<0> can anyone help me? i cannot start my gnome-terminal.
<1> How do I use lame to convert wav to mp3??
<2> do you have lame installed?
<1> yea
<3> AstralJava, k ! will do that now.
<4> error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
<4> I just got that error
<2> did you read --> man lame
<5> I am trying to install the plugin to listen mp3 with " sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.8-mad
<5> " but i get an error saying that there is a dependens libid3tag0 " (>= 0.15.1b) " can somebody help me?
<1> i will :)
<6> how do you use gksudo to open a normal gnome folder and then edit the permissions?
<7> I need a translation from GUI to cli: Does anyone know all of the steps performed by clicking Deactivate and then Activate in the Network Manager?
<8> ghost_: try gksudo nautilus
<1> cheek, i don't have the documentation
<8> ghost_: perhaps specifying which folder you want opened

<8> ghost_: yes, seems to work nicely
<2> http://www.google.com/search?q=man+lame&sourceid=mozilla-search&start=0&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:unofficial
<6> yeah it does
<6> thanks
<9> tonyyarusso, sudo ifup/ifdown ethX ?
<2> michael, did you get that? : http://www.google.com/search?q=man+lame
<7> nickrud: I tried that, but it didn't seem sufficient. Would it lose configuration when taken down?
<9> tonyyarusso, my guess of how the gui's controlling the config was wrong, I guess
<2> Does anyone know of a gnome panel applet that is an alternative for KDE's filebrowser applet (as a menu)
<3> AstralJava, SO ubuntu has no mirrors and stuff ?
<3> AstralJava, All the urls are forever. there.
<10> hi anybodu have instaled mettise the 3d desktop?
<7> nickrud: Hmm. I'm having to do that with the GUI about every 15-20 minutes b/c my ISP drops the connection. It's getting pretty annoying, so I was hoping I could script it and run it with cron.
<11> |lostbyte|: It has, most of them just add the country short in front, like http://us.archive.ubuntu.com
<9> kRaKoN, you have something wrong with your sources. please put them on http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org
<11> |lostbyte|: What do you mean urls are forever there?
<3> AstralJava, k !
<9> tonyyarusso, I've never used that gui tool, so I really don't know
<3> AstralJava, Like you said to uncomment the urls. so every one who is using ubuntu must be using those respositores.
<7> nickrud: All right. Thanks.
<11> |lostbyte|: That is the way for updated packages. You can use just what you have on your cd, but they won't get security updates etc.
<2> what WIFI managers is everyone using? I've tried a few now, but it always seems i have to go into network-admin and change the default interface and choose the network there, before i get a connection. Is anyone else having this problem?
<3> AstralJava, yup !
<3> AstralJava, After i install kubuntu . how do i uninstall this gnome ?
<12> is there any way to reinstall ubuntu with out the cd
<13> nickrud: sorrey about my tone this afternoon a bit abrasive
<12> can any one help me?
<9> xstation, what tone :)
<11> |lostbyte|: I'm not sure exactly. Basically apt-get remove <package> takes off stuff, but I'm not recommending you to do that unless you know what you don't need and what you want to keep. ubuntu-desktop is the default meta-package, same as kubuntu-desktop but with gnome and stuff.
<13> nickrud; I was a bit rude at the end very mellow now
<9> xstation, like I said, I was only 1/4 there, I really didn't notice. But thanks, anyway
<14> hi all
<3> AstralJava, oh !
<3> AstralJava, ok ! want about i want to search for a package ?
<14> i wanna remove gnome-games but it (synaptic) says that it will also remove ubuntu-desktop, what does mean? will it remove the whole ubuntu or what?
<11> |lostbyte|: apt-cache search <pattern>
<12> is there any way to reinstall ubuntu with out the cd
<3> linuxboyfriend, Like AstralJava said. you will need ubuntu-desktop.
<9> linuxboyfriend, no, ubuntu-desktop is just a list of packages to install, removing ubuntu-desktop will not remove anything else
<15> chris: unless ur on a network, no
<11> linuxboyfriend: ubuntu-desktop is a meta-package, it won't matter but it eases up upgrades to newer versions later on.
<13> nickrud; I was just wondering if it might be possible to bring this menu.lst thing to a close as the other option is to use qtpated and put sarge inside ubuntu with kemqu
<16> chris_ unless if you use the windows CD... reboot and type fixmbr
<12> i am but my computer is the only one with ubuntu
<17> hi
<15> chris: r u on the net??
<18> is there any way to remove like, xubuntu-desktop and all the packages it installed, totally? same for ubuntu-desktop, I just want to go back to a server install
<16> if you wanna remove ubuntu
<3> AstralJava, apt-cache search mplayer comes up with mga-vid-source and mozilla-mplayer. but i want mplayer. ?
<12> yes
<9> xstation, I'd do the sarge install again; but if you still get the pivot_root issue, I'd ask on the debian channel, they know more about their own kernels
<14> |lostbyte|, nickrud, Astinus: then how can i remove gnome-games without altering ubuntu-desktop?
<17> does any1 no how to downlaod java on ubuntu 5.10
<11> |lostbyte|: you can try apt-cache show <package> if you know what the package is called.
