<TragicZ> 'grep pattern filename' is easier, but still
<tkup> Dr_Willis, well I don't have any problem right now. I'm more guarding for similar problems in the future
<tkup> I could try and mess up one of the cables that I have here and try it, but I don't have the tools to put it back in a working state.
<danfg> TragicZ: didn't think of that, no. not when there were many files. i thought of asking before messing around with tools i'm not familiar with :) thanks though
<TragicZ> just wondering
<tkup> Hopefully, someone here who had to deal with a borken cat5 cable can comment on how he/she figured it out.
<TragicZ> sometimes some things seem so obvious you kick yourself for not thinking of it before
<MagMaz> tkup: I get those messages when I plug in, or unplug the cable. If you see it when you haven't touched the cable, I would ***ume it to mean the cable is faulty
<Dr_Willis> lights should come on - on the NIC also.
<Dr_Willis> thats how i can tell :P
<danfg> TragicZ: believe me, NOTHING seems obvious to me in linux right now. :) hopefully that'll change with time
<tkup> I see
<TragicZ> danfg it will
<TragicZ> danfg you'll wonder how you got anything done with windows
<danfg> :)
<Delmar> and there we have it... set `alias eth0 tg3` and `alias eth1 e1000` and still .. e1000 came up as eth0 this time.. if I shutdown and power up again.. it will probably switch back.
<tragicz> **** *** dialup
<tragicz> i'm glad i'm getting broadband
<tkup> Linux was more fun back in the days of dial-up
<tragicz> why's that?
<tragicz> modems **** on linux
<tragicz> well.. win modesm
<tragicz> *winmodems
<tragicz> where weren't has prominent back in the day
<joh6nn> no no
<joh6nn> winmodems ****s
<gniretar> hi all
<joh6nn> period. no matter where they are
<gniretar> hey, i'm having a wierd BIND error
<gniretar> http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/traversal.ch?domain=mail.meteor-web.com&type=A
<Delmar> So, on another topic.. it would seem that there is no support in even the most recent 2.6 kernel for an IDE drive attached to the PATA port of a Promise Technology, Inc. PDC20378 (FastTrak 378/SATA 378). Has anyone got this working? because so far it seems as if it simply doesn't work.
<gniretar> on my primary server
<tragicz> delmar
<tragicz> haha
<Delmar> mmm?
<gniretar> i cant figure out how to get a error out of BIND
<Delmar> tragicz, man thats sad. why the hell are u on dialup?
<tragicz> because my father is cheap and my neighbor activated his wpa
<roblaptop> hehe
<Dr_Willis> :)
<Dr_Willis> time to learn to crack wpa?
<Dr_Willis> or give the neighbor some $$$
<Dr_Willis> 'i give you free tech support.....'
<Dr_Willis> ... and i dont mention to your wife that ......
<tkup> tragicz, well back in the days you had to spend hours configuring hardware and software without the help of the internet. Not only do you learn how to set up your hardware but also other things on the way. Plus you feel invincile. Nowadays, you're one search away from figuring out the problem.
<tragicz> i know how to crack wpa
<tragicz> tkup, that's not necessarily a bad thing.. true.. we have to deal with n00bs more so
<tragicz> the problem is with cracking wpa, is you have to capture some of their traffic, and they are almost NEVER on
<Sin_Eastwood> hi
<Delmar> Anyone here have any ideas on getting an IDE disk working on a PATA port of a FastTrak 378? i just cant make it work :(.
<Dr_Willis> :)
<joh6nn> Delmar: ask tkup
<Delmar> tkup, ^^ :P
<unix_infidel> evenin'
<Crell> Greetings. I'm having trouble using /dev/dsp for a legacy program. The device is present with the proper permissions, but when I try to run the program (Quake 3), I get an error "device or resource busy". I'm ***uming that alsa or artsd (I run KDE) is doing something with it, but I don't know what. Any suggestions.
<Crell> (Kernel is 2.6, with alsa and oss emulation.)
<unix_infidel> Crell, try looking at what device is using it currently with lsof
<Delmar> kill arts
<tkup> Delmar, 1) download a tar.bz2 of the latest kernel. 2) take a trip to source forge and download all the sources related to the IDE project, if any. 3) disconnect from the internet 4) make it work
<unix_infidel> erm what program is currently using that device.
<gniretar> hey
<gniretar> whats a command to fina all files modified after a ceratin date?
<gniretar> find*
<joh6nn> gniretar: man find
<capiCrimm> how do I kill a binded port?
<Crell> unix_infidel: lsof | grep dsp doesn't find anything but a warning message that /dev/.static/dev cannot be stat()ed.
<Crell> Killing arts, though, did work.
