<0> ehehe <1> spike, fedorafaq.com has some stuff or .org can't remember. But ubuntu by far wins for documentation. <0> Zider: u're allowed to say so only on ur own irc server :P <2> believe me, I used to run an irc server!" <2> now it's only a dc hub :/ <2> guess I'm not l337 enough anymore <0> exactly, go away crying @ mom <3> 1337...lol <3> so, i take it mandriva doesn't ****..i thought mandriva was an offshot of fedora <3> they call mandriva 'the best graphical desktop' for linux <2> personally, I don't like any rpm based distro.. but that's just me.. doesn't mean it ****.. just don't ask me about it ;) <0> jason_: first most important rule ever, not even just for linux: DO NOT BELIEVE anybody not offering proofs of his/her comments <0> nything said must be supported with linkable arguments <0> upon request of course, and might be ppl hasnt got the time to go into details <3> Zider, if you don't like rpms, are you saying you prefer .deb packages? <3> spike, true
<0> Zider: dont fool him with gentoo please *g* <2> jason_: I'm sure they are nice, but me and apt don't get along in any way at all.. :) <2> spike: no, I would never recommend gentoo to someone who's new to linux <1> jason_, check out live cds first. If you have the bandwidth to kill. But like i say I highly recommend ubuntu for newcomers ease of use and documentation is there. <3> lol...so, you prefer red hat? <0> Zider: well, go figure, I'd recommend LFS ;) <2> spike: ;) <0> as a side distro, tho <3> i want the latest and greatest! <0> but I definitely would <0> jason_: that's like swearing <2> spike: I've been meaning to try LFS in an emulator, just tro check it out.. but haven't got around to it yet.. :D <3> i want something that's not open to trojans and pop ups..lol <0> ehehe, thegleek's irc server is running on suse9.3 :P <3> what if you werent so new to linux, would you suggest freebsd or something? <2> if you by "pop ups" mean web page commercial banners and ****, it has nothing to do with the distro, only what browser and settings you use.. :) <3> spike, that bastard! HE ALWAYS RIPS ON SUSE <3> sorry for the caps <0> jason_: see, u didnt get it: why are you believing me?! <0> I just made that up <2> hehe <3> damnit..i did it again <2> just like britney <0> ahahahaa <0> damn you :) <3> baby one more time <2> *hits jason_* <2> ;) <0> well, gotta work, c ya later <2> glhf <3> then is there a linux distro that happens to be more suited for, say, burning dvds? <3> bye spike and thx <2> you have some strange questions :) <3> Zider, i know <2> the programs you use are the same no matter what distro you use, it's just the way you install them and configure the system that differs <3> so, if that is true, why are there so many versions of the same darn language? <2> language..? <3> what is the diff between debian untested and say, gnoppix or ubuntu? <3> by language, i meant, that if it is all unix/linux, then why so many distros out there? <2> untested uses more beta versions (newer but maybe unstable) than "stable" (which I'd guess ubuntu is) <4> jason_: linuxquestions.com had a survey recently where 200K ppl participated; ubuntu and slackware tied with most popular at 19% <3> Zider,a ctually ubuntu uses totally unstable <2> jason_: swing and a miss then. ;) <3> Zider, have u ever used freebsd? <2> jason_: perhaps ubuntu is better "tuned" for live cd's then <2> jason_: yes <3> to me, itd about the number of packages that come with and the ability to detect and configure your hardware <3> Zider, what do you think of it? <2> jason_: well, I didn't use it long enough to form an opinion of it.. I just remember that the ble console was bloody annoying.. :D <2> blue <3> okay, so what is your brand that you like? <2> my "brand" of what? linux? <3> yes <2> I'm a gentoo man myself <4> jason_: imho the qt library that kde uses appears more sharp and vivid vs the gtk library that gnome uses <3> ahh..what do you like about gentoo? <2> the package system, the dir structure.. just the way everything is.. it's so 'me' :) <3> gnubien, i agree, but with kde, i can hardly FIND anything...like where the hell are the network tools?? <3> gnubien, and with gnome, its like, everything is more streamlined <1> jason_, gentoo is not for new people. <3> okay, and plus, i headr gentoo does NOT have trojans or a lot of popups...lol..but aside form that, what is so good about gentoo that the developers can get hired by microsoft??
