<0> I'm having what seems to be a strange problem. I have a PC104 x86 computer. When I run a 2.4.x kernel the system boots, gives me a login, lets me login just fine. When I use a 2.6.x kernel they system boots, gives me a login, lets me enter a username, but not a p***word, it just outputs "login[305]: invalid p***word for `root' on `tts/1'" and gives me the prompt again. <1> has anyone used http://www.black-market-babies.com/ before? <2> I'm dumfounded .. but how to I copy the contents of one directory to another via cli? I've been trying cp -r /mnt/gentoo/boot-tmp /mnt/gentoo/boot . but it just sticks boot-tmp in side /boot .. <3> add -R also <3> RAID bus controller: Silicon Image, Inc. SiI 3114 [SATALink/SATARaid] Serial ATA Controller (rev 02) <- is that hardware raid? <4> JustinS: and you want the contents of boot-tmp/ in boot/ ? <2> Yeah .. it's just a simple copy because I had to change the paritions a little .. <2> and boot is mounted on it's own partition now .. <4> try boot-tmp/* and boot/ <2> Doesn't like that one either .. just says cp: omitting directory 'boot-tmp/boot' .. seems so simple .. lol <4> so what exactly do you want to copy where? <2> n'kay .. all better .. I just told it .. /mnt/gentoo/boot-tmp /mnt/gentoo .. and it stuck it over the old one .. <2> ur . I mean cp -R /mnt/gentoo/boot-tmp/boot /mnt/gentoo .. and it made a new /mnt/gentoo/boot with all the goodies in it .. <5> How would you guys feel about a installgentoo.mpeg? Where I install gentoo from scratch and record everything and let people watch that before they install or on another machine? <2> Think the new kids on the block would appreciate that .. gonna be cli or using the new gui install?
<5> I didn't know there was a new gui install, but it would probably be for both, the cli to make people aware of what is going on behind the scene and gui for people that want it to work. <6> hi all..im having some problems. my disks keep falling out after a while i get "I/O error" .. i mean like dissapare. i need to power off. then,, not even bios finds then.. if i have my pc off for 2-3 min,, and power up again they come back. what might be wrong? im suspecting the mobo ide controller <7> AI_coder: it's not necessary. there already already lots of hotows with descriptions and images, step by step <5> That or a bad power connection. <6> why should all 3 of my disk be wreckt <7> so a video wouldnt really add anything <5> spike: Yeah, but with an mpeg it's sort of like having someone sitting beside you talking with you. <2> AI_coder: The gui version isn't my bag (although I'm a total gui head once I'm booted) .. I downloaded it to play with it, and ended up opting for the cli install after all .. more control I think .. <7> AI_coder: I dont see what it adds <5> spike: Basically it's just a different way of conveying the same message. <5> Have you ever read how to do something and then had someone show you how to do something? <5> It's quite different. <7> honestly? no, I havent <5> No? <7> when I learnt there was only man around <2> AI_coder: you could make it capable of running as a VCD and they could toss it in their home dvd player and watch along .. <5> JustinS: That is what I was thinking :D <2> great mind .. <7> this is not gardening... <2> I'm off to toss the storage drives in my server (that's the box I was dinking with the boot directory on) .. thanks for the help kasc .. <5> Yeah, programming is complicated, but using a computer shouldn't be. <5> Anything to make the adoption of linux easier is a step forward in my mind. <7> why dont you go there, install everything for them, and make their room up since u're at it <7> anything to make another dull user stay dull is a step backward <8> i got a file with 1 number on each line, how can i make the sum of all the numbers in it for ex using bc and w/o adding a +\ at the end of each line ? <5> Not exactly, a user that has someone taking him by the hand telling them how and more importantly why is giving them the foundation for how to solve their own problems, hence an educated user. <5> Throwing a manual at them and saying read is for programmers, showing someone kindly how to *use* something and how to properly report bugs is for end users. <7> there's something in between, the right path: throw a man and them and teach them to read <8> u can tell them once and also tell them where they can find more info about your solution, or where they can read more about the whatever they asked <7> teached how to be independent is the key <5> spike: Could you clarify what you mean by, "throw a man and them and teach them to read", I am really trying to derive meaning from it. <7> teach a man he can get food from you and you'll have to babysit it all the time. tell a man how to get his own food, and it'll evolve and you'll have time to teach another man <5> spike: Absolutely. <5> spike: So is your goal to recruit programmers or to recruit users? <5> It is possible your users are programmers however. <8> but that man needs to eat some from u before he can go ahead and kill for himself :)) <8> anyway .. it doesn`t seem that i get any help w/ my probl so :P c ya ppl <7> I do not make differences, programmers or users... they are all the same, human beings with a brain, capable to think most of the times <7> their diverse goal and preparation isnt an excuse <7> they are on the same level, as the grater preparation of the programmer takes him to greater challenges <7> so the users and the programmers have the same ration skills/difficulty_of_the_problem <7> AI_coder: see my point? <7> thinking a user is different than a programmer is wrong... is one of those big wrong ***umptions <7> one mistake at the base like that and everything you create on that will come out wrong <5> No, you're wrong about that. A programmer cares about how something works, a user doesn't care and doesn't need to know how something works, nor do they feel that they should learn. Frankly why should a user learn how his computer works if his goal is to write documents, make them print and email them to someone while do some graphic design with gimp and playing the latest video games while changing his screensaver to impress his frien <9> geee <9> users = programmers? oh my <9> spike: or you have great users on your country or bad programmers <7> you keep not understanding the truth behind that <9> altough they're people <7> you're comparing them rather than compariting them with their tasks <9> they have different approaches when sitting in front a pc <7> approaches? tasks. just tasks. <7> and again, really, there's a fundamental problem with the whole thing: we're trying to solve a social problem technically, and that aint gonna happen, *ever* <10> does anyone know if gftp can chmod recursively? <11> did you try it? <10> i would if i saw a recursive option <10> or is there another ftp client that does/ <12> many of the normal file managers can do ftp as well. such as kde and gnomes file manager. I belive <12> but not sure about special features like that. :( <12> i bet mc could do it.
