<0> I'm having a problem with device permissions. I (regetably) changed my user 'mythtv' group from 'mythtv' to 'video'. Now, mplayer will not work because the audio device permissions are not correct for group 'video' (it does work as root). Do I need to add group 'video' to something? <1> running memtest86 on my pc that's a 1gb athlon w 2x 128MB PC100 memory sticks in it, when it's running, i see some errors appearing: Test 6 - Moving Inversions ( p***=0, memory address 000e or 000f xxxxxxxx, x = a hex number; 233.4MB - 244.6MB, good: 00020000, bad: 00000000, error bit: 00020000, count=1) .. is that a bad sign? <2> i need some advices on setting up an ldap infrastructure, so far i have samba setup with ldap, and im trying to work out which way is best to setup courier and postfix (ie do i use the ldap modules or just use pam to ldap for authentication) <3> hi everyone, I am trying to install subversion on redhat9 but getting failed dependencies, any ideas how to fix that in an easy way, or do I have to download each indificual rpm? <4> oh my god, the new german chancellor is a female george w. bush in disguise. <4> *shiver* <4> this is really bad. <5> and off topic... <4> awol: oh, fear! of course, that's terribly disturbing given that nobody has said a single thing for half an hour. <5> 14 mins according to my client... <4> heh <5> xp_: try using something like apt-get for redhat9 or yum... or get a newer distro... <6> has any one used the module ma600-sir ? <6> has any one used the module ma600-sir ? I canot load it <7> Agiofws: as root: modinfo ma600-sir; uname -r see if versions match and check any options ?
<8> hello <8> when you have a directory structure with 4 different filetypes, (*.doc, *.rtf, ...) can you just "mv -R /structure/*.rtf /new_place" and /new_place will contain the old directory structure, with only the *.rtf in it? <8> or how could i go about this task? <9> What's '-R' ? <8> non existent <8> bummer <9> ah. Then, no. <10> phydoxx: you can't do that becuse you're actually trying to copy the directories, not move them <9> But you can copy recursively. <9> You can also use find or tar to do this. <8> copy the directories but move the certain filetypes, yes <8> i tried tar, but when i ommit the root directory it says it wasnt able to find *.rtf <10> uh, you normally can't use wildcards for tar; your shell is supposed to handle that <9> Though tar does claim to do globbing for files to exclude (c.f. --exclude) <8> yes, but it would make more sense to --include <10> tar cf blah.tar some/path/*.rtf <8> Triskelios, exactly that is not working <4> there needs to be at least one *.rtf file in the path you're specifying... <8> tar: /data/*.txt: Cannot stat: No such file or directory <4> just touch dummy.rtf or so before copying? <8> intrr, and then it will move on? <4> phydoxx: I guess, yes. <8> hm. i could create a fake one <8> lets see if we can trick the bum :-p <4> the same problem occurs with other commands too. <10> phydoxx: um, are you using quotes or something in the command? tar should NOT see the '*' <8> nope, then its only packing the created fake file and nothing else <8> cause the other subdirs dont contain *.rtf, they are deeper in the structure <8> but i need the entire directory structure <8> hmph <4> best bet is probably to use find. <9> phydoxx: tar -cf - `find /data -type f -name \*rtf` <10> find <dir> -name '*.rtf' -exec tar cf blah.tar {} + <4> and then p***ing its results to cp or tar. <10> Budd: p***ing filenames from stdin works? <9> Is the concatenation of multiple tarfiles a valid tarfile? <11> what's the diff between imap and pop3? <9> Triskelios: My command doesn't p*** them from stdin; it adds them to tar's command line. <10> Budd: oh, I see. you're just dumping to stdout. that's not safe for filenames with spaces etc., though <9> Triskelios: I like to live dangerously. You're right, though. <8> Budd, your version is scrolling a lot of cryptic things to the screen <10> it's a tarball =x <8> Triskelios, your version works as it looks like. thanks :D <10> *flag <12> So much for Ubuntu being human-friendly! <8> Triskelios, and when i place "--remove-files" after the "tar -cf" it will delete all TARed files after success? <12> i just showed my dad it and tried to demonstrate how easy it is to use... everything messed up <12> floppy disk wouldnt mount, he didnt understand why you had to mount stuff first and unmount after, his digital camera wouldnt show up as a disk <10> phydoxx: yes, but don't do that until you've tested the tarball first =x <12> is there anything that does it all for you?? <10> silverblade: it works reasonably well in my experience <12> Ubuntu? <8> Triskelios, *grin* yes i had 2 tests and your solution works like a charm :D <8> and very fast at that, too <10> all right, then <12> why is it the eject button doesnt do anything when you've got a cdrom mounted? i mean when you want to unmount and eject it <10> silverblade: because you don't have a program that handles the eject events installed. unfortunately I don't think any distro ships with one currently <12> oh but they exist? <10> yes, there was a specific thing back in the day, but it should actually be possible to configure ivman to do it <10> heh, actually, ivman does it by default
