<0> seriously, he must be striving for that many errors
<1> ohgood: hey want to know how it went?
<2> sure
<1> well, i got the proprietary drivers installed fine, and of course had the installer edit the config file, but when i init 5, i get the same black screen with a mouse for about 5 secs, then it kicks me back to the tty i was at before
<1> ctrl+alt+f7 does nothing....
<0> sounds like a video driver issue
<1> x log shows nothing out of the ordinary.....
<1> nvidia module is running fine....
<1> trying out sax....
<3> spiderworm_work: restart the X server in order to use that nvidia module
<1> GraVeDigg0r: init 3 doesnt restart the x server?
<4> suse 10.1 and novell will have linux leadership.
<1> or does it? cause i did that...
<3> spiderworm_work: no, init 3 enteres the runlevel 3
<5> the_dude: is there a way to see which x sessions or user sessions are running, before i killall?
<3> spiderworm_work: where there is NO X server available at all

<5> killall will also kill my webserver, which i am trying to avoid.
<1> GraVeDigg0r: /etc/init.d/X stop or something?
<3> no
<3> init 5 afterwards
<1> well anyways, i pulled a windows and rebooted, so it died one way or another :)
<2> spiderworm_work: once the module is installed, boot to init3, and setup with sax2
<1> ohgood: it appears that sax is wanting to put me back on the nv driver
<3> indeed
<3> u have to run: sax2 -m 0=nvidia
<1> im getting out and not saving :)
<3> for the first card
<1> oh ok, thanks, sorry
<3> but this is annoying crap imho
<2> spiderworm_work: iirc, that's in the notes too... ;)
<2> spiderworm_work: make sure the module is loaded first ;)
<3> better is to configure X as usual and then edit the one line in the config file manually
<1> ohgood: mebbe i shoulda read them, eh
<1> HELL YES
<1> finally
<1> thank you guys!
<3> D
<3> :D
<3> ur welcome
<6> good moening folks
<7> it's 18:10 here. goodnight might be slightly more appropriate ;)
<6> Richlv_: depends, its 08:11 here
<8> it's 9:11 in the only place that matters
<6> Richlv_: or maybe I should just start saying "hello folks"
<0> http://www.unitedmedia.com/comics/dilbert/
<9> yeah
<9> cute one
<6> haha
<6> thats a good one
<6> I get the next 4 dayts off work, wonder what part of my box I should break this weekend
<0> if anyone is a digg member, digg this http://www.digg.com/linux_unix/KDE_Launches_SpreadKDE
<2> lol
<10> does anybody here has an idea about waht TOR is?
<5> the_dude: did you see my question about killall?
<8> digg is the worst site I've ever seen
<8> they took all the worst parts of fark and slashdot, and combined them into a bastard child
<6> zak: Tor: An anonymous Internet communication system
<6> Tor is a toolset for a wide range of organizations and people that want to improve their safety and security on the Internet. Using Tor can help you anonymize web browsing and publishing, instant messaging, IRC, SSH, and other applications that use the TCP protocol. Tor also provides a platform on which software developers can build new applications with built-in anonymity, safety, and privacy features.
<8> Tor is yet another GNU NIH project
<0> diggs got some problems but it is also barely over a year old
<9> weswh-: no
<9> read the man page
<10> allright , i live i na country where many sites are censored esp ones of international newspaper, can't i enter these censored sites using TOR
<5> the_dude: i understand what killall does. the problem is i don't want it to kill my ssh daemon, or my web server, etc.
<5> i just want to kill user sessions (including x sessions)
<8> you want skill
<8> man skill
<10> SHOLTO canu answer me plz
<11> hey yall, does anyone know if firefox has an extension or something that allows it to use web shortcuts like Konqueror?
<6> zak: I dont think it will allow you to do that, I think its more designed for your security than to circumvent anothers
<8> fiberchunks: eh?
<10> ok but is there any mean to enter censored sites??
<11> frb-work, Konqueror has the ability to type in say: ggi: space in the location bar, and konqueror will convert that into a google image search on the term space
<8> fiberchunks: the google toolbar lets you do that for google
<8> well, it has a dropdown to select the engine
<11> hrm -- where is that?
<8> go to for.wiw.org and click on the getfirefox link

<8> it should go to the toolbar instead
<8> I don't remember the real url
<5> in general is it better to su, or sudo?
