<0> but i just need a development machine
<1> sha1sum: Agreed...it's not the speedyest (ermm...fastest, I guess) at installing things, but it does offer quite a few binaries as well. I've had to use quite a bit of 32-bit binaries, because 64-bit was broken for many programs for awhile.
<2> hell it took me days to figure out I had to be in the wheel group to su
<3> gentoo it is ;-)
<2> yeah gentoo is good for dev work
<4> sha1sum: no, but it's sort of weird compromise between ease of use and security
<5> I have a question. If I add a path in /etc/ld.so.conf , do I have to run some command to make the changes happen?
<2> okay guys... time to hit the road home from work
<2> FINALLY
<2> ****
<4> hussam: ldconfig
<2> cya round
<1> yeah, gentoo is great for dev (I'm a CS major)
<1> later, sha1sum
<3> sha1sum: i just spent days on a similar problem in a datbase, drove me NUTS just one little security call.... 3 days to code 5 words. :-(
<5> mord: only once, right?

<0> freebsd is really easy to use
<4> ^Howler: what a coincidence. i work for the cs dept :)
<4> hussam: once after any changes
<5> ok thanks, mord
<1> mord: oh yeah? that's cool =) Where?
<4> ^Howler: cs.joensuu.fi
<1> mord: ah, fair enough hehe
<4> ^Howler: a hint, most of the ppl here /are/ cs majors :)
<3> i love how gentoo imports code for stuff and compiles it rather than hoping someone's binaries are packaged properly...
<3> or were ;-)

<6> :)
<4> or were. indeed.
<1> mord: That's different than most places...Well, I went to a Engineering school, so I guess it might be different in other places.
<4> ^Howler: could very well be
<3> more beer :-)
<4> q_w_e: damn i wish i had some. just drained my last wine bottle...
<4> anyway off to sleep
<4> early morning and all that
<3> oh i have some here, and only 10000 kilometers away heheh
<1> heh, and I'm off to home =)
<7> I'm having a problem with a computer, when I boot it, it double check the floppy then does a beep and then it restarts (nothing is shown on the screen). It keeps doing that until I close it. I tried unplugging my floppy drive but then it does 8 beeps (according the the American Megatrends BIOS beep code it means theres a problem with the floppy controller) anyone knows how to fix that issue?
<8> Can anyone tell me where I can get something like OS X's geektool but for Linux?
<9> Nik_89: are you sure its failing because of the floppy? nothing shown on the screen makes me suspicious
<7> Yamabushi: no im not 100% sure
<9> let me suggest double checking video card insertion and cable security.
<8> Basically I need something that will keep the output of a unix command on the desktop
<7> well the video card is embed
<7> I mean builtin
<10> Okita more detail
<7> something quite strange is after about 8 hours, the computer opens up normally
<9> okay. thats most likely not the problem then 8) not having anything shown on the screen though... 8(
<9> possibly defective M/B ....
<7> but then if I reboot or halt the system it does that issue
<11> where is the configuration information for proftpd?
<10> etc/
<9> is your cooling system operating normally?
<11> so i can manage users and stuff
<11> and the directories for the users
<9> i.e. case closed, cpu fan on and p/s fan on?
<10> duno
<7> Yamabushi: everything seems to work
<12> hey
<7> Yamabushi: I was thinking at first that it might be the CPU
<9> cpu is seated?
<9> heh
<12> hoi - i'm trying to get at the hard drive on my ipod. i'm running 2.6.9-22.0.1.106.unsupported and i've modprobed ieee1394... not sure where i need to go now?
<3> good morning Quiznos the heathens have left, was getting pretty off topic for a while :-)
<7> Yamabushi: I was thinking maybe it lacked some thermal paste or something... although I haven't ever checked, I bought it all ***embled
<10> qwe yea?
<13> hi
<13> how to convert a date to the julian calendar?
<9> worth checking.. ive seen wierd things with the thermal paste being lacking
<7> Yamabushi: it probable dried off
<7> lol
<9> won't hurt to add more, just keep it away from the contacts
<14> Is there a really good book that discusses bash scripting?
<10> advanced bash howto
<15> too much thermal grease is bad
<15> you just need it to fill voids

