<9> gonzobrains: things like Ubuntu have kernels with *ALL* features enabled for a large range of desktop machines. Same goes fo the userapce apps. You can fix that by rebuilding, but on specialised distros, others do that, so you don't need to bother :-)

<17> I guess automatix is unsafe, it overwrites configuration files, and does things like "echo -e 'y\nY\n'" that are considered risky. Please do not use it. There are alternative applications, but it's often best to read the documentation.
