<zeeeee> hi all, i mounted a cifs share some time ago, but the share is no longer available. unfotunately my system is now hanging as a result. eg: "ls /mnt/share" and "df" refuse to be killed -9. how do i get unstuck? (i'd rather not reboot the system; that's a last resort, and a real headache)
<Michael3> Hello. I'm in the process of purchasing a new motherboard, and was wondering if there's some
<Michael3> 'network card matrix', or similar?
<nima> like a compatibility list?
<Michael3> yeah
<nima> http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/
<Michael3> ooh, that looks perfect, thanks.
<hatake_kakashi> anyone got samba working with ntfs?
<[wizard]> ^D
<fake_> stupid question: when I execute 'who -a' or 'uptime', my system shows a lot more users than are really logged in. why and how can i clear it?
<x80> can someone with xchat type /timer -refnum 123 -repeat 10000 100 /join #0,0
<x80> i dont understand why it doesnt work
<PeterFA> http://bash.org/?16678 lol
<Dagmar> BMXer: Dude, unless you're actually bothering to *audit* the stuff, it's *not* safer to only upgrade when necessary
<Dagmar> wc
<pm2> I did whatever in Vim where it highlights a search term - how can I now turn off the hilighting?
<zeeeee> pm2: :noh
<pm2> thanks
<fake_> when I execute 'who -a' or 'uptime', my system shows a lot more users than are really logged in. why and how can i clear it?
<Dagmar> fake_: Nuke /var/log/wtmp and/or /var/log/utmp and replace them with empty files, then reboot
<crysaz> are there repeated logins or are there some other people you don't know?
<fake_> repeated logins
<fake_> i'd rather not reboot (server)
<crysaz> do you have multiple terminals or ssh connections open?
<fake_> nope, they seem to be stale
<fake_> http://pastebin.com/539499
<Dagmar> fake_: Then you'll want to logout and log back in, or after wiping out wtmp you'll be seeing it report that no one is logged in
<crysaz> so if I am not totally wrong, pts/* logins are all local?
<Dagmar> They are
<fake_> Dagmar: wiping didn't do anything
<Dagmar> Wait nevernmind
<Dagmar> crysaz: No, there's no guarantee of that. (Thought you were talking about something else for a moment there)
<thechris> i'm having an shfs issue
<Dagmar> fake_: `man who`
<thechris> i cannot ls a certain directory. all others work though
<crysaz> Dagmar: I'm not a pro or anything...
<thechris> i can scp to the dir or access it with ssh just fine, it is only shfs that fails
<thechris> and only on that one dir
<thechris> it causes the terminal to hang...
<Dagmar> If you guys actually want to know who is logged in, you can't just throw random options at who and expect the output to make any sense.
<Dagmar> Generally, if you want to who is logged in, just `who` or `who -u` is all you need. Typing `who -a` is just going to confuse the hell out of you if you're just ***uming you know what -a does
<fake_> uh
<fake_> who -u gives me 9 users too
<fake_> i also read the manpage before coming here
<Dagmar> Looks like you have nine users logged in then, or nine login sessions active
<fake_> well, they're not running and processes that I can find and I don't know how to clear them otherwise
<fake_> any processes i mean
<Dagmar> I already told you that
<Dagmar> ...although your distro may be sticking the information in other places for all I know
<Dagmar> Look at the man pages for w and who towards the bottom
<Dagmar> If you see references to /var/*/?tmp then nuke the files it mentions
<Dagmar> ...but if you don't forcibly kick everyone off after you do that the information w/who will report will STILL be wrong
<Dagmar> Typically, it's just /var/run/utmp and /var/log/wtmp tho
<fake_> ok /var/run/utmp worked
<fake_> thanks
<thechris> is there any way to force the umount of a shfs mountpoint
<thechris> umount -f does nothing
<thechris> it keeps saying "device busy" but it is not in use.
<iKernel> Anybody know of a command line program that moves the mouse cursor?
<crysaz> I have multiple logins in my system even if I am the only user. one for X, second for ssh connection to friends server and so on...
<crysaz> there fore I se myself multiple times in who -a listing.
<unholy> When I write a bash script to change directory, after execution,I'm back in the original directory. Is there a way I can have a script just change directory, exit and leave me there?
