<vluther> theshadow: with SQL
<smore> theshadow: if you frequently drop sets of tables, you might put them in the same database. you might also think about reorganizing it so that's not necessary, too
<\phil\work\> mmm... tactical nuclear missile
<Gooth> there are no logs in /usr/local/mysql, quite odd
<smore> Gooth: check permissions/ownership of that directory
<smore> Gooth: also, there might be something in the system logs about why it was unable to create them
<\phil\work\> what if it couldnt create the system logs?
<Gooth> drwxr-xr-x 19 root wheel 646 Mar 22 09:27 mysql-standard-5.0.19-osx10.4-powerpc/ what am i locking for here?
<[RainMkr]> Gooth: $data_dir/data
<[RainMkr]> sorry, $base_dir/data
<[RainMkr]> or $data_dir/
<Gooth> drwxr-x--- 8 mysql wheel
<Gooth> on the datafolder
<smore> Gooth: check syslog to be sure
<I3ooI3oo> wow 1 hour later my first table ... awww
<Gooth> the system.log just lists the command issued, no errormessages
<Gooth> is there a way to purge the system from mysql and reinstall it?
<Hory> i have a database with tables of various charsets; if i export it and import it back, most of them don't show properly. is there a way to export it in binary or someway that i can import it back without having charset issues?
<dsch04> Hi, is it OK to ask about mysql cluster in this channel?
<dsch04> More importantly, any clustering gurus here? :)
<inviso_> dsch04: Yes, it's ok to ask
<dsch04> Ok, the clustering question is:
<dsch04> If I want to change the structure of a table in a two-node cluster (MySQL 5.0.18) e.g. adding an additional three fields, what's the "right" way to implement that change across both nodes?
<sjrussel> NDB cluster?
<I3ooI3oo> why did my sql console switch to `>
<talaok> hi how can i give permission to ip to connect to mysql ?
<I3ooI3oo> insted of ->
<I3ooI3oo> add the user in the user table with the ip of the host you want
<I3ooI3oo> the flush permissions
<I3ooI3oo> *then
<dsch04> Yes, NDB Cluster.
<talaok> any one can help me plz :s
<\phil\work\> I3ooI3oo: brobably because it is waiting for a quote completion
<I3ooI3oo> ok i got it
<\phil\work\> "->" i think is line completion (waiting for ;)
<I3ooI3oo> thanks
<I3ooI3oo> yeah

<talaok> I3ooI3oo no i get this msg
<talaok> host 192.1xxx.xx.x.xx is not allowed to connect to mysql server
<talaok> host 192.1xxx.xx.x.xx is not allowed to connect to this mysql server
<will> MySQL does not say xxx.xx.xx.x.x.x
<will> Since that isn't an IP number.
<\phil\work\> looks like hes editing his ip
<\phil\work\> so we dont see it
<will> Are you scared we're going to hack your internal IP?
<I3ooI3oo> like we can get to 192. anything

<I3ooI3oo> ^ i read that page and solved that proble today talaok
<kibab_> Quick question. Are null's always last in sort order?
<kibab_> ... when ordering by asc.
<will> Try it
<\phil\work\> proble.. thats a miniature probe, right?
<will> Using NULLs are a bad thing generally.
<\phil\work\> especially gr***y NULLs
<kibab_> will: I tried it and they show up last... but I wanted to make sure it wasn't coincidence and find out if there were any other rules that I needed to be aware of.
<will> Nope
<\phil\work\> kibab_: it might just be implementation dependent
<kibab_> \phil\work\: hmm... I was hoping there was something consistent...
<\phil\work\> check the standard to be sure
<\phil\work\> and then check whatever implementation you are using if it follows the standard
<\phil\work\> which it probably doesnt
<\phil\work\> then check the version dependent changelog
<\phil\work\> and make sure its not a full moon out
<\phil\work\> i'm just bitter :p
<[RainMkr]> There is no standard on NULL sorting.
<kibab_> \phil\work\: hehe... I couldn't find anything... but if there isn't a standard... that would make sense.
<will> [RainMkr], Well then we should make one. NULLs should be ordered every other row, because it COULD belong there.
<[RainMkr]> will: *exactly*
<\phil\work\> because it COULD belong there.
<will> You are a weird one.
<\phil\work\> At least then I am ordinate.
<\phil\work\> And not NULL.
<\phil\work\> or is that NOT NULL
<\phil\work\> peace and chicken grease
<dormando> ah crap... the 5.1 docs page for mysqlslap is like half written :P
<dormando> that's why I'm so confused
<jpofy> Hi all. I'm wondering, is there a way to make a field act like a boolean, making it possible to negate back and forth. Example SET done=!done. If they were booleans, they would change from true to false, but also from false to true.. Is there any way to do something like this in mysql?
<ndee> hello there, my current dedicated server has 512MB RAM and is an athlon xp 2400+. The sites that are on this server grew, and now, the server crashes about once a week, because freebsd 5.3(that is a known bug) crashes when there are too many users connected. Now my plan is to get a second dedicated server(2.8GHz Pentium 4, 2GB RAM) and let apache run on the new server, and mysql on the old one. Do you guys think I would notice a big performance
<polvi> smore: archivist: here is some example runtimes from the conversation we were having earlier: http://pastebin.com/643080
<smore> nice timing, just got back
<polvi> sweet ;)
<smore> what version of mysql?
<polvi> 4.1
<archivist> first run builds the cache
<smore> foreign keys involved?
<polvi> smore: not directly. i.e. i am not enforcing them with mysql
<CosmicHippo> is there anything I have to do to enable innodb support other than uncomment the relevant lines in my.cnf and restart mysqld? because this program with which I'm trying to use mysql in tandem is still trying to tell me that the mysql-with-innodb dependency isn't met even after that
<polvi> archivist: | query_cache_size | 0 |
<polvi> archivist: but yes, i could be the key cache
<archivist> disk and operating system as well
<CosmicHippo> (this being on a slackware 10.2 relatively fresh installation, with mysql 5.0something)
<polvi> archivist: sure
<smore> wait.. that's just innodb anyways.. you said myisam, right?
<polvi> myisam, yep
<smore> set your pager to "less" ("pager less;") and then select * from users_tmp;
<archivist> polvi ive seen wider variation due to empty cache/filled cache so results dont seem that abnormal
<smore> then quit less and run it again
<smore> check the times from that..
<smore> that should tell you if the time is spent in the read or the write operation