<10> ah iglooftp does it <10> thx <13> Hello once again, everyone. <13> I just installed a WinTV PCI capture card, but my computer won't go past loading the modules. I do have other PCI cards, and have taken out one that uses the same IRQ as the offending card, but that didn't work. Btw, I'm using Ark Linux with the 2.6.16-0.rc6-1ark kernel. <12> i would truy some differnet live cd's and see if they work good with the card. <12> as a first test.. also google for the specific card and see if any known issues exist. <13> Well, currently I'm using Knoppix. <12> There is a MythTVKnoppix variant. :P <13> Yeah, I think I have that some where around here. I tried that, but I didn't know what to do, exactly, on the options screen. <13> Hello dumbhack. <14> Hello <14> Is it possible to reverse an SSH connection? (have a SSH server connect to a listening SSH client) <14> I figured out my SSH question <15> Hello I need help uninstalling mysql completely then reinstalling latest version.. I dont mind losing my database <12> hmm.. time to check the docs for the package manager for your distro it seems Aphixe2x <15> Dr_Willis, well well, I am on a ssh connection. so I dont have access too much it seems? <12> you can forward X programs over ssh :P <12> ***uming you are on a machine that is runnoing a x server now that could display them <15> I had vnc once working but not atm <12> vnc is another way :P if you need a gui for your package management needs. <15> Dr_Willis, check this out I found maybe the package.. http://pastebin.com/743841 <15> Dr_Willis, I got my vnc to work <15> Dr_Willis, I'm in gnome <16> how can i make my linux box function as a router? <16> ***uming it has 2 nics <16> ? <12> JPC1976, read the ip-masquerading howto. :) for a start <16> ok <10> does anyone know what the application for flash creation for linux is called? <12> i wasent sure there was one. :P <10> there is, I just cant remmember the name.... Ive used it before <15> do u know why I get this error : cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages <12> you got 1 or more programs accessing the package system at the same time <12> well most likely 1 OTHER program doing it.. :P and you are trying to start a 2nd.. and the package managers dont like that <17> how can i play gsm-encoded audio files within programs such as xmms, noatun, etc? <16> does anyone run squid on their home box <16> and use that as a proxy for work <16> byp***ing like stupid webfilters and what not <16> ? <18> I have been googling but i can't figure out why Slackware 10.2 reports that i only have 884MB RAM when i actually have 2GB. What is the deal? <12> i recall ages ago having to append a mem= option to the kernel arguments at boot time <12> could be a kernel/motherboard issue <18> Dr_Willis, ok thanks for the hint <12> yea - this was like .. err.. years ago. :P <12> kernel 2.2 :P i think even. Heh heh <19> psilikon: have a look at the user/kernel memory split in the kernel and the HIMEM topic. <19> psilikon: it is a fairly well discussed issue. <19> psilikon: you need to either change the split ratio or to enable HIMEM. <20> Hello all--I am trying to issue the command make oldconfig CC=gcc-3.3 HOSTCC=gcc-3.3 (both with and without the CC-HOSTCC ) and I get make: *** No rule to make target `oldconfig'. Stop.....any ideas what would be causing this...there is a make file in the kernel directory(current directory) <21> does anyone know if its possible to run a DNS server off a somewhat dynamic IP? <12> hmm.. that would be... interesting.. <22> hikenboot_: got this file in /usr/src/linux-version/.config <23> I am getting a kernel panic starting with "BUG: spinlock recursion on CPU#0"... the full message is here: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=111282 Any advice for resolution? <24> How do I retrieve a process running in the background, and bring it back up again on the screen? <22> fg <25> CodyDH: no idea <25> CodyDH: quick fix though, roll back to single processor kernel <25> it seems there a problem with locking <24> I have kget running in the background and would like to check the progress. How can I do that? <24> Any ideas? <24> ok, well I managed to do it by issuing command kget http://full.path.to/file <24> may have been another way, but that one worked. Thanks anyway :) <26> usr13: you should've said you were running a kde program that docks in the systray <24> Triskelios, Yea, I should have... <24> So, what would have been a way to do that? <26> well, normally it's supposed to have a systray icon <26> as it's a kde app you can also use dcop to tell it to show the window... <23> Is there a good way to resize a partition without losing data? PM keeps puking and giving me an error -- any other tools? (such as a parted boot disk?) <24> Yea, I know, but it didn't in this case. Maybe something in kget is broken. <24> CodyDH: What kind of partition is it? (What file system?) <23> usr13: NTFS :( <26> CodyDH: ntfsprogs has ntfsresize <23> Triskelios: Is this on any bootdisk you know of? <26> I think the usual parted boot disk comes with that
