<wereHamster> how can I checkout a specific kernel version (usign a label) with git?
<balrog-kun> you can clone the whole tree and then use "cg-seek" to the label
<gb> no dont use clones
<gb> its immoral apparrently
<gb> do it the old fashioned way :)
<juice`> any idea why my Buffers are extremly low (16-20k) on very busy box? kernel 2.6.15.6
<juice`> i'm talking about figure in top called Buffers, in vmstat called buff
<juice`> i have 3GB of ram, more than 5000 connections showed by netstat -t, and even tho my buffers have extremly low value
<wereHamster> gb, so what's the 'old fashioned way' ?
<gb> wereHamster: uou tell me :)
<wereHamster> I don't know.. you came up with this idea :)
<gb> wereHamster: sure :P
<juice`> so.. anyone got any idea what those buffers are?
<juice`> i thought its to cache tcp connections
<juice`> but maybe they have something to do with I/O ?
<gb> juice`: doesn't man work on your system?
<gb> did you accidently install woman & wipe man out?
<gb> no man vmstat :P
<juice`> there is not much about it
<juice`> i read it already
<juice`> buff: the amount of memory used as buffers.
<gb> uhuh ok
<gb> search engine?
<juice`> 'buffers' are very common word
<juice`> very hard to find exactly what i'm looking for
<gb> maybe you could buy a buffer on ebay or amazon :)
<neil_m> am selling some processes on ebay
<neil_m> willow 4543 0.0 0.1 3300 1924 pts/3 Ss 14:58 0:00 bash
<gb> neil_m: no prize for second :P
<neil_m> no
<neil_m> none
<neil_m> :))
<neil_m> r00t
<gb> yeah lame :)
<neil_m> quick everyone get your irc-remote-root-exploit-kits.tar.gz
<gb> probably running mirc :)
<gb> gz?
<gb> you haven't upgrade too your
<gb> bz2 version yet?
<neil_m> no
<neil_m> am behind the times
<neil_m> am still on 0.1-alpha
<neil_m> :))
<Perdignus> Hello - Does anyone have experience with bootsplash? I'm missing /proc/bootsplash on a machine for some reason.
<angeliang> boot splaash
<angeliang> don't know about it
<Perdignus> Hello - Does anyone know the process for figuring out vesa modes like vga=806 ?
<Perdignus> vga=806 works for 800x480 24bit but I need a 16bit mode
<kikko_> hi
<kikko_> If I need reliable timing in linux
<kikko_> what should I look at
<kikko_> tried setitimer
<kikko_> seems very imprecise
<kikko_> so what else is available, without cooking the cpu due to polling?
<Perdignus> kikko_ what about the rtc?
<kikko_> Perdignus, in the kernel doc it says:
<kikko_> Programming and/or enabling interrupt frequencies greater than 64Hz is
<kikko_> only allowed by root
<kikko_> pluis
<kikko_> *plus
<kikko_> somewhere in the same doc
<kikko_> it says that only one process at a time can use the rtc
<kikko_> I'd look into HRT, but I've got kernel 2.6.15 but HRT is savailable since 2.6.16
<johnny__> usb drivers use scsi subsystem... does also sata drivers?
<zarathushtra> yep
<kikko_> afaik sata uses scsi commands on the wire, so yes
<johnny__> ok, howbout this: I just ran into partition number limit of 16... is this normal under scsi?
<johnny__> I have a large drive, and I want to carve it up into small chunks
<johnny__> is this limitation limited to the kernel, meaning there's nothing about the hardware preventing me from creating and using say 40 partitions on the same drive/
<johnny__> ?
<kikko_> the limit is probably in the partition table
<kikko_> you could use lvm
<kikko_> and slice it up in as many parts as you want
<johnny__> unless lvm is available in other operating systems, that's not an option
<johnny__> but having said that, I am using it for the linux side
<johnny__> well the thing there, is I've partitioned the drive in the past to more than 25 partitions
<dweimer> johnny__: Use a different partition table like gpt. You'll have to use a tool like parted rather than fdisk though.
<johnny__> how would that help me with the scsi thing?
<kikko_> johnny__, btw what error message do you get when you hit the limit?
<johnny__> device not found
<johnny__> or rather no such device
<kikko_> are you running udev?
<kikko_> might be a problem with a missing node in /dev
<dweimer> johnny__: My fault, I thought you were hitting the dos label partition limit, not the scsi disk limit.
<dweimer> johnny__: Are you using a 2.4 kernel?
<johnny__> no, 2.6.15.something
<johnny__> I'd have to go grab the laptop power cord to see exactly which one
<kikko_> johnny__, what distro?
<johnny__> debian, just installed it on the laptop
<johnny__> the truth is I can use it the way it is for its initial purpose (as a demo of some web apps)
<johnny__> but I really want to get it to the point I can use the other 230 gigs
