<0> smacnay: anyhow just get the cheaper socket 754 variants anyhow.
<1> I might even get some trade in for the athlon chip and ram I have.
<0> smacnay: Also, why do you need new memory?
<1> I really don't but the upgrade special comes with new mem. I wouldn't mind 1 gig, even if half is the newer ddr and the other half is my old pc2700
<0> smacnay: you should be able to get away with PC2700, underclocking a bit.
<1> The newer mem is 400MHz and my current mem is 333.
<1> Apparently, this new mobo (asrock) defaults to 333 for the ram. One needs to manually set it to 400 if they wish.
<1> Any suggestions on how to set up a kernel on this current machine that will allow me to boot with a new mobo/cpu ?
<0> smacnay: no change needed usually.
<1> I believe the mobo is a via chipset.
<1> this mobo is an nforce chipset.
<2> snacnay: Try to get another nforce board
<1> piff: without going to ebay, I can't find any here in this area. They are (nforce2) no longer "around".
<2> smacnay: The only problem you might have is with drivers for a specific chipset.
<2> ah
<0> smacnay: for Linux chipset does not matter. You can compile in drivers for several chipsets.

<2> Blis***: Yes, but he may need to recombile, no?
<1> piff: that is what I was wondering. I could get a .deb kernel that will have all drivers there.
<2> s/recombile/recompile
<0> smacnay: thats a good idea too.
<1> Is the AMD 64bit 2600+ an "Athlon" or K7?
<2> smacnay: Can't you just copy over your home directory and re-install anew?
<1> I am guessing this is an older chip...
<1> I have no where to copy it to, unless I back it up to cd or dvd.
<3> Would someone take a look at this URL and tell me which folder I need? ftp://suse.inode.at/opensuse/distribution/
<0> piff: I have changed motherboards a few times without changing anything in the system except a few tweaks...
<2> smac: Actually... if you install a new installation, it might give you the option to preserve the home directory.. if its in a different partition
<0> piff: I have even perfected a technique to do this with MS Windows 2000, which is amazing :-)
<4> can anyone tell me a good site to learn linux from, I am used to windows and a little osx
<1> piff: I do have my home dir on a separate partition.
<2> MasterK: There are really too many to choose from. about.com is good for linux newbies
<2> smacnay: Then if you install a new distro, it will ask you how you want to format your partitions. Tell it to leave your home directory alone. Voila.
<1> piff: I was just thinking that... you are right.
<2> smac: Although you may have to tweak your config files
<3> Would someone take a look at this URL and tell me which folder I need? ftp://suse.inode.at/opensuse/distribution/
<1> piff: I will just d/l the latest debian install cd...
<2> smac: and re-install all the relevant software you installed later
<1> piff: yes, all those /etc/.. files.
<1> piff: not a problem.
<1> thanks for the tips.
<1> btw, what IS the 64bit AMD chip? K7 or K8?
<2> Newbie: I can't really say... too drunk at the moment. ;)
<2> Can someone else help Newbie?
<0> smacnay: K8, and is called "Athlon 64" instead of "Athlon XP". Some Semprons are 32 and some 64 bit.
<1> Blis***: thanks - this is 64.
<2> smac: What are you running now, and why do you want to upgrade?
<0> smacnay: for full details, the list of all part numbers and tech specs is here: http://WWW.AMDCompare.com/
<1> Well, this won't happen until Mon or Tues anyway.
<1> Blis***: thanks again.
<2> Has anyone else noticed FC5 to be slightly buggier than FC4?
<0> piff: before or after updates? :-)
<2> Blis***: Ah - you recommend downloading kernel updates?
<2> Blis***: Anything in particular I should upgrade?
<0> piff: _all_ updates, but the kernel ones are also particularly crucial.
<2> My FC4 box was *SOLID*. FC5 is a bit temperamental sometimes.
<0> piff: there are _lots_ updates containing bugfixes.
<2> Blis***: Thanks. Yeah, I'll do that soon....
<5> Hello everyone. I just got a CameraMate VideoSafe USB video capture device. Now that I have this ****er plugged in, I need to figure out how to make it work. I've looked for any information on this device, but to no avail. It's put out by the Zio company, a subsidiery of SmartDisk. Btw, I'm using the 2.6.16-0.rc6 kernel on Ark Linux.
<5> Hello nefarius.
<6> hi
<5> So... Do you think you can help me with my USB video capture woes?
<6> not really
<6> i've used the webcam package with my webcam
<5> Ah, okay then.
<6> but the cam is over 5 years old and well-documented in terms of what modules to get
<6> do you get anything in dmesg that indicates that linux sees the device?
<5> Yeah, it sees the device.
