<0> what's the command to strip control characters from a text file?
<1> strip ?
<1> :D
<2> Hey
<2> How do I ***ign manually my pci card an irq?
<2> Hey
<2> My nvidia card is using irq 11 and my pci card irq 3
<2> is there a conflict?
<2> err
<2> nvidia irq 3 pci card irq 11
<3> I'm very concerned that my server may have been 0wned. I know I am losing some e-mails, as if somebody was connecting and deleting them every now and then, as they're not staying in my mailbox. Anyone have any advice on what I could do to diagnose the problem?
<4> how many ppl have accounts in the server?
<4> user accounts
<4> jez
<3> erm
<3> me, really

<4> only root and one account named jez?
<4> jez: is it a production server?
<3> well there's loads of user accounts, as usual for a unix box
<3> what is a production server?
<5> the thing you tell your boss is used to produce nifty work for him ;)
<4> jez: as in, is it a real server out there serving some website or some kind of service. it probably is if you're saying it has loads of user accounts
<3> yeah it is
<3> although only my website and my dad's really
<3> and our email
<3> ya know what makes me really suspicious?
<3> in ps -Al, this is running, 'stunnel-4.04loc'
<3> that does NOT look right
<4> jez: who admins this server other than you?
<3> nobody except occasionally my VPS provider
<4> jez: look for something in the init scripts for this stunnel thing, who owns that process?
<4> somebody help this guy, 'cause i'm a n00b. i'm just good at asking questions, which is what i mostly do in this channel
<3> hmm
<3> UID 32001, which is cpanel
<3> there is a weird account called 'operator'
<3> which owns a file called /root/mail/inbox
<3> this looks very suspicious
<4> jez: which users have access to the cpanel? operator must be the user for the cpanel
<3> well i dont get how my email is disappearing then
<4> jez: maybe someone is viewing e-mail through webmail or the cpanel or something and erasing it. someone with access to your inbox, like the VPS provider guy you mentioned
<3> there are 5 open TIME_WAIT connections on the pop3 port...
<3> weird.
<3> the VPS provider is dehe.com
<3> it seems unlikely it would be them, they've been quite professional
<6> hi folks. i yanked the HD from a crashed machine and plugged it into my laptop through USB. /dev/sda1 (the root partition) shows up in /etc/fstab and mounts just fine. The user files that I want are in the second partition, which is LVM; is there a way I can fsck it without mounting it, and also, how do I mount it?
<7> hey all, one of the drives in 1 of my volume groups has gone bad, so to get into the system I need to make that vg not mount. I was going to edit /etc/fstab but / is on a different vg and I can't find any references under /dev/mapper/ when booting from a grml live cd... any idea how I can mount the / vg from a live cd to edit /etc/fstab ? :-/
<8> Anyone good with KMail, or who can do a sanity check on why my filters aren't working?
<6> anyone know the right usenet group to post an LVM question to?
<9> when I do: grep ssh /var/log/secure I see a number of people trying to access the system but had failed ... can someone advise on what precaution I must take against this?
<6> block that port at your firewall, basically
<10> czaveri: If you only allow ssh login using ssh keys (and not p***words) then you're ok...
<11> If you only use secure p***words, you're ok too
<10> czaveri: You might want to ask redragon on #linuxhelp on undernet about some script he wrote that temporarily disable access from an ip address...
<11> And, you don't need to protect yourself against failed login attempts imo
<10> The number of users you have to support probably affects your answer.
<9> ok, thanks kittenbot. I think I am going to narrow down access to my ISP IP Range
<12> hello kittenbot
<10> heya, paddy
<13> Dbus & Hal & ivman works fine for everything else (like usb reader and zaurus pda), BUT cdrom insertion/ejection doesn't trigger anything and thus CDs won't get automounted. Anyone have this working?
<13> Perhaps solved: the problem is probably because cdroms have entries in fstab.
<14> has anyone had troubles with ogle and black screens (great sound but no picture)?
<15> haha
<16> hi folks, can anyone tell me how to install a distro via hdd?
<17> swim: download the .iso for the distro?
<16> gnubien: right, then what?
<17> swim: your kernel have loopback enabled?
<16> gnubien: hmm not sure
<18> swim: if you're installing to a separate hd, you could boot the install iso under qemu ;)
<16> amphi: I am as a matter of fact installing to a seperate hd
<18> swim: the downside is the installer won't see any of your real hw apart from the hd
<18> and some slowness can be anticpated ;)
<16> hmmm
<16> damned my burner!
<19> swim: libraries have cd burners.
<19> and faster internet connections :P
<16> hey i didnt even think about that! :) but then again my friend has both closer than the library
<19> yea, but then he gets to call in the favor and raid your porn stash.

<16> unix_infidel: I'm basically trying everything I can that I'm slightly interested in, or has apps that I want for example frugalware has gnome 2.14... so does foresight, but I didnt dig conary all that much
<16> hehe
<16> sort of considering giving VLOS a try, but frugalware seems to be one of the most up to date binary distros
<19> i gave up uptodate when i realized it meant breakage and fiddling.
