<ChrisBradley> And I can sign the blasted contract
<infi> contract?
<ChrisBradley> I'll do a lot of things - but I won't climb a telephone pole
<phycho> lol
<infi> oh
<infi> well, tell them that it DOESN'T work, and don't sign any blasted contracts until they fix it.
<ChrisBradley> A) No gear
<ChrisBradley> B) I don't even like ladders
<infi> I ***ume you've tried another CD?
<Kevin`> Skiddles^ come over here and climb mine, I want cable
<ChrisBradley> Debian Etch Live
<Skiddles^> :(
<infi> to rule out a bad CD
<Skiddles^> I want Ubuntu :P
<ChrisBradley> I think that's what you call it - its the Etch install anyway
<Dagmar> THe last time I had cable installed, I just took the phone from the guy and handed him a soda
<Skiddles^> Then again, I'd come up with reasons for myself why not to get Ubuntu and then quieten down again
<micty> and all the windows I have opened with the xserver are opened on my windows machine
<Dagmar> Told the remote tech what my MAC and modem ids were and got it done lightning quick. Heh
<micty> but from the remote machine they disapeard
<Dagmar> He was like "What are you doing? I'm supposed to install your cablemodem." and I said "Do you know Linux? No? Then you sir, are having a soda and a pleasant break."
<Kevin`> i'd let them poke at it and give up first
<Skiddles^> Heh
<ninjaz2> cox let me install it myself for a discount. :-)
<PurpleSmurf> heh Dagmar
<Ticho> Kevin`: you mean, let them stare at the login: prompt? :>
<Kevin`> oh, i'd let them log in if they asked
<PurpleSmurf> i did the same thing with the guy-kid who installed my cable; actually, i told him to connect the wire to the box on the outside the house and I'd do the rest, all he did was make a fon call to turn on the modem
<Skiddles^> I think I'll climb a tree or something
<Ticho> Kevin`: "Um, sir, could you log in Administrator user for me please?"
<phycho> why is cable so much more popular in the states than DSL?
<ninjaz2> actually I did the DSL here myself, too, as standard procedure
<PurpleSmurf> phycho faster
<phycho> ah k
<ninjaz2> also cable was rolled out first
<potato_pig> Hi, what might cause lilo to fail at 'LI'? I understand it means that the second stage boot loader loaded but failed to run, but how might it have been caused?
<phycho> k
<ninjaz2> and people really hate telcos. ;)
<phycho> lol
<nima> sbc expects you to indtall dsl yourself
<phycho> cable company = telco ;)
<PurpleSmurf> i cant get telco voice service at all
<PurpleSmurf> so cable is all that's left
<phycho> lol
<PurpleSmurf> phycho no
<nima> install*
<Kevin`> nima you have sbc?
<PurpleSmurf> cable is not telco
<nima> indeed, Kevin`
<Kevin`> what problems did you have, how does it work, etc?
<ninjaz2> in montreal it was easier to get third-party dsl, though.
<Ticho> PurpleSmurf: that's where i'll be at, in few months - no dsl
<Dagmar> potato_pig: You just moved that drive didn't you
<PurpleSmurf> Ticho get cable service
<ninjaz2> the cableco wanted a 1 year contract, and enforced using their modem
<Skiddles^> And I'm bored.
<ninjaz2> even though I already had my own
<PurpleSmurf> at least you'll have more to watch
<Ticho> PurpleSmurf: i will
<potato_pig> Dagmar: haven't done anything, as far as I know, might it reflect faulty hardware/
<Kevin`> nima ***uming you got a normal plan, is it stable? are you able to host a server?
