<0> lol <1> golly, you've not given yourself root on that too? :/ <2> ompaul: i see <3> Roningurl...you can do what you want ...you just need to know how to do it without putting your whole system in jeopardy...soemthing you should be familair with as a windows user <2> GNU Fish And Chips ? <4> k31th, yes please :) <1> yay, dapper's burned. if this has problems, it's back to Solaris 10 for me :) <5> http://packages.ubuntu.com/warty/virtual/nes-emulator <6> Running on root is not a bad thing, it really isnt. Not when you are responsible, which I am. I have not gotten a single virus, piece of spyware or other malware in over 3 years on Windows XP. <5> thats the emulator.. <4> !tell brett` about dapper <7> so, has anyone seen the new Gnome? <7> it looks pretty <5> !nes-emulator <8> I don't know, try searching at http://ubuntu.cc.com.au/, armos <5> ...
<9> RoninGurl, that you've noticed. <6> my system is clean and i keep frequent ghost backups. <6> im very aware of every piece of software on windows. <4> leetcharmer, one shall wait until it comes out with the dapper release on the 20th of April <10> hey I have the window list on the left somehow <10> how do I get it back to the bottom? <7> ompaul, it's coming out w/ dapper? sweet! <1> ompaul: well, I'm impressed with dapper already, it seems to install at 1600*1200 okay, which is new <6> I know ubuntu made a design decision to make the root account inaccessable through login screen, which is what ive heard, hence sudo su to everything. but i just dont like file access errors on my computers. <7> RoninGurl, don't ghost in linux, just .tgz backups :D <1> RoninGurl: if you want a root account, do 'sudo p***wd'. then you can just su to it <6> Ghost is better because it copies the partition tables and MBR <6> and restores it beautifully <6> gzip cant compare <1> aye, I use ghost n'all <11> hi there <6> nor can dd <7> RoninGurl, what's wrong wtih DD? <12> hello, anyone in here have an idea as to either what's wrong with or how long the canadian ubuntu servers will be down <7> dd* <13> helloooooo <11> hi moobie <13> i have rootkits and backdoor in my system :S <7> RoninGurl, dd should be able to do it just fine on the same hardware <13> how clean my sys ? <11> oh darned <6> it doesnt hold a candle to ghost. when was the last time dd restored your partition table and partitions when all hell broke loose to a working status. <11> sorry <5> http://packages.ubuntu.com/warty/virtual/nes-emulator <6> i prefer ghost for backups <6> i trust it <5> need help installing emalator <6> have had 1 bad image in 4 years <4> RoninGurl, I have not ever had a virus or piece of spy ware in 10 + years of running non windows software but you don't see me bragging about it, it is a fact of life, and ohh I don't have to go down the road to get locks and the like (firewall av software) for my O/S ohh well guess I am happy as I am thanks :) <14> brett`: ???? <13> i have rootkits and backdoor in my system :S <13> how clean my sys ? <1> sorry Rondom, one 'tab' too short <9> armos, It doesn't look like it provides a .desktop file to be included in the menu <4> moobie, install GNU/Linux <5> how am i supposed to get to it? <14> already thought so <7> RoninGurl, :/ it restored everything just fine when I was needing to fix my xbox hdd <6> ompaul, its not that im bragging about it, i just dont like people telling me convoluded "its bad, trust us" answers when I know what im doing. <5> ./???? <6> i want my question answered <6> no convoluded trust us stuff <1> which question? <9> armos, see file:////usr/share/doc/fceu/fceultra.html for some information <3> RoninGurl, your question was answered by brett <15> Once you understand what a partition table is and what it does, you'll realize that there's no magic to what Ghost does. If you like the fancy interface, then that's fine. But as far as "features" go, there isn't much there. <6> how do i get root account, if i need it, from login screen, and how can i get rid of the file access errors. <5> alright... <1> RoninGurl: 'sudo p***wd' <7> RoninGurl, I'd suggest checkin' out Automatix and telling it to install root properties into nautulus, you can get Automatix from the ubuntuforums.org <9> armos, type fceu at the command prompt, not that it'll probably help you any :) <16> RoninGurl: what file access errors? <4> !automatix <8> Automatix is unsafe, it overwrites configuration files, and does other harmful things like "echo -e 'ynY\n'" that are considered security risks. Please do not use it. There are alternative applications but the best thing is to read documentation. <6> ubuntuforums is hardly online. i almost gve up going. *sigh* <6> but ill look