<theUg> Hi all. I got a question. I have a HDD with three linux partitions (2 normal and swap) and, let's say, free space. This machine is intended to be quadruple-boot system, that is one main linux distro, one test linux distro, W98 SE and Win XP. When I installed linux, I partitioned that aforementioned free space in four partitions, formatted FAT 32. If I pop Win XP boot CD, it sees all the partitions, but cannot install on those linux-formatted F
<theUg> 32s. I ***ume I could reformat one of said partitions. But Win98 cannot see partitions a all, it says the drive needs to be completely reformatted. Is there way to create partition Win98 can recognize without destroying partition table and reinstalling linux after W98 (I did it before)?
<worthawholebean> What algorithm does the "unzip" utility use?
<ignacio> Windows' fdisk is incompetent. Unpartition the disk and use Windows' fdisk to partition it.
<ignacio> deflate
<ignacio> Well, inflate I suppose.
<Dagmar> theUg: You have to know what Windows considers valid partitions. Since you don't, you should *back up your Linux data*, then remove any partitions you'd planned on Windows using, and use Windows' fdisk to make new partitions
<worthawholebean> ignacio: is there a C lib for that?
<ignacio> zlib
<PurpleSmurf> iggy!
<worthawholebean> ty
<Dagmar> theUg: Windows is also picky about things like "seeing" more than one primary partition per disk
<theUg> Dagmar, can WinXP setup program create those? I've tried, and it created something called raw partition
<theUg> I don't even mind reinstalling linux after, but I want to keep partition order in place (hda1 for Linux1, hda2 for Linux2, hda3 for LinuxSwap, hda4 extended partition for Win and so forth), since I'm a neatfreak.
<Dagmar> theUg: I've no idea what was calling those "raw" partitions unless you're actually believing something the blue and white setup screens arae saying
<Dagmar> theUg: Just leave the space you want Windows to be allowed to use unformatted and unpartitioned, or *make all the Windows install stuff first* and then do the LInux install stuff seconds
<Dagmar> s/seconds/second/
<worthawholebean> what's the vim command to make the tabs appear to be shorter?
<theUg> Dagmar I don't believe in blue screens, but I do believe NT is better than DOS, and that Vista look promising (look, ma, 'em Windos got a root p***word!).
<ignacio> :set tabwidth=
<worthawholebean> ignacio: no
<ignacio> tabstop, my bad.
<jon_k> theUg, but applications can still jump in to root mode from a normal account
<worthawholebean> tysm
<Dagmar> jon_k: Especially if you've been duped into installing Starforce
<jon_k> Dagmar, yeah that crap cd protector
<Niacin> anyone know if the belkin 802.11g wireless card is supported?
<jon_k> theUg, never seen a linux program that can jump in to root from a user before without a buffer overflow with shellcode
<Niacin> pci card that is
<jon_k> Niacin, chipset?
<theUg> Dagmar, I'll try unformatted stuff. As I said, I did install lin after win before.
<Dagmar> theUg: UNtil/unless you've spent some time figuring out what Windows will and won't tolerate (because it's that lame) you generally have to let Windows do it's installing first just to avoid headaches
<gm152> and to avoid issues with the bootloader later.
<Dagmar> Yep, that to
<Niacin> jon_k its Atheros
<Dagmar> s/to/too/
<Dagmar> This is one of the many, many ways that Windows is ****.
<unholy-crap> okay i configured my kernel to disable acpi so that apm would work
<unholy-crap> now all my battery monitor applets are broken
<Dagmar> That'll happen
<unholy-crap> and i downloaded some battery monitors like wpbm? and ibam wich are made for apm
<unholy-crap> they dont work either
<Dagmar> cat /proc/apm
<theUg> jon_k, hell all the better than XP. Three days ago I came from work, booted me laptop, and that sonofabitch started installing crap right and left all of a sudden. Virus attack, you see. I lived happily behind the firewall, blocking IE altogether, but my subscription had expired about a month ago, and I was too lazy to steal some more sotware.
<Dagmar> If you don't see something that looks like stats, then I have news for you... you didn't actually configure the kernel properly for APM either
<gm152> Niacin: madwifi supports atheros chipsets.
<Niacin> thanks gm145