<13> nickrud: yes I posted a post im the forum and asked they said do a google for pivot_root and the number i got after that think it was 465 or something
<3> apt-cache show mplayer returns nothing. in'st there mplayer for ubuntu ?
<3> AstralJava, ^
<19> !tell matty-92 about java
<20> Davey: uninstalling xserver-xorg should bring alot of things with it
<19> ah well

<9> linuxboyfriend, You are missing the point. installing the ubuntu-desktop metapackage installs a lot of packages, removing ubuntu-desktop metapackage removes only ubuntu-desktop.
<13> Xenguy hello
<12> so..
<19> brb
<3> nickrud, so removing ubuntu-desktop will only remove gnome ?
<19> xstation: hi (at work, in and out a bit)
<11> |lostbyte|: try 'apt-cache show mplayer-386'
<3> !tell |lostbyte| about mplayer
<13> chris; hello are you the guy that posts in debianhelp sometimes same name could be wrong
<18> frank23: oooh, good idea :)
<3> AstralJava, nothing ? :S
<13> Xenguy: time to get mellow
<20> Davey: actually it doesn't work...
<14> nickrud, as AstralJava said that i should not remove it cuse it will help in easy upgrade so i can not remove it, but what should i do with gnome-games (i hate them)
<9> |lostbyte|, removing ubuntu-desktop only removes the package ubuntu-desktop, nothing else.
<19> xstation: you know it - what a week
<12> i dunno
<12> no
<18> frank23: so I just found out
<21> crimsun: you still here?
<9> linuxboyfriend, go ahead and remove them, just reinstall ubuntu-desktop before you upgrade.
<3> nickrud, so what does this package contain ?
<9> |lostbyte|, a list of packages to install.
<22> is it better to use the official ATi drivers or the fglrx ones?
<22> I'm not sure if mine are working correctly (I'm using fglrx)
<3> oh .. k
<12> so how u i reinstall with out the cd
<14> nickrud, what do you think if I apt-get remove gnome-games and then apt-get install ubuntu-desktop?
<3> AstralJava, Dont you have mplayer ?
<13> nickrud: just one thing shuold I choose the sarge grub or stick with ubuntu grub I have that choice
<9> linuxboyfriend, it will reinstall the gnome-games (its part of the list)
<11> linuxboyfriend: ubuntu-desktop depends on gnome-games, so removing gnome-games will remove ubuntu-desktop. When you want to upgrade, reinstall ubuntu-desktop and then remove gnome-games again after upgrade is thru.
<23> gnome-games would be installed again
<21> gnomefreak, you here?
<24> duelboot: ?
<25> anyone using amaroK 1.3.7 + last.fm plugin?
<9> xstation, they're essentially the same: if you look closely, the ubuntu menu.lst says debian :)
<21> hi crimsun, question follows...
<26> anybody know how to spoof MAC addresses?
<3> deizi, Used it on another distro :)
<14> nickrud, AstralJava : :(
<11> |lostbyte|: I do. apt-cache policy mplayer-686 tells me "500 http://archive.ubuntu.com breezy/multiverse Packages"
<25> damn, just can't get tracks submitted
<11> |lostbyte|: So it's in the multiverse repositories.
<13> nickrud; so its ubuntu them, well see what happens
<3> mplayer-686:
<3> Installed: (none)
<3> Candidate: (none)
<3> Version table:
<14> nickrud, AstralJava: thanks by the way
<9> linuxboyfriend, try it, see what happens. Thats the best way to understand it.
<21> crimsun, installed the linux-source for 2.6.10 fine, went to make a file for spcaxx-2006202 (for creative webcam) and got the following error: make[1]: Entering directory `/lib/modules/2.6.12-10-386/build'
<21> make[1]: *** No rule to make target `modules'. Stop.
<3> AstralJava, right now i am downloading kubuntu. is that whats makking it happen.
<3> like usually package installers get locked.
<24> duelboot: you need the headers, not the source.
<27> hi all. is there any way to create dvds with the whole ubuntu repos (main, restrivted, uni and multiverse)?
<24> duelboot: linux-headers-$(uname -r)
<21> crimsun, will do that now
<13> frogzoo; you are here hello
<14> nickrud, the only reason i am afraid is that i am on dialup, if during reinstallation it need some 100MBs packages then i will be mad :(
<9> linuxboyfriend, a second
<21> crimsun, installing now, will let you know
<21> thx
<28> i got that instructure from HOWTO in ubuntu: "3)the default gcc compiler needs to match the one used by the kernel (gcc-3.4 in my case)" so my question is: how do i know what gcc compiler i need to use if i am using kernel 2.6.12-10-386?
<24> duelboot: I'm actually away for a bit
<21> crimsun, okay
<14> nickrud, u know how it is difficult to download even of tens of MBs of data over dialup
<21> crimsun, thx for the help
<29> hello i was wondering does anyone know why Anjuta way be saying "The target executable does not exist for this Project" ? :-\
<9> linuxboyfriend, I know, there's a couple of config options that will tell apt to never clear the cache, so you won't have to redownload.
<30> irad: type 'dmesg | grep gcc'
<14> nickrud, hmm good, will u tell me?
