<0> but it acts in different way
<0> why?
<1> because it is there.
<2> n1bbl3: reboot is telinit 6, halt is stop
<3> n1bbl3, because that's how it's -supposed- to work?
<3> Or "shutdown -r now" for reboot or "shutdown -h now" for halt
<0> /sbin/reboot -> halt
<4> n1bbl3: But, still, the program can know how it's called.
<5> Sound still isn't working.
<0> Brainix, ok... must be
<4> n1bbl3: Do you program in C?
<2> n1bbl3: oh I see what you mean. I don't know why
<0> Brainix, try to ;)
<2> that is kind of strange...
<4> n1bbl3: main() can accept two arguments, argc and argv. argc is an integer which represents the number of command-line arguments. argv is an array which contains the command-line arguments.

<0> Brainix, ok, but in this case both of them I p***ed no arguments
<4> n1bbl3: The first command-line argument is the program name --- the way that the user has invoked the program.
<2> halt is a part of a reboot?
<3> So yeah, as Brainix is saying, it may be the same program, but it can act differently depending on what name you run it as.
<4> n1bbl3: In the first case, the first command-line argument would be "reboot". In the second case, the first command-line argument would be "halt".
<6> hi all
<4> Seven_Six_Two: Yes. halt and reboot are the same program.
<6> anybody who has installed slackware on a dell inspiron 6000?
<0> Seven_Six_Two, reboot is a symbolico link to /sbin/halt
<0> *symbolic
<2> n1bbl3: yeah, I see that. I didn't know
<4> nixbox: I run Slackware 9.0 (heavily modified) on a Toshiba Tecra 550CDT.
<0> Seven_Six_Two, neither me 15 minutes ago =)
<7> gn8@all
<2> 3 years of linux, and I still feel like an idiot on a daily basis ;)
<4> Seven_Six_Two: You're not an idiot. You've just never had any reason to look into how halt and reboot work. :-)
<1> everyone is an idiot
<1> so stfu
<6> Brainix, i compiled 2.6.13 for insipron because 2.4 doesn't work as dell uses sata interface, i also made the initrd and as i am using ext3 filesystem so included jbd and ext3 modules in initrd, then i changed all the hdaX to sdaX in the fstab and the root entry in lilo from hda9 to sda9, now as the kernel starts loading, it hangs after detecting the floppy controller, i think its just before loading the ramdisk
<2> When I help my friends with linux I don't, but it's all relative.
<4> nixbox: initrd can be problematic, I've learned. Why not just compile everything into your kernel that you need to boot?
<3> nixbox, The ramdisk is normally loaded by the bootloader, not the kernel itself. THe kernel is simply told where it is, and will uncompress and mount it.
<1> lord...
<1> tennessee go figure
<4> tirsek: Unless the initrd is a part of the bootable kernel image.
<1> i need to move damned conservatives
<3> Brainix, that's only possible on mips, isn't it? Unless you're talking about the initramfs, which isn't an initrd, although it's somewhat similar.
<6> Brainix, ok i will try that and come back
<8> Wouldn't the GPL cause problems if you were to trying to program and sell games?
<9> Quiznos u here?
<2> eugman: not if you're ok with releasing the source
<4> tirsek: I think that it's possible under any architecture. I've done just that under PPC.
<8> Right but under the gpl can't somebody but the game and source and then start selling it himself?
<4> eugman: Why would it?
<2> eugman: yes
<9> anybody have any experience with microcode for processors in linux
<3> Brainix, A while back I tried something like that for x86, but couldn't make it work. How do you do that? It works nicely with initramfs though.
<2> so what? you don't have to use gpl if you don't want to. I think you should though
<4> eugman: I think that you have two options. You could release the game under a different license, or you could try to make money on a GPL'd game.
<10> zappacky: irc.oftc.net #kernelnewbies. much more technical channel than here.
<4> tirsek: Let me Google and get back to you in a few minutes, cool?
<2> lol.
<3> Brainix, sure. Don't waste too much time on it though, initramfs is way cooler anyway :)
<1> Seven_Six_Two, and i mean it!