<6> thanks <17> hola <17> alguien me puede ayudar <16> !es <3> !es <8> Hispanohablantes: Por favor usen #ubuntu-es, #kubuntu-es o #edubuntu-es, alli obtendran mas ayuda. <15> Also note that doing backups via drive image is almost always the wrong design. You want a backup that you can restore to production use on a new system after your existing one dies, and that almost always means doing filesystem space backups and writing restoration documentation. Disk images are really only useful for a single desktop machine. <3> lol <1> gahh... why does Breezy have my network card drivers, but dapper doesn't? <1> arghh <6> andyross, ive managed to restore single partitions quite often if it breaks and even extract the specific files with ghost explorer. ghost serves me quite well. <6> its my preference. used it for years. failed me only once. <12> so does anyone know why maybe the .ca ubuntu servers are down, i can't update my apt <7> brett`, it didn't work? <4> RoninGurl, you asked a question about what happens when you run nautilus as sudo that starts nautilus as root as for no desktop that does >> sudo nautilus --no-desktop << <18> can someone help me get vncserver working? <15> I'm not saying it doesn't work. Just that the features you want are available elsewhere. If you want to flame, then fine. If you want to learn about backups, I'd suggest doing more research instead of flaming about Ghost. :) <1> leetcharmer: it probably would, if I took the effort to build a kernel for this system. which I might do.. <4> RoninGurl, as for --no-desktop that does >>Do not manage the desktop ignore the preference set in the preferences dialog. <19> DeMoNSeEd: sometimes servers have issues <19> leave it an hour and try again <4> RoninGurl, was there something else? <6> im not flaming andyross. im just stating my preference. <20> Hi <7> brett`, hehe, kk <6> ive neer gotten dd to backup a partition table <6> and restore it successfully <12> not likely to be long term ...i hope as it's been down since this morning <10> how do you change the position of the window bar? <20> I'm having an issue with access my Windows File partition mount <21> only once. Once is enough <1> RoninGurl: you don't need to, iirc you can dump output from fdisk, and then import it again <1> there's something similar on Solaris (fmthard) <15> RoninGurl: please stop the flamage. The partition table is in the first 512 byte sector of your disk. If you weren't able to back up 512 bytes with dd, you are doing it wrong. <12> k, thanks Kaiser_Sleeps , it does happen a lot with the .ca one though, it's far from an isolated time, could i just change to us servers? <20> I'm having an issue with access my Windows File partition mount <6> im not flaming andyross. i was a bit combative because i was getting elitist linux user "trust us, its bad (windows user)" talk. but i was not flaming. thanks for answering the question. <22> whats the best way to update firefox in ubuntu? <19> DeMoNSeEd: sure. i have the same issue with the .au servers. <16> dsf: synaptic <19> use wichever you like <15> Last I checked, "flaming" and "combative" mean more or less the same thing. Ask nicely and people will help. Start (or continue) flame wars and they won't. <20> dsf: sudo apt-get update --> sudo apt-get upgrade <12> so is it as simple for the us ones as just putting .us as opposed to .ca <9> RoninGurl, You were getting that advice for a reason, you were also gave the way to do it if you really want to. <9> DeMoNSeEd, yup <6> i did ask nicely, and i took several tries to goet it answered. but whatever. im done with the argument. this is childish. thanks for the help. <20> Will someone please help me mount my Windows partition correctly? <16> zebraFusion: have you read the wiki page? <20> On my desktop there is a link to HDA1 (the Windows partition) but it says I cannot access to the files <7> zebraFusion, sudo mount -t vfat /dev/hd(whatever) <22> _jason, zebraFusion: is the comment in the welcome screen of the channel right? it says breezy won <20> _jason: Yes, I'm not sure if that's the correct way to do it as it's already mounted <12> k, thanks a bunch folks...oh yeah, 1 last thing, no biggie, but just to ask, when might we be getting seamonkey on repos? <9> DeMoNSeEd, or maybe it's .com for america ....not 100% thinking about it. <7> zebraFusion, sudo mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 <12> k <7> zebraFusion, sudo mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/*folder U make* <12> i'll try both <22> _jason , zebraFusion: breezy won't get firefox 1.5 <16> ubotu: tell zebraFusion mountwindows <20> uboto: tell zerbraFUsion about mountwindows <16> zebraFusion: in that page you will see a table under 'editing fstab' (probably a different title) and it will tell you what options you need to give everyone access <9> DeMoNSeEd, When there's a new upstream release, maybe. <20> _jason: there's no link <18> anyone use VNC? <16> zebraFusion: the wiki link <16> ubotu: tell LiteHedded about anyone <20> _jason, there was no link. <23> _jason: how do I set nmap to scan all the subnets of a specified ip? eg: 123.45.7.* <16> ubotu: tell zebraFusion about mountwindows <18> _jason I already asked a question