<16> well yah if everything up to date turns out to be like that Ill also give up
<16> id love to go back to debian but I cant stand unstables instability!
<19> use etch
<16> i want gnome 2.14
<17> swim: http://lug.umbc.edu/lug-mailing-list/2000-01/msg00411.html
<18> swim: qemu is handy for trying different OSes
<16> oh thx gnubien
<17> swim: modprobe loop; mount -o loop -t iso9660 filename.iso /mnt/iso http://www.linuxhelp.net/isos/
<20> anyone know how to get sound from a hauppauge card?
<20> I can get video via v4l2 but no sound
<17> jshriver as root: lspci |grep -i multimedia and post output to this chan
<20> 0000:00:02.7 Multimedia audio controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] Sound Controller (rev a0)
<20> 0000:00:09.0 Multimedia video controller: Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture (rev 11)
<20> 0000:00:09.1 Multimedia controller: Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture (rev 11)
<20> 0000:00:0a.0 Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq ES1371 [AudioPCI-97] (rev 08)
<20> I moved this from another machine as part of an upgrade. Before I had a cable that went from audio out on the card to my sound cards line in... but that doesnt work..
<20> I tried just plugging the speakers directly into the video card, but no sound either which is what confuses me the most.
<17> jshriver: laptop?
<20> desktop
<17> hehe
<20> pci card
<17> jshriver: ok, did you look up your soundcard make/model at alsa-doc?
<20> the onboard audio doesnt work hense the Ensoniq card... which works fine.
<17> jshriver search for sound card at http://ALSA-project.org/alsa-doc/ ?
<20> oh I get sound from all other applications fine... it's just I dont get anything from the video capture card for watching TV.
<17> ok
<20> I can see movies using mplayer, xawtv etc.. just no sound
<17> jshriver: http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?action=find&find=xawtv
<20> thanks
<17> jshriver: http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?action=find&find=tv
<20> hrm didnt think I had to compiled alsa drivers for the vid capt... will check the kernel source tree.. I added bttv, etc.. and v4l2
<17> ok
<16> damn... I've been a linux user for about 6-7 years now, but last real install was ubuntu, and honestly it wasnt what I want anymore. Before that it was little distros like Archlinux, and CRUX... then BSD for a bit. Now I know what I want but can't figure out what to use. I want "ease" I dont want to have to set everything up anymore... I want an os that is setup for general work (so i can get work done and not worry about the os all the ti
<16> me). I want speed, and up to date packages... as stable as that allows... including gnome 2.14. any recommendations?
<5> archlinux no longer fits, swim ?
<16> shevegen: no longer, too much to setup, I want stuff done for me already... I dont have time or patience anymore.
<20> You've used linux for 6-7 years and *now* you're concerned about ease of use? lol I've been using it for longer and I must say now it's the easiest to use... just pick any distro and learn it's packaging system.. it's a lot better now than having to grab source tarballs, and chance dependancies then dependancies of dep's like you use to and compile all day ;)
<5> ah
<5> try rpath linux
<20> apt-get install gnome .. whatever. for debian or any debian like distro..
<20> Try Fedora Core...
<5> its anaconda install is very comfortable
<20> or just use Knoppix and install it to the HD :) can't get much easier hehe
<16> jshriver: definitely never liked fedora
<16> install i can deal with anything... actually I can deal with any setup if I had to. But I dont want to anymore
<16> shevegen: yah rpath looked interesting, but only gnome 2.12
<5> oh hmm
<5> http://www.foresightlinux.com/distro/
<5> "It currently sports GNOME 2.14 as the preferred desktop environment."
<16> shevegen: yah I tried that, pretty cool, but not sure if I really dug conary
<5> :-)
<5> all things with pros and cons swim!
<16> I think Im running out of options really... Ill try frugalware, if not then Ill go back to foresight
<5> you maybe better off with a debian based distribution, and using apt-get
<5> the frugalware guys are one of the friendliest
<16> yah, very akin to archlinux too... which when I have time I do find a great distro
<5> the installer became easier too IMHO... i remember some months ago, it was asking me to input the grub menu.lst :)
<5> so i went back to kanotix again :D
<16> then there is also VLOS
<20> hrm found out something intersting.. when I use mplayer with v4l I get sound but video is screwed up.. but if I use v4l2 I get video fine but no sound lol
<16> gnubien: I know how to mount an iso, but how do I then install from it?
<17> ok
<17> swim: guess you look for the executables in the root dir but best to goto distro's info page imho
<20> What does this mean? X Error of failed request: XF86DGANoDirectVideoMode
<20> I used xawtv -hwscan to find my video capt card... and did as suggested xawtv -device /dev/video0
<20> and it gives me that error
<20> Is there a command to see a list of all device drivers loaded and what device they're mapped to?
<21> if i want to allow the users group go access mount /mnt/cdrom and umount /mnt/cdrom... do i have to edit the /etc/fstab and visudo?
<22> anyone here use "ripperX", to rip mp3/ogg/etc... from CD's?
<22> well its just that for some reason the Ogg Vorbis option is disabled in the menu? I mean in the menu to select the encoding type...