<4> tirsek: http://penguinppc.org/embedded/howto/root-filesystem.html
<4> tirsek: Look at 13.2.
<4> tirsek: Yeah, my knowledge about all of this is obsolete. A few years ago, I had a summer internship, and I had to build a distro. I haven't touched this stuff since.
<2> Ringwraith`: I don't know how to change that, but I'm not using irssi like I should be
<3> Brainix, I still don't think this stuff works on the i386 arch branch of the kernel.
<1> well try **** off version 1.0
<1> its pretty cool
<11> i'm having trouble getting linux to resolve dns
<4> tirsek: I see.
<2> oh that's a real app?
<10> endeavormac: put "nameserver x.x.x.x" in /etc/resolv.conf
<3> Brainix, Anyway, it's a nonissue. Initramfs is arch neutral, and less wasteful on memory and cpu resources. All in all, a win-win :)
<1> Seven_Six_Two, Yes it is
<11> i have that, and it's the IP of a valid nameserver from my ISP
<4> tirsek: Cool. :-) I'll remember that if I ever again have to build a distro. LoL! Thanks.
<10> and what happens when you run nslookup and type > yahoo.com at the prompt

<2> lol... is it on sf?
<1> Seven_Six_Two, yeah http://****offversion1.0.sf.net/
<11> it's hanging
<10> I thought it was spelled "****"
<11> connection timed out, no servers could be reached
<10> remember, unix is case-sensitive
<1> endeavormac, thats an endeavor
<11> :p
<1> infi, your mom graduated from dumb*** university!
<12> version 1.0 came out?
<10> endeavormac: try tracerouting to your server IP.
<1> Uriel_Darling, yes
<12> I thought it was still pre beta ^_^
<1> get the latest
<10> ringwraith`: where she was taught by Prof. Jack*** bahahaha you're so funny.
<10> and 6.
<1> infi, you are infinatley a bastard
<10> "infinitely"
<13> heh
<12> ok, i'm lagg'n for sure
<12> BRB
<1> FieldySnuts, look at that color!
<13> ?
<14> anyone know how to get rid of an old driver?
<10> ? is it loaded?
<14> i believe so
<14> but i have 2 version of it
<1> SUSaiyan, lsmod
<10> lsmod will tell you.
<1> suspended, lsmod
<11> network is unreachable!
<1> infi your mom is great in bed
<10> endeavormac: then you have other issues.
<11> ok i've got a good idea of what to do from here
<11> yeah, thanks
<5> I would really appreciate it if someone would help me get my sound working.
<10> BasicX: Sorry, my libpsychic.so library is not working today.
<5> ?
<4> BasicX: Ask specific questions, and you'll get specific answers. :-)
<5> My sound isn't working.
<5> I can't hear anything.
<2> BasicX: congratulations. and?
<5> Using Slackware 10.1.
<15> check your ear for blockages
<2> what have you tried?
<5> I'm giving you the detials, smart***.
<5> alsaconf
<5> It worked on Ubuntu.
<10> "You should be alert during the next days: Do not open any message with an attached filed called "Invitation" regardless of who sent it. It is a virus that opens an Olympic Torch which "burns" the whole hard disc C of your computer."
<10> NO, NOT THE OLYMPIC TORCH VIRUS!!!11oneonenonon
<15> :P
<2> infi: i don't have a c:
<10> omfg!
<2> lol
<15> my brother told me about that urban legend
<10> "This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital information is kept. "
<11> also, in vi, i can't delete any characters?
<10> the ZERO SECTOR! DUN DUN DUN
<5> So can anyone help me?
<16> lol
<10> endeavormac: "x"
<17> BIOS anti-virus protection will stop that
<16> the best self help is to stop using slackware
<13> amen
<5> Let me guess.
<5> Gento?
<15> hey hey hey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
<5> Gentoo*
<15> the best self help is suicide
<10> sneaky- it would stop it if one was really afraid of the olympic torch coming around and formatting their hard drive.
<5> You're an idiot.
<15> linux will be linux
<16> lol
<13> BasicX: no need to troll / adhom
