Comments:

<0> you use chown for that
<1> my external drive and all of its files are set as root
<2> SUggestions?
<1> and I want them all to be the username that I actually use
<3> roxanne, icewm is small and fast
<0> say your username is "user" and you want to take ownership of all files in /var
<0> you would say [ chown user /var --recursive
<0> ]
<4> roxanne: what errors are you getting with xfce? during install? i am currently installing, so not much help
<5> Whats a good gui partition app?
<6> cpt_foo: I like GParted myself.
<2> nonick, icewm? is it user friendly? On a scale from one to ten, ten being greater than one how would you rate icewm for it's userfriendliness.
<1> wow
<1> I had forgotten how many files are on that drive
<2> no install problems.
<0> now, for my problem

<0> anyone working on fglrx in flight 6?
<4> roxanne: icewm looks like windows/explorer etc. and is easy and light. but i still prefer xfce.
<2> walden, no insall problems, it just doesn't recognise my account as the root user.
<4> roxanne: ah. well. what are you trying to do?
<0> I'm getting an error saying that the installed kernel module is incompatible
<2> walden... i'm just logging into a session.
<4> roxanne: and there is no root user in ubuntu.. you should be able to do things with "sudo"
<2> walden without that alls o important toolbar xfce4 is useless.
<5> ok why can't i make a partition.. grr... i want to cut a chunk out of my / partition
<4> hm.
<5> for my /home partition
<2> walden, sudo?
<1> what does the little blue bar under my user list mean? it keeps movin
<4> cpt_foo: use gnu parted. or gparted.
<1> and it's driving me crazy
<1> (in x-chat)
<5> walden, I am but it wont let me
<7> would it matter if I installed java in my home directory to get mozilla plugins working?
<2> walden I"m new to linux, and although i'm betting that that is a command for the terminal, I don't know how or when to use it.
<8> IamEthos, I think those are lag or something like that
<1> oh
<1> interesting
<0> roxanne, sudo is a command that lets users run programs as if they were root
<4> roxanne: see.. it is like this. when you need to do something that needs root user privileges, you open a terminal and type "sudo command" and it will ask you for your userp***word and do the job
<1> alright
<1> i'm hoping to work early tomorrow
<1> so I'm off to bed
<1> goodnight everyone
<9> hi
<9> #ubuntu-offtopic
<9> how do u get in the offtopic room
<10> cutein: /join #ubuntu-offtopic
<11> when configuring wlan0 (wireless net device), what should my WEP key look like if it's hex?
<2> walden, i couldn't open a terminal or anything without that xfce toolbar that won't open because i'm not "root"
<9> tahnks
<4> roxanne: oh. :( hope that does'nt happen to me. i am still downloading the xfce desktop using apt-get. will tell you when i have installed.
<4> but dialup ****s.
<9> im banned
<12> allow me to interject an observation. this chatroom has failed to even reply to my last n+5 questions. why has the quality of the help dwindled?
<11> why is it that whenever i select "key type: hexadecimal", it changes back to ascii every time i reopen the config dialog?
<13> hi! is it possible to get back to previous version of a package? I download the newest wine, but it doesn't work too well
<11> and is there a better ubuntu wireless howto than that diabolikal garbage?
<4> mojojojo_: maybe you can use apt-get to purge the package, and installer the older version?
<4> s/installer/install
<9> bibi ever1
<10> _trojan_: The ones who know the most are not always able to hang in here. The ones that are currently in, might just not know the answers to your questions.
<6> _trojan_: Because nobody here at the moment happens to know the answer to them.
<6> _trojan_: Try back at different times and hopefully you'll have better luck.
<4> How do you get that @unaffiliated/nickname thing ?
<14> I'm trying to bind a key combo to to execute /usr/bin/3ddesk, how do I go about doing that?
<4> tonyyarusso: thanks.
<2> walden, for your sake I hope it doesn't happen to you.
<11> is there anyone here who even has wireless working?
<6> Phunker: (Score! I learned this today!) Install xbindkeys and xbindkeys-config, run the first, then run the second, and that will give you a GUI interface to set a key to a custom command, then you just have to check 3ddesk --help for what you want that command to say. I have a forums link too if that is unclear.
<15> Good eve.
<2> walden, for now i'll just completely remove kde and xfce and try icewm. if i need to i'll reinstall xfce and fight with it then.
<14> tonyyarusso: nice, thx
<4> roxanne: good luck. but you have the default gnome. right?
<6> Phunker: (Thread 79560)
<14> tonyyarusso: I got it, im not a noob ;) I had already read the man page, just didn't know how to set the bind
<4> my ubuntu desktop shoes 3 disk icons for my windows partitions.. if i delete them(adn how do i delete them from the desktop), will the data there be lost?

