<0> can we use an integral transform to solve this infinite sum problem ? <0> the pony transform for instance :P <1> how to calculate the inverse function of E(u), the elliptic integral of the second kind? <2> hi.. What is the definition od median if we only consider integer values.. I mean, we cannot choose a value between 2 elements, but only one of them <3> It's not my responsibility to notify each student <3> when they aren't fulfilling the requirements. <-- <3> Do you agree? <4> It's the first integer that's above .5 in the cdf <2> thx :) <3> Is it a teacher's responsibility to inform students if they are not fulfilling the requirements? <5> Depends what's going on, I suppose. <3> They do daily ***ignments grade on number of problems completed and the student asks how they are doing in the course at midterms and finals. <5> The student is doing poorly, I ***ume. <3> No, the teacher did not specify if one page of problems is due each day or if one page of problems per section is due each day (max 2 sections) <3> But most of the other students did the correct number, say 95% of them. <3> So the student gets a F on ***ignments, but A's on everything else, should the student get a B?
<3> or a B? <5> A B or a B? <5> I'd say that something should have been mentioned at least at the midterm. <3> You received a high A on the midterm. When I tabulated the response papers, however, I found many to be half a page. <-- meaning the ***ignments grade was not incorporated. <3> 1. Why did you not issue a midterm grade? <3> 2. When I came to your office after not receiving a midterm grade I did <3> not get correct feedback. You told me I was doing good and my grade was <3> an A. Why did you tell me this if it was not true? <5> That sounds misleading. <3> Would you like to look at the whole argument? <5> Er, continue. <3> I'm going to get the guy fired if I can. <3> I just received a copy of the letter you wrote to Joseph Kronick, and <3> to say the least, I am not happy. I planned to give you the benefit of <3> the doubt and give you the additional points you needed, but to be <3> honest, I'm not willing to do that now, primarily because a number of <3> your statements to him simply weren't true. For example: <5> Are you the student, the teacher, or a third party here? <3> student <5> Okay, continue. <3> I wrote a letter to an administrator when he wrote me back with a "I'll give you the grade if you kiss my ***" letter. <5> What were the "simply not true" statements? <3> http://tshake.com/letter1.txt <5> Reading. <3> I eventually did find the requiements he had on his website. <5> I like the all caps. It's a nice touch. <5> So the requirements were on the website? <3> What do you mean? <3> Yes <3> What do you mean about the caps? <5> It looked like he was shouting at you. <3> That is the way he typed it. <3> Most of the letters I received from him were in caps. <5> I like to point out netetiquette websites to people like that. <3> My goal is to get him fired and get an A in the course. <3> I graduated one course away from latin honors. <6> ai coder, i doubt steve gives a **** <6> about your problems <6> he cant do anything to help you anyways <3> yes he can, why do you say otherwise? <5> I can speak for myself. I'm not sure how I could help though. <3> Well I'm not here for sympathy, I'm trying to clarify my argument I'll present on Monday. <3> So, you get entertainment value in exchange for your comments. <5> I'm not sure what to say though. <7> Other students did it right? <3> your honest opinion, that is all <3> delta: yep <7> why? <3> delta: why what? <5> Well, if the requirements were on the webpage, then it's your responsibility. However, if you were told that your grade was fine and that nothing was wrong, that is misleading. <7> If I understand correclly, they did it right and not you, AI_coder, yes? <3> yes <3> delta: is it a close argument or would a reasonable person (you) see that since i was the exception i am at fault? <7> I'm sorry but if the majority of students "answered" correctly and not you, then you made a mistake somewhere. <8> what is mean value? <8> if Im gonna do a function that calculates mean value, what is thaT? <5> woobster: There are several types of mean. <5> Algebraic, geometric, etc. <8> give me an example for an algebraic one <5> I meant arithmetic mean, sorry. <5> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mean