<8> su -
<8> sudo and su without the minus will use the User's env, $HOME....
<8> su - will give you a clean root shell
<6> zak: you may want to look into http://www.your-freedom.net and see if that will work for you
<5> how do i list the running processes so i know what to skill?
<8> you can skill a user
<0> zak, i didnt know that tunisia was like that
<5> and that kills all instances of that user, x session or otherwise?
<5> ah, i see skill -STOP <user>.
<12> weswh-: ps ax - for kill
<6> zak: and I guess I was wrong, tor may work for you " neither the Tor website or network are blocked, making Tor (in conjunction with Privoxy) an easily acquired and effective tool for circumvention of the censorship controls."
<12> weswh-: skill can do user, process, or command
<6> sPiN- : yeah tunisia censors "moral issues" type sites from being seen by their citizens
<0> well thats just lovely
<6> but I think China is still the worst for censorship
<5> ok, so is there any way i can check current user status? (who is logged in, what they are running?)
<0> weswh-: w
<12> weswh-: w
<0> too slow old timer ;)
<12> sPiN-: Ha
<5> man, what do i need to read to learn this stuff? is there a more comprehensive manual that manning everything?
<5> individually
<5> i don't know what to man :)
<0> weswh-: try the suse user and admin guides
<12> sPiN-: connection being hammered at moment
<0> they are on your machine
<6> weswh- : http://www.tldp.org/LDP/sag/html/monitoring-users.html
<13> SHOLTO sorry disconnected
<13> i was saying if there is any means to enter censored sites?
<5> interestig. i have an nx session that i just started on my mac, but doing 'w' in my putty connection, still just shows 1 user
<5> same stats as before i did the nx connection
<6> weswh- : could that be cause their isnt anyone else logged into your system ?
<5> i did killall on all of my users. then did w, it said 1 user (i ***umed that was my current ssh connection), then i started an nx connection, and it still says 1 user
<5> though, i guess they are the same user
<6> zak: you may want to look into http://www.your-freedom.net and see if that will work for you
<5> even though i am su - in this putty connection.
<13> ok ill see it and tell u with the result
<13> oops
<13> sory
<13> it says
<13> error 404 page can not be found
<13> i told u
<5> though, skill <user> did destroy my nx session, so that is good.
<13> verything is censored:(
<0> BAH! service call
<6> have fun sPiN-
<0> ill try my best, peace out fellas, have a good one Sholto!
<13> sholto can u give me proxy to try if i can enter some censored sites
<6> zak: and I guess I was wrong, tor may work for you " neither the Tor website or network are blocked, making Tor (in conjunction with Privoxy) an easily acquired and effective tool for circumvention of the censorship controls."
<13> iam just a 20 day linux user
<5> Sholto - a couple of small points of confusion. When i do skill <user>, as that user - it doesn't give me an error, but doesn't terminate the ssh session. in that case is it going to kill all other sessions of that user? or does skill need to be done by a different user (as root, for example)
<13> i dont really know what tor is
<6> _zak: the rest is up to you to figure out and setup, neither I have used
<13> but i heard fro m someone that we ca ndo suchthinhs using tor
<5> furthermore, doing skill <user>, and seeing their x session go away from my nx client - that is doing the same thing as them 'logging out' of Gnome or whatever right? (minus them getting a chance to save their work). i just want to make sure there is nothing hanging out in space wasting resources or potential security threat.
<5> alright, gotta go to the office, i'll figure this out later. thanks guys
<14> has anyone who has migrated from a 2.4 kernel suse to 2.6 kernel suse experienced a 3 time penalty in I/O performance ?
<14> somehow where i saw an average load of 1 before, now i see loads of 3-4
<14> and the number of jobs and the nature of jobs has remained the same
<15> anyone knows if the d-link dwl-g122 wifi works out of the box on suse 10. The wiki says it does, but it would be great to really hear it from somebody before i go ahead and install, wifi is my only connection to the net
<7> what would be your suggestions for gui irc client in suse ?
<7> preferably - precompiled
<7> for a previous win user
<8> Richlv_: if they use KDE, konversation
<8> Richlv_: if they use Gnome, XChat
<16> cu later
<17> Richlv_: Or kopte, nice and easy
<7> web, frb, thanks i'll check konversation
<17> *Kopete
<7> kopete was discarded as notg ood enough ;)
<7> "a stupid messenger" was the description ;)