<6> Phunker: 'k, sounds good. Enjoy! (It's quite slick, isn't it?)
<16> anyone know why a recent (~ 3 weeks ago?) update would have botched my firefox vlc plugin? I can't play most videos in my browser anymore.
<14> tonyyarusso: it segfaults :-/
<6> Phunker: Uh oh.
<17> what would be wiser
<18> Is there any easy way to alter the refresh rate in Ubuntu?
<14> tonyyarusso: hmm, worked the next time though
<17> stick with my x86 linux or go to x86-64
<6> Phunker: Weird. Late April Fool's?
<17> is there any performance to be expected with x86-64
<4> ok, time to logout and get back into xfce
<14> tonyyarusso: no idea ;)
<19> the answer to my question.. Monotype is Bitstream Vera Sans Mono, located in the ttf-bitstream-vera package
<4> roxanne: hey, xfce works fine
<4> roxanne: you said you could'nt get the XFCE desktop/menus.. did you try right clicking on the desktop?
<4> roxanne: that will bring up the menu
<14> I had that same problem with dapper
<14> Unless i started xfce manually, with startxfce4
<4> what error?
<14> no error, just no panels or menus showing up in xfce
<4> eh? what panels are supposed to show up?
<4> and how do you use startxfce?
<4> because.. you choose the xfce session from the gdm screen, right?
<4> or do you boot to text and then startx?
<14> the bottom kicker like panel, and ther top panel which shows the taskbar type thing
<4> i have them...
<4> all showing good.
<14> i boot to text, and type "startxfce4"
<4> i installed xubuntu-desktop though
<14> same here
<4> in 6.06
<14> it doesnt work for me
<4> weird.
<14> i tried it with gdm and kdm
<20> Hi all!
<14> I could probably fix it but I didn't bother
<14> I have a feeling it's the wrong command that gdm is using for exec
<4> ah.
<14> But I could never find the right session profile for xfce4, it was almost like there wasn't one
<4> oh
<4> phew. this xfce looks all weird.
<17> no amd64 dudes here?
<21> dudes?
<21> highly doubtable
<4> hehe
<22> hi
<4> hi
<6> ubuntu: Hi.
<22> tonyyarussa hi
<18> o O
<18> Anyone know how to change monitor refresh rates in ubuntu?
<23> if i install a minum server and want to run icewm with a i810 card, what do i need to apt-get?
<24> why are there no viruses in linux?
<8> vladuz976, because the penguins eat them
<4> hehe
<24> Madpilot: so are they immunue than?
<24> *then
<6> vladuz976: Mainly because of how the security model is designed, which makes it extremely difficult for an effective virus to be written.
<25> i cant debug with anjuta... :(
<10> gnu2it2: apt-cache search icewm gives you all there are in ubuntu repositories. The minimum I suspect is sudo apt-get install icewm
<20> Can somebody help me with setting up a second NIC? I *think* I'm having routing problems...
<24> tonyyarusso: i am just wondering what makes windows so prone to viruses
<25> when i try to debug the "hello world application, it just hangs...
<6> vladuz976: There are still a few things, better cl***ified as worms than viruses I believe, but they are very limited in the damage they can do to the system. Essentially, worst case scenario is buggering up your home directory.
<18> actually it's easy to write a virus
<18> no one wants to bother
<22> ust wondering about gparted goog unbuntu on the WHOLE drive want to partition with gparted or any other way gparted starts ok does the job unallocate space them goes back to the original partition size ??/
<18> 95% of home desktop systems are still Wintels, ergo you can make a lot more money by making a worm that affects 95% of the population
<8> vladuz976, Windows is too common for it's own good, and has a lousy default security setup
<6> vladuz976: Excellent question. Windows first off is often run with Administrator accounts, which have full priviledges to the system, so anything that happens on that account can bork whatever it wants.
<18> Mad: as in neon signs on it's *** saying "backdoor me!"
<18> I'm glad I run my windows behind a router
<22> tonyyarusso: have a look at my post please
<18> Otherwise no matter what I feel wide open to attack