<4> jason_: linux is about choice; other OS's dont provide as much choice imho <2> jason_: what do you mean "can be hired by microsoft"? <3> Zider, the developer of gentoo and his buddies were hired by companies connected to Microsoft because MS wanted a hand in the open source market <2> jason_: I see.. haven't heard about that.. <1> jason_, lol popups and trojans? wth? <2> jason_: got any link? <3> they wanted people wiith open soruc emindset so they could destroy US now..not enough they have 90% of new computers shopped with windoze <3> gosh i cannot type today <3> Zider, no links...I read it on google news some 15 months ago... <2> ah, I only read slashdot :D <3> Zider, well, i cannot blame him...he said he didnt receive enough monetary support from the open source guys, so he was forced to take the money <3> it was a cool move on MS too <3> anyways, thanks a lot guys, i am going back to winows server 2003 <2> well, they sure have the cash to get some bloody fine coders <3> i heard theres not a lot of trojans or popups in windows 2003...lol <2> the only windows I have is in an emulator.. :D <2> and that's win98se :D <3> Zider, cmon, you aint foolin me, you are using Internet Information Services as a web server right now! <2> jason_: right, what was I thinking ;) <3> Zider, and you are tired now cause you were up all hours called tech support for the laest and greatest Nvidia graphics card on your new Dell, which came with XP Home. <2> if I would have driver problems, it'd be for an ATI card :D <3> Zider, true...lol..i have no money, so that issue is moot forme <2> heh <2> I have nvidia in all my system except the bloody laptop <3> i am a gnome man myself..most people like kde <2> <- fluxbox :D <3> fluxbox? <2> yeps <2> brb <3> ok <2> tada <5> will most linux distros id a sata pci card? <2> yes <6> Is it possible to boot linux on the new mac mini with intel cpu? <7> I think so, it should be possible. <7> Just look at whether you find a download for that arch. <6> Ok, but I can't boot with a regular cd as I do on mac-mini with motorola cpu? I think I need a special cd or something. <7> Yes, you need a CD for the MAC boot stuff but x86 CPU arch <8> micropal, yes, it's been done, really the only change is that you need elilo as a bootloader <6> ok, so it's easy :) Thats fine. thanks! <0> anybody familiar with tapes? <0> nm, solved <9> hi guys, i fixed a Soundblaster Audigy LS with ca0106 drivers, but i cant hear any sound, and there is no error at all. Ive done alsaconf like 3-4 times but nothing happends... Xmms runs fine just that there is no sound >_< The volume is on highest on alsamixer and xmms, so i dont really know what the problem is, any of u know? Im running debian with the 2.6.15-1-686 kernel <9> ive googled like 2k times, just seen people having the same problem, not the solvation :) <10> Hello <10> What is a true effective way of protect myself against a fork bomb? <9> someone who has any clue about my problem? <0> MegaByte: ulimit <0> knarkapa: already asked in #alsa I suppose <11> never run something if you don't know what it is ? ulimit can help as well iirc <9> no, thx 4 the channel dude <0> or run obsd :) <0> afaik that's the only one not affected by forkbombs <0> s/afaik/iirc/ <4> knarkapa: ask in #alsa ? <9> yup, doing it right now <12> MegaByte: maybe checkout /etc/security/limits.conf <10> stray_: this doesn't exist under Slackware <13> i recall a big artical a few mo ago on the forkbomb stuff. <13> check slashdot perhaps for the details. <14> Got a problem accessing a certain directory in my /home folder.. <14> was muckind around with some commands as root and somehow the firefox directory is not accessible now.. <14> *mucking.. <13> heh. <13> as root you could just delete the firefox dir. <13> that would reset your firefox settings however. <14> did a chown -R with the user.group but didnt help either.. <15> im trying to patch kernel source and i tried patch -p0 <patch-2.6.15.3 but then it tells me something about having the wrong strip otion or something... am i suppsoe to patch the tarball? <14> funny thing is that it shows the directory and its files are owned by mutew/users I cannot access the directory.. <14> z6bt check the patch level try -p1 <15> k <15> er... its telling me something about ***ume -R? <16> does linspire linux run windows programs by default or do i have to get wine ?
