<0> umm, how do I delete a user? <1> deluser? <1> userdel? <2> yes? <2> heh <0> yeah <2> :P <0> deluser doesn't work but userdel does. That's weird <2> no it's not <2> deluser doesn't exist <1> isn't there both adduser and useradd? <2> possibly <0> yes, those both work <2> some distros have both (typically they are just symlinks or whatnot, that point to useradd/userdel) <0> I know ubuntu has both <2> personally I think it's retarded :)
<2> cause for confusion and whatnot :P <0> when I log in as root, it says I have new mail <0> where do I access it? <2> congratulations <2> haha <1> mail <2> /var/mail/spooler ? <2> some crap :P <1> just type mail <1> guessing at commands is fun <2> pfft, sissy :P <1> >:-| <1> mail is *harder* than vi /var/spool/mail/root <2> haha <2> ed! <1> seriously <2> bah <1> who would guess that you can delete the message and read the next one with the command "dn"? <2> it's logical? <2> (circa 1969) <2> :P <1> or yuo can append to a file with s +filename <3> are 386 and 586 rpms interchangable? <1> nym: on a 586 they are... <2> haha <3> thanks <2> nym: think of it this way, x86 rpms are [in general] backwards compatible. <2> so on 686, all previous arch versions should work :P <2> speaking of which... <3> cheers Hydrogenum / Daveman <2> :) <4> I'm new to redhat, how to I install packages, I'm used to apt-get <5> what release are you using? cat /etc/redhat-release <4> sarge <4> or the newest one <5> er, release of Red Hat. sarge is a debian release. Red Hat is a company. They make releases of different families of distributions. <1> rofl <6> where is the humor? <1> you joined ;) <1> well, that and the response to "cat /etc/redhat-release"? was "sarge" <1> it's always fun when newbs think they can trick us :) <6> HAHAHAHA <6> I had a special invite to come in here <1> well, you're a "special" person <6> Hydrogenum: where do I know you from? fedora? <5> and this is a "special" place. <6> an ***ociate of mine described it as such: i'ts the landing place of lost souls, looking for a proper destination. It's like pergator <5> +y <6> yup +y <6> copy and paste had a small snack <7> greetings <7> anyone here have experience using large hard drives in a USB enclosure under linux? <5> sgniteerg <5> jshriver: define 'large'. <7> 200gig <5> sure. <7> here is my problem <7> http://channels.debian.net/paste/1782. <7> for the dmesg info <6> f13: are we nice in here?
<7> any help is appreciated.. tried a couple channels.. but hitting a wall...some pointers though <7> not sure if it's the driver, or if my enclosure is messing up.. <1> donavan: no <5> donavan: mostly. <1> donavan: we tell them to go to #rhel, to #fedora, or to upgrade and then go away <7> I noticed it's trying to use 512byte sectors.. and it needs to be 2k sectors for drives a little under 256gigs <7> lol <5> jshriver: so here is the fun questions. What release of Red Hat software are you using, what kernel, etc... <7> running Debian.. 2.6.15.1 kernel... my question is more kernel related so should apply to any distro.. linux is linux <6> s/is/are/ <6> but it's not <5> jshriver: yes and no. <7> hrm <1> donavan: the best part is when we get people in here that aren't even using redhat... <7> thought the only diff was how things where laid out and the package manager <5> jshriver: kernel is a kernel until a vendor adds patches, integrates userland, etc, etc, etc.... <7> sorry Hydrogenum I used RH for 5 years if it helps :) <7> well using vanilla source from kernel.org <6> Hydrogenum: there are distros other than redhat? <7> I dont use the debian kernels <5> jshriver: if only. Even the compiler used can durasticly change the way a kernel works, and the problems ***ociated. <1> donavan: yeah, but they all **** <6> jshriver: that sounds like a #gentoo question, back up the hall <1> donavan: but check out #windows and #osx for some other distros ;) <7> hrm.. :( <7> the best thing I've come across.. is that I might need to change lilo.conf and p*** it some kind of magical values for SCSI.. but no idea what they are or what to change <7> so the kernel can give the right vals to the SCSI modules <7> the large disk howto seems kinda dated, and mostly for old systems trying to get 8+gig on IDE working <5> jshriver: well the fun thing is, I've plugged 200+ gig drives into Red Hat releases progressing from RHL9 through FC4, every single one has seen the drive just fine. <6> f13: you have as of yet to make my usb2.0 enclosure operate at high speed though... <7> hrm.. maybe it's just my enclosure then.. it's supposed to support up to 400gigs though, and haven't had any problems with it w/ other HD's.. but Ive never tried one this big before in USB <6> (on a RH/FC kernel) <5> donavan: -ENOTMYJOB <6> LMAO <6> other comments in the other common channel <7> guess the best question to ask is... what parameters do I need to give lilo to p*** to the kernel so it handles 200gig SCSI emulated USB drives :) <6> something is horked up in the RH usb subsystem anyway <5> jshriver: as I said, with RH based distros, no params needed. The system just does the right thing. <7> wonder how it does it then... <5> jshriver: so, I can't really help you because it shouldn't be broken if you were using a RH based distro. <1> it's automagic <7> can you check your lilo.conf to see if there is any "append sda blah blah" <1> dd141218 <1> ermm, never mind that p***word... :-| <6> lilo.conf was depracated back in the 90's <7> does REdhat do recursive package handling? The big reason I had switched after using RH for 5 years, I was tired of having to chase down a dozen dependency's in rpm.... went to debian mostly beacuse of the apt tools and telling it "I want package X" and it was smart enough to get X and all deps.. and all deps of deps for me... <7> grub ? <5> jshriver: rpm handles it just as well as dpkg. <8> i know jshriver that. :) <5> jshriver: those are the comparable entities. <7> *bangs head into wall* lol <7> ok <5> jshriver: however, Red Hat based distros do have higher level tools, such as yum, that compare to things such as apt-get <8> any one know where to get rh9 up2date packages. the latest i mean all of them <5> jshriver: in fact, rpm can be said to be even more advanced than dpkg, since dpkg doesn't even bother checking deps, nor does it handle multi-arch. <5> jaMaLz: http://download.fedoralegacy.org <8> ftp links ? <5> ftp is a dead protocol. <7> f12: dpkg checks all dependencies recursively.. so if you have 5 levels deep of deps for deps... it installs them all.. <5> jaMaLz: we offer http and rsync, both much more suited for many many small files. <7> ftp is still nice... no encryption overhead like scp... but wouldnt want to use ftp for private info over the net though <5> jshriver: dpkg does not. apt however does. <8> f13: i wanna make my browser work <5> jaMaLz: thats nice, what the heck do you mean by that. <7> f13, I stand corrected.... I dont use dpkg that much just apt... <5> jshriver: exactly. Higher levels of tools like yum do the same thing. check deps, retrieve them from configured repositories, and installs them. <7> I'll have to check out fedora then, RH is a nice distro that was my only beef with it.. but that was hrm 2-3 years ago maybe 4 <5> jshriver: and yum / rpm supports multi-arch. x86_64 kernel, x86_64 AND 32bit packages. <5> Debian and tools, not so much. <7> nice <7> brb <8> i'm searching for file named mx <5> mx?