<Crell> Hrm. I guess I'll go bug #KDE... :-)
<Delmar> tkup, cool thanks man :P
<Delmar> tkup, in other words u have no clue at all.
<tkup> capiCrimm, for i in udp tcp; do fuser -k 10000/$i;done
<tkup> Delmar, no idea sorry
<Sin_Eastwood> i hear mathamatics like having ***
<tkup> capiCrimm, 10000 is a port number
<rob> Sin_Eastwood, by numbers?
<capiCrimm> tkup. :D thanks
<Sin_Eastwood> rob : didnt you know. *** is the ultimate form of math
<rob> thats nice
<tragicz> Sin_Eastwood, isn't *** just multiplication?
<tragicz> and a***ual reproduction is division
<rob> heh
<man_in_shack> anyone know what i need to test force feedback?
<Dr_Willis> a game that actually supports it? :p
<man_in_shack> yeah
<man_in_shack> where would i find one of those? :)
<tragicz> man_in_shack, bitorrent?
<Dr_Willis> i cant even think of any PS2 games taht use it any more
<Dr_Willis> or PC games.
<man_in_shack> well apparently this controller has rumblepacks
<MagMaz> M$ Flight Sim uses it
<man_in_shack> so i wanna try it
<tragicz> ahh.. i've got a shiny new heat sink and fan
<tragicz> so much better than that ghetto crap i was using
<tragicz> (broke my original fan, so i used a case fan)
<gniretar> hey guys, i'm getting this stupid DNS problem and i cant figuer out how to get BIND to report problems it is having
<gniretar> it says it is replaying to queries but the replies arnt getting to the destination
<tragicz> from a magazine i'm reading: "Linux is less susceptible to spyware and viruses."
<tragicz> is linux vulnerablet to such things at all?
<jrhodes> samba is
<tragicz> er.. crappy typing/spelling tonight
<jrhodes> and by 'less susceptible' it really means that there are still loads of little security holes, but linux is a much lower priority target for people who write those kind of things
<tragicz> i know.. no virus writters or spyware writters really care about linux
<tragicz> its like.. herb garden versus acres of corn
<Dr_Willis> of course a security issue in a server that only a few linux boxs are running.. is not a security problem with 'linux' just the service. :P
<lscd> especially if the service is cross-platform, yada yada
<Dr_Willis> when in doubt - dont run services you dont need.
<Dr_Willis> when in doubt - panic!
<Dr_Willis> :P
<tragicz> jah
<tragicz> oh, i scanned my local government's wifinet
<lscd> when in doubt, don't install stuff you don't need, especially if it's suid. etc. etc
<lscd> oh, and..... don't panic :D
<tragicz> i think they are using a mac mini as a router
<mjbjr> forget about doubt, just don't run services you don't need
<tragicz> / proxy server
<Tek-69> what perm settings are font files supposed to have?
<tragicz> Tek-69, as long as they are world read-able, it should be okay
<tragicz> i'm guessing
<tragicz> not positive
<mjbjr> prolly 744
<Tek-69> tragicz: they are, but theyre also world writable i was wondering if i could change that
<mjbjr> why would you want them world writable?
<Tek-69> mjbjr: i don't know thats why i was askin
<tragicz> reminiscient of the KKK, no? http://images.indymedia.org/imc/vancouver/child1_bomber.jpgbzbmxr.jpg
<martian67> would you have already identified them world writable?
<Tek-69> martian67: yeah, i stat'd them. I'm trying to tighten down my box.
<worthawholebean> Is there an open source tool I can use to fill out PDFs?
<worthawholebean> forms, that is
<Codename_V> nope. but acrobat reader would probably work
<Codename_V> or heck, I dunno. maybe some open source app does work these days
<unix_infidel> nope.
<unix_infidel> acrobat pro, and its win32/osx only.
<iKernel> chroot thinks that a file that exsits doesn't exsit. http://pastebin.com/597453
<unix_infidel> maybe win64 too now....but that's irrelevant.
<j2quinn> is there a program to convert pdi to iso ?
<Codename_V> unix_infidel: why wouldn't acrobat reader work?
<iKernel> says that the file doesn't exsit, but when I ls it ls it ls doesn't say that it doesn't exsit.
<unix_infidel> Codename_V, for true editing of a pdf you need acrobat pro...i'm sure reader would work for FORMS....but then again, microsoft WORD 97 and above works for fillingout pdf forms.
<unix_infidel> but, Again, that's neither here nor there....and especially off-topic here.
<ack_syn> well well well
<Codename_V> well did he not say fill out a pdf? I kinda had in mind those pdf thingys like you get from the irs or whatever.
<ack_syn> nice channel
<ack_syn> lots of people
<ack_syn> humm
<Dr_Willis> "In Soviet Russia, forms fill out You!"
<ack_syn> this way that i like
