<6> If your drive has smartdrive tech, you might check it to see if it's ok and not failing. Every time I've noted a drastic slowdown in a hard drive, it was a smartdrive. I don't know if the slowdown was it trying to keep itself from failing or trying to read bad sectors over and over.