<5> In fact, here's the line from my logs: usb 2-3: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 4
<2> Ertain: how's Ark Linux?
<5> Eh, it's all right.
<2> Have you tried other distros?
<5> If you're planning to use it, though, don't use the dockyard-devel version. ;-)
<5> I have used Mandrake on my laptop. That's pretty good.
<5> Though I'm thinking of dropping this one and going with Kubuntu.
<2> Yeah, I've used Mandrake. It was good.
<2> msec is great
<2> Using Fedora Core 5 now

<5> How's that working out?
<2> Good, except that it's been a bit buggy
<2> Blis*** recommended I do kernel updates
<2> He has a point
<2> I installed it the first month it came out
<0> piff: I recommended you do _all_ updates.
<2> Yes, will do.
<5> Yeah, it would be good to update. :-P
<2> You stalking me, Blis***?
<0> piff: but yes, the kernel ones should be first...
<2> I update various software and services
<2> I just dont regularly update everything
<5> I can't figure out how to use this USB capture device. I don't even know if it's supported.
<2> Would like to help you, but I'm **** with hardware
<0> Ertain: Video4Linux and do a nice 'lsusb' get the manufacturer/device id and do a search.
<5> Right-o then.
<0> Ertain: Video4Linux is often abbreviated V4L or V4L2
<2> **** on the end, man... then hold it in...
<2> :P
<5> Neither do I. Anyway, I've found out that it uses the Zoran Co. stuff. Now going on to V4L.
<0> piff: I have been at parties where he day after people were asking me ''what you been drinking?'' and would not believe I don't drink intoxicants...
<5> I've told people that I don't drink and they say "if you eat something, it will absorb the alcohol," or "do you just drink <insert low alcoholic beverage here>?" Some people can't believe I don't drink. Strange. :-/
<2> Blis***: Cool. Have you tried either?
<2> Also, what is behind your decision to abstain?
<0> piff: briefly, but I don't like the taste of most ''drinks'' and I don't like smoke or whatever..
<2> Fair enough.
<2> Do you like the feeling?
<0> piff: well, I have never much felt much. Anyhow one reason I have is that many people use various types of intoxicants to give themselves a sort of ''free p***'' and I sort of think I don't need one...
<2> Yeah, that's true, they do.
<2> It's sad that society has reached the state where many people cannot have fun without drinking
<0> piff: I am now in England, and the natives tend to be famously stiff most of the time, and they drink mostly to get a bit of release from that...
<2> Yes, I know, I currently live in England too
<2> :)
<5> I don't need to drink since I don't need the feeling of it. That, and I don't need that crutch in my life.
<2> These are all valid points, folks. OTOH, people have been getting stoned/drunk/high in one way or another since the beginning of civlisation
<2> Blis***: Innocent? Moi?
<0> piff: yes, recreationally... B
<0> piff: yes, recreationally... But I can have fun regardless. But mostly from more southerly latitudes.
<2> Blis***: Have lived in London, Paris, New York, Sydney, Rome, Milan.
<2> And Singapore
<0> piff: in Milan and Rome you may have noticed that people drink mostly because they like the tast, not getting drunk...
<5> So I take it they drink in moderation?
<2> Yes, I have. I don't disagree with your basic premise, there, at all.
<2> What I'm saying is that getting high isn't necessarily a problematic thing
<5> As long as one does it in moderation. Usually, though, people go too far with taking drugs.
<2> Ertain: Yeah, often. Especially with drinking.
<0> piff: indeed, drinking is more often deadly than spliffs or other more innocent pastimes.
<2> Blis***: Indeed, the number of alcohol related accidents and crime tops all others. I think it is, in fact, the number one cause of violent crime.
<2> Blis***: Where we you before living in the UK?
<0> piff: mostly italy...
<2> Sei Italiano?
<0> piff: gi?.
<2> gi?
<0> piff: gia`.
<0> piff: I use iSO-8859-1 encoding :-) that was an accented a.
<0> piff: o sti cazzy.
<0> piff: e che fai in queste latitudini sciagurate?
<2> o venuto qui per Universita.
<2> My Italian is ****
<2> The English are a funny lot, though, aren't they?
<0> piff: surely. Whats your original ethnicity?
<0> piff: surely. Whats your original ethnicity/country?
<2> Blis***: Born in Italy
<2> Lived many places though... still not sure which is the best
<2> :)
<2> Going to sleep
<2> Goodnight.
<7> is there a place i can look to see what nic's will be automagically detected by linux so i dont have to mess with it.
<7> somewhere with a list of cards? or if anyone has any suggestions. i plan on installing debian or ubuntu, maybe slackware.
