change it without killing X
<6> Zipp: yes
<12> it's just a chore
<14> blitzace, ok, well I've fixed it now
<13> Okay, I have some movies on my computer, They play with any player, but i have no sound on them anyone know how to fix that?>
<24> how can i uninstall picasa?
<4> gnomefreak: thanks, gives my problem some substance
<7> searayman: Did you use a .deb file? It will be in Synaptic
<12> Snow_Shelter, good, pity you had to kill X to do it tho
<3> Sometimes my computer its very slow, Id like to know why, I dont know if its my hd or ram or...
<24> Warbo: i downloaded it from google
<25> Hey ive got a problem. I've got a toughbook i want to install ubuntu on. It has no cd-rom, just a floppy..it has NO os on it right now..is there a way to install ubuntu on it ?
<11> warbo its saying no such file or directory
<26> anethema: it have a NIC?
<12> Anyway..... could I please get some help running my sound blaster live! 24bit under Dapper Drake? The sound output works but I can't get the microphone working at all.
<25> yes, a pcmcia one
<1> Warbo: how can i find out what the number is for the external hd? i would guess it would be /dev/sdb1, but i dont know how to find out... under the disk manager, it just has it as /dev/sdb
<27> Need help with Apache2 and Dapper, I installed forums. Me as a local user can access all pages but others can not access forum except index page... What is the problem?
<7> disinterested_pe: ? Extarct the file (double click it to open file-roller) then have a look inside
<28> I'm on am AMD64 Compaq Laptop with an NVIDIA Card. I can't seem to get my 3d acceleration to work. I tried Method 1 from the guide in the forums, with no luck. Here's what I get when I try and run torcs to test the Open GL "freeglut (/usr/lib/torcs/torcs-bin): OpenGL GLX extension not supported by display ':0.0'". What is the problem? What can I do?
<11> ok
<25> Flannel: with a nic..how do i boot into the install to get it going? is there a ubuntu network install floppy or something ?
<26> Vaske_Car: sounds like a configuration problem, in php, or whatever the forum is in.
<29> Vaske_Car, check that the site is bound to an external interface
<30> does ubuntu use Grub or Lilo?
<12> grub
<7> hav0k: The first partition on it is sdb1, the second is sdb2 like that. Run "sudo fdisk -l /dev/sdb" to see the numbers
<30> k, thx blitz
<12> no probs
<17> any ideas why my ubuntu randomly crashes? ive set already RenderAccel to false and ive changed the kernel to a k7 smp kernel but i have still the same problem with random hardlocks :(
<27> I did default LAMP installation
<1> okay
<14> blitzace, piece of **** did it again
<31> How do I close parted in konsole?
<12> haha
<24> Warbo: i cant find how to uninstall it
<27> could it be my router (PS: i opened port 80)
<25> Flannel: ?
<7> searayman: Do you still have the file you downloaded from Google? What is it called?
<26> anethema: http://gridpt1.fe.up.pt/mlopes/blog/index.php/ubuntu-network-install/ there's no 'official' way, but a few methods of doing it. googling for ubuntu network install, gives a few, if this one doesn't work