<8> ok <3> ok, a more central point, are teachers responsible for letting students know if they're not meeting requirements? <5> If asked, yes. <3> if they're not letting students know, particularly if they ask, then are they really teaching anything? <5> Teaching yes, fulfilling their responsibility, no. <5> If one of my students asks me how they are doing, I am obligated to find out and give an honest answer. <5> If there's a problem, it's my job to let them know at that point. <7> AI_coder, sorry, I'm not native english. What does mean exactly 'meet requirements'? <3> If you were asked to arbitrate the matter |Steve| would you say that "most students did it and you didn't, so you are wrong" is more important than "i asked and did not get accurate feedback"? Or are the close enough to dispute at a higher level? <5> Fulfilling his obligations, delta. <5> I'd say that giving inaccurate feedback when asked directly is very bad. <5> Clearly there was a misunderstanding of the requirements. <3> Well I'll take that as a they're close, so I'll go ahead with my argument full swing, thank you |Steve| . <5> I would, yes. <5> Of course, as a graduate student, when a question like this comes up, I get to punt and say, "talk to the professor." <7> So, when students don't fulfill their obligations, they can doubt about the responsibility of teachers in US? <9> there are teachers inthe US? <5> In my opinion, the teacher didn't fulfill his obligation to inform AI_coder that he wasn't fulfilling his, when asked. <9> :) <7> |Steve|, how other students did it right then? <5> I don't think he was disputing that. <5> Just that when asked, he was misinformed. <7> Depending when he asked. <3> 1. Why did you not issue a midterm grade? <3> 2. When I came to your office after not receiving a midterm grade I did <3> not get correct feedback. You told me I was doing good and my grade was <3> an A. Why did you tell me this if it was not true? <3> I returned the midterm exams after I graded them and then picked them up <3> at the end of cl***. I then told students that they could come and see <3> me if they had questions concerning their grade. Lots of students came <3> to see me. To answer your question, you were doing well at that point. <3> You received a high A on the midterm. When I tabulated the response <3> papers, however, I found many to be half a page. <3> But I was not meeting the requirements response papers the entire course. <3> Meaning given proper feedback I could have received an A. <3> Wow, that just clarified my argument tremendously. Many Thanks for Listening! <9> ? <9> what was that? <3> |Steve|: do you see what I see? <8> thats a song <8> or something <3> http://tshake.com/letter2.txt is the language too harsh? <3> i'm softening it a little, a less "you ***hole" to more of these are the facts <10> maybe not put your value judgement, "jand you misled me negligently or intentionally"ust provide the facts <10> Just provide the facts <10> also "You told me I was doing good.." better grammar to have "...doing well.." <10> AI_coder : just put the facts as you know them, not your conclusions or questions of the instructors motive <10> AI_coder : let the motives be figured out by the review board, ***uming there is one in your school <3> _rd_ yeah, i have no need to argue with that guy <3> My only reason to send him an email at this point is to make him slip up and say something stupid. <10> AI_coder : also seek ***istance from you student rep in getting a worthy response <3> But thank you for the advice, I need to not vent to him. <10> AI_coder : I recom avoiding any unecessary drama that would weaken your case <10> AI_coder <3> Exactly, as his earlier letters used all caps as though he were shouting, which is very unprofessional. <10> if you feel stongly about this, then the instructor prob has a past Hx of doing this to others <11> lol drama <10> AI_coder if you do some research amoungst fellow students you can likely find others been mistreated <3> _rd_: the guy is unusual <3> he shared with us his family tends to commit suicide and have mental disorders <3> his sister killed herself during the semester <10> AI_coder so what you do is document each incident with 1) time 2) incident 3) witnesses <3> he write sick poems describing babies as "white fists of flesh." <10> AI_coder this is really off topic and best ot move to #not-math <3> Curiously he is well known among students for being an easy grader. <3> _rd_: I apologize, I felt it was relevant at first because the central issue is his statement "t's not my responsibility to notify each student when they aren't fulfilling the requirements." <3> But isn't that what teaching is? <3> and math we all know is primarily about teaching and learning :D <10> AI_coder sonds like he is finding an easy way out, I suggest you study the course handbook <10> AI_coder as it would have the details of his obligations to you as a student <10> This is where you will be saved. if he doesn't fullfill the requirements set out in the course handbook, then you have a firm case <3> _rd_: excellent suggestion <12> universities in the US are really about coddling students <12> in .be, there's one exam at the end of the semester. that's all that counts. whether you attend cl***, go to the exercise sessions and all that doesn't mean anything.