<9> well, i wasn't suggesting "caking" it on there... but good point
<7> k I will go try it
<7> still strange that I get different behaviors when my floppy is plugged and unplugged heh
<15> Nik_89 could be a power supply issue
<14> check the voltages
<9> if you could get into the bios, you could disable floppy seek, but i doubt that is it.
<14> 3.3,5,12 volts
<15> Nik_89 you may be exceeding the current capacity of your supply
<11> how would proftpd be started?
<8> Quiznos: Like I want something that I can say, keep the output of "cat todolist" and "top" visible in the background on my desktop
<7> well its 300W
<9> gunoo: as root, proftpd i believe
<7> I have an extra one so I could try
<5> how do I modify systemwide env settings?
<7> and no, I wished I could reach my BIOS setup :L
<15> Nik_89 that 300W is broken down between al lthe voltages differently plus the drive could be just drawing too much current
<10> okita, well start top in a term, and does todolist change dynamiclly/asynch?
<7> pfred1: ok ill try with another one
<16> Okita: Similar to 'watch' ?
<15> like for the 12V line there's a crappy LM7812 in most suplies on a really piss poor heatsink
<17> Hali_303:The Julian day or Julian day number (JDN) is the number of days that have elapsed since 12 noon Greenwich Mean Time (UT or TT) on Monday, January 1,
<15> so you're not going to get an amp out of your 12V line in most cases
<15> or 12 watts
<7> well take note my computer worked for like 1.5 years before I started seeing that behavior
<15> Nik_89 lots of gunk could build up on a heatsink in a year huh?
<8> flyboy^: Kind of, except I don't want it to need to start in a terminal
<15> once a year I blow my system out with high pressure compressed air
<18> hey
<18> i'm stuck trying to mount a usb portable device over firewire... any tips?
<8> http://flickr.com/photos/merlin/1202185/
<18> i'm running 2.6.9-22.0.1.106.unsupported kernel
<8> Like you can see in that picture, ps -A, cal, and all sorts of things show up directly on the desktop
<8> So that even with desktop switching, it'd still be there
<19> hi
<15> are you?
<20> lo
<19> how do I make a symbolic link to a directory but still have the shell recognize the real path of the directory if I cd into it via the link?
<20> jzxu: you're in the dir
<3> Quiznos: i almost had to go the /ignore :-)
<19> jim: huh?
<10> q_w_e what happend?
<20> if you cd thru the link you -are- in the dir it points at
<7> I just tried another power supply resulting in the same behaviors
<19> jim: I know, but if I do pwd, it'll display a path that goes through the link
<15> pwd
<20> you mean that does not go thru the link
<7> next thing I'll do is check the CPU itself
<0> i am partitioning linux file system on a 120GB hard dsisk. iam thinking of making /partition to be 15GB and /home to the remainder
<3> i reckon it was west coast college students waking up still drunk and being silly is all (or some asylum closed)
<19> jim: like if I make a link to /a/b/c/d/e/f in /a called z, and I cd into z, pwd will print /a/z
<20> julii: consider lvm
<10> julii make seven to ten partitions for the major dirs under / and usr/local
<19> jim: whereas I want it to print /a/b/c/d/e/f
<21> has anyone ever owned a compaq evo n115?
<14> laptop?
<10> q_w_e ah
<21> yes
<20> jzxu: I guess you could edit the kernel source to do that
<19> jim: ha
<20> but that would make things -slow-
<14> my experaince is dell..repaired them at one time.
<21> well igot a problem
<20> the fact is you don't want pwd returning anything but a real path; it might break stuff
<22> jzxu: zsh does that
<23> jzxu: make a function named cd that gets the realname and cds into that instead
<15> harryvv whenever i get junk Dells i just strip them for parts
<3> Quiznos: just before you came back online there ws distro discussion... what u prefer?
<15> harryvv they're manufactured garbage
<20> jzxu: not laughing... you can get the source for the kernel just like anyone else can :)
<21> charger light flashs like hell when connected to laptop but it doesn't power on, however when i remove the charger the light goes green
<14> pfred1 what are?
<15> harryvv Dell PCs
<14> pf and the servers?
<19> jim: I know, but my limited experience with kernel hacking will probably mean the resulting OS will be crap