<10> perhaps you want to compare the default with ubuntu's config <8> on usage of tar with subdirectories, its extracting later /base/1/2/file.txt can i create the archive so /base/1 is not included in the path when i extract later? <12> hmm <10> phydoxx: you can use --exclude for that, I guess <8> mh <13> Can anyone help me with CVS? I keep trying to download some sources off of the Source Forge and it keeps saying something about too many links. <14> hey all <13> Hello demone. <14> having issues getting my incoming email working now that my family switched to bellsouth <14> anyone know what has to be done for incoming mail and bellsouth ? <15> what's the difference between the p***word field in a /etc/shadow entry being "*" or "!"? <15> demone: check out bellsouth's website? <14> litage... you seem to be lacking the dilemma <14> i have used my own mail account on my server for 3 years on comcast <14> going to bellsouth to ask them "how do i byp*** your stupidity" wont work <15> ah, hahah <14> what the hell kind of isp filters INBOUND traffic on pt 25? (aside from bellsouth and cox apparently) <15> demone: more than 1 canadian isp does it, too. they don't like you running your own mail server <14> bellsouth is doing it to "protect" people from vulnerabilities in smp <14> smtp <16> sox: Unable to reset OSS driver. Possibly accessing an invalid file/device <16> anyone knows a hint how to continue on resolving some sound problems? <7> shevegen: man aoss if you have man aoss then: aoss play some .wav you have <16> chip is this btw: soundcore 7392 1 snd <16> . dont have aoss hmm. i unmuted everything in alsamixer btw <16> and mplayer says: "[AO OSS] Can't set audio device /dev/dsp to s16le output, trying s16le." <16> am googling too :) to no avail so far <7> shevegen: as root: alsamixer -V all unmute and set volumes then as root: alsactl store and report any errors <16> alsamixer -V <16> alsamixer: option requires an argument -- V <16> AlsaMixer v1.0.9a <7> shevegen: -V all <16> oh sorry <7> hehe <16> no errors reported <7> shevegen: good; cat /proc/asound/cards <16> its a cheap one :) integrated <16> 0 [SI7012 ]: ICH - SiS SI7012 <16> SiS SI7012 with CMI9761 at 0xdc00, irq 185 <7> shevegen: ok, laptop? <13> I have returned. So... Can anyone help me with this CVS problem? When I use the program, it complains about too many links. <16> no, a very cheap desktop AMD machine. sound works with other LiveCDs btw, <7> shevegen: ok, good, new linux install or new kernel? <16> oh <16> i am using a self compiled kernel... hmm <16> 2.6.15.1, maybe that has something to do with sound problems <7> shevegen: ok, which distro, debian? <16> foresight linux, its a distro based on gnome <7> shevegen: yea, info about alsa on new kernel next <16> (by the way, i managed to have sound on it in the past, maybe it really has something to do with me compiling and using another kernel...) :) <7> shevegen: ok, foresight got a pkg mgr you can upgrade your alsa pkgs with while new kernel is booted? <16> name is mgr? <7> shevegen: yea, more new kernel alsa info to follow... <16> ok, thanks. i think i will read a little bit more about it next, i feel rather newbieshly about it :) <7> shevegen: ok, if no pkg mgr upgrade then d/l alsa drivers, librarys, and utilitys, compile and install them with new kernel running <16> okies, thanks <7> shevegen: have fun, ask in #alsa for help if needed <16> since when have you been using linux by the way? am curious :) <16> (i since about ~ 19 months) <7> shevegen: 6 years but new to #alsa about 4 months <16> nice <13> Dang, that's good. <9> shevegen, sox may be expecting /dev/dsp, which may not exist on your system (or may not have a backing device) <9> I've been known to 'ls > /dev/dsp' to see if it's live (hint: turn down your speakers first). <9> If your alsa is woking, 'mplayer -ao alsa ...' will tell it to use the ALSA interface rather than the (older) OSS. <16> yeah now its another error... "alsa-space: xrun of at least 0.011 msecs. resetting stream" :) <16> with -ao alsa <9> ew. <9> technically speaking. <9> umm..looking above - does it really say IRQ 185? <16> yeah....