<Dagmar> potato_pig: Well, http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Bootdisk-HOWTO/a1483.html explains it
<nima> Kevin`: it works very well for me, but first couple months i was getting little connection problems, turned out to be faulty equiment on their end
<phycho> over here you just call your isp and they hook you up to the dslam
<phycho> you have to do the rest yourself
<nima> yeah, i run a server
<nima> they dont give a ****
<Dagmar> potato_pig: Usually that sort of thing can happen if you have an older board and decide one day to turn off LBA mode in the BIOS or go from one board to another or something simliar that screws with the way the hard drive looks through the BIOS
<Kevin`> :D, so much easier asking someone then trying to figure out on the web site
<Skiddles^> Indeed
<Kevin`> how often does your ip change, nima
<Skiddles^> Well, at least if you're a nubstick like me :P
<phycho> problem over here is that isps like to shaft you with fair usage policies/traffic shaping and caps
<ninjaz2> heh
<phycho> on so called 'unlimited' service.s
<phycho> heh
<PurpleSmurf> yea that's not "unlimited access"
<nima> Kevin`: if i remember correctly, i've had my current one for at least a week
<phycho> PurpleSmurf - yeah, they sell it as 'unlimited' though
<phycho> ****ers
<Kevin`> heh, about as good as my dialup used to be..
<PurpleSmurf> liars
<PurpleSmurf> it's obfuscating terminolgy
<phycho> they wait till they got enough 'unlimited' customers
<phycho> then say "1% of our customers is affecting service for the other 99%"
<Dagmar> That's okay, that's what lawsuits are for
<PurpleSmurf> it's not unlimited at all
<phycho> "these 1% will be capped at dialup at peak times"
<potato_pig> Dagmar: Hmmm, thank you. I'd seen that but I'm sure I haven't done anything like that. I've fixed the problem by booting of a live disk and running LILO under CHROOT
<PurpleSmurf> there are many limits!
<phycho> when in reality its bull****
<Dagmar> To correct those little "fraudulent advertising practices" problems
<PurpleSmurf> ports blocks
<PurpleSmurf> speed limits
<phycho> its just the isp under investing bandwidth
<PurpleSmurf> blocked
<potato_pig> Dagmar: cheap hardware, most likely...
<Dagmar> potato_pig: Okay,, something blew away part of your install then. That's not good, dude
<PurpleSmurf> too bad i never did speed trials monthly
<phycho> purplesmurf - my isp has 24,000 2mbit customers on just 3gbit of capacity.
<phycho> lol
<PurpleSmurf> wow
<phycho> yeah lol
<PurpleSmurf> how did you find out?
<nima> Kevin`: i get near the advertized speed, but i have a Fiber to Copper box right down the street :-P
<phycho> they have bandwidth graphs
<PurpleSmurf> ah
<ninjaz2> so in court they will say that it's not limited, it's just under-provisioned?
<PurpleSmurf> adelphia has nasty business practices that I abhor
<phycho> PurpleSmurf - whats amusing is they use ellocoyas (deep packet inspection traffic shaping kit)
<Dagmar> *ahem*
<PurpleSmurf> wow that's spying
<phycho> to stop 100% utilisation of their links
<phycho> lol
<PurpleSmurf> run Tor!
<phycho> haha
<phycho> tor's slow
<phycho> i just tunnel all my data over ssh
<phycho> ssh has 'high priority'
<phycho> so i max out my link downloading torrents through ssh
<phycho> haha
<Kevin`> hehe, it won't for long
<PurpleSmurf> at some point your privacy has to outweugh speed
<Dagmar> Yeah, a college here just ****ed up large on that front
<Dagmar> One of their admins got the clubie idea that kids were using ssh tunneling to hide their P2P access
<phycho> Kevin` - it has to, if they limit it, ill just use openvpn/vpn instead
<phycho> since they have to prioritise vpn for biz services
<phycho> haha
<PurpleSmurf> Dagmar were they doing that?
<phycho> Dagmar - i do that at college too
<Dagmar> ...so he lumped ssh, https, ssl-pop, and ssl-imap all into the same traffic group
<phycho> =)
<phycho> lol
<PurpleSmurf> ew
<phycho> dagmar - if they did that id do it over standard http
<phycho> with http-tunnel
<phycho> more than one way to skin a cat.
<Dagmar> Either way, he managed to piss off about 3/4 of the actual CLUED part of the campus
<phycho> or VPN.
<phycho> haha
<Dagmar> People couldn't even get their encrypted Gmail POP
<PurpleSmurf> wht happened then?
<ninjaz2> Dagmar: so like 3 people were upset?
<phycho> lol
<Kevin`> 3 dangerous people *
<ninjaz2> hehehe
<PurpleSmurf> when i go back to sch, i might try to get a job working on the lan as ***t admin or hacker
<phycho> id laugh if they rooted him
