<0> neil_m: doh see this
<0> PSU 580W TAGAN SuperSilent TG580 .54
<0> euro
<1> whoa
<0> expensive
<1> totally
<0> PSU 480W TAGAN TG480-U22 2Force .55
<1> those super duper silent high power PSU are always expensive
<2> bah high power :P
<0> neil_m: this 580W must be totally quality PSU
<1> yeh
<3> anyone what the major number for /dev/uba is? i'm building an initrd image which sees my usb flash drive and reports...
<3> uba: device 3 capacity nsec 2001888 bsize 512
<3> uba: uba1
<3> problem is, i've created a /dev/uba and /dev/uba1 with major,minor numbers as: 125,0 and 125,1
<3> but i cant mount this

<3> any ideas?
<3> uhh... i thnk i just found the major number is wrong :-s
<3> should be 180
<3> lemme try that
<4> essiene: in the kernel source under Docume.. theres a file listing all device numbers
<3> ubra: ohh... i didn't know that... thnx
<4> devices.txt
<4> thats it :>
<3> thnx ubra
<3> btw, quick question (i've not been floowing dev threads), what's the relationship b/w /dev/ubXX and the former way for /dev/sdX for usb storage?
<3> is the /dev/ubXX the new prefered way?
<4> isnt sd - scsi emulation?
<3> yeah
<3> so is scsi emulation for usb storage going bye bye in exchange for proper usb storage blk devs ala /dev/ubXX?
<2> probably
<2> linus thinks acsi emu ****s
<2> scsi emu too
<3> personally, i wouldn't know if it ****s or not (since i didn't code it :D), but i think i prefer /dev/ubXX too
<3> its more uhhh... predictable? :)
<2> a year or two ag in one of the lkml he put quite succinctly that hardware devices should be named without any reliance on an archaic standard that has nothing too do with how the device actually functions
<3> i c
<3> and that's a good point too
<2> so I guess some people have taken what he said too heart & done something bout it
<2> it put a lot of the pro scsi crouds noses outa joint at the time though
<3> lol
<2> no lamer hunting in here please
<3> gb: i could lend you my typist... just uhhh... she does a lot more for me than type :P
<2> sounds like a high maintenance item too me
<3> ohhh... you have no idea
<3> ahh... initrd wrks well now... my thin client boots :D
<5> what options should i p*** to kernel in the grub so that i starts wifi or eth0 corresponding to the option ?
<6> vimman: that will not work, bond eth0+wifi togetter and don't mind anymore
<5> WoodyWoodpecker: i was wondering what was wrong with my --netprofile option to kernel in grub..
<5> thanks anyway WoodyWoodpecker
<6> I don't know about a --netprofile option with gnu grub
<6> What distro are you currently running?
<5> fedora
<5> fedora core 5
<6> vimman: maybe fc5 does not have gnu grub after all and this option is valid. I don't know. But like I say. Configure your bonding network and just boot without, then your menu.lst will be gnu grub conform anyway (if you don't have more non gnu configs used)
<6> np
<2> what ddoes grub or fedora crud have too do with #kernel?
<2> issues with those are better dealt with in #fedora or #grub
<6> grub p***es arguments to the booting kernel. Indeed it lets you do lots of things related to your kernel.
<6> But #grub would be better, yes
<1> and fedora is no use without the kernel
<1> heh
<2> indeed & at the very least give them a kernel version & grub version
<2> helping sumone with options without the version is difficult
<2> especially given options vary from version to version & module to module
<2> I personally prefer lilo & keeping my boot prompt empty
<2> ie I wait till the machine has mounted / before trying too do things which should remain in user space after booting
<6> That is correct, but helping someone is never wrong. gb: try booting mach/hurd
<2> WoodyWoodpecker: helping sumone too cause themselves & others down the track is wrong in my opinion
<2> add problems in there
<6> If you have a monitor which isn't able to do vga=791 and I temporarily use one I would like to just p*** a arguement rather than booting, editing, booting again and before switching over to the old monitor changing my config again.
<2> like I said I keep it simple
<6> I dont' say "do this", I say "this is how it should be done"
<2> then you'd be wrong
<2> how can you say something should be done in a particular way without all the salient information?

<6> If I tell someone "rm -Rf /" is good for your system and he does it without either knowing or reading rm and understanding FHS is dumm anyway.
<2> WoodyWoodpecker: this is still not relevant too #kernel, utter your fud elsewhere please
<6> Why would I be wrong, just to telling someone, he "should" be doing something
<6> kk
<1> well i think if you helped someone no harm is done
<1> @D
<2> neil_m: noone asked you :P
<2> neil_m: how bout I help you into some concrete slippers before you go for a swim? :)
<2> after all no harm is done according too you :)
<1> gb maybe you should think about following in WoodyWoodpeckers footsteps and helping people, rather than bitching about stuff being "Off-topic and attacking people"
<2> I personally feel one of the better ways too help sumone is too discuss their problem with them until they manage too learn enough too solve that problem & future problems by themself
<2> neil_m: nah I'll stick with how I do things now thanks
<1> probably is you never do that
<2> however discussing the problem requires people too actually provide information rather then have it dragged out of them
<1> *problem
<1> you just attacked that guy for helping that other guy
<2> I dont know about you but my crystal ball struggles sometimes
<2> neil_m: If you say so
<2> I'm not here too argue with you
<1> na just other people
<1> heh
<2> im not even here too be your friend :P
<2> I'm here because I was asked too be here too ***ist in maintaining the channel by the founder
<6> It ***umes that you are not really helping anybody.
<1> yeh
<2> if I choose too help ppl thats my business
<6> Either you help or just don't say anything.
<1> yes
<2> WoodyWoodpecker: you have a choice take your fud elsewhere or keep it up & be removed
<6> I just don't like it to help someone and then get a wtf are you doing at all from somebody else.
<1> back to the old bla bla fud bla bla take it else where
<1> he always does this when backed into a corner
<6> wow
<1> and he knows he's wrong
<2> I'm not here on behalf of the founders request?
<1> gb you seem to be causing more problems than solving
<2> I'm happy too discuss your opinion about me in the relevant forum
<1> by getting on peoples nerves
<2> this is for kernel discussion
<6> Lissen, I want to help or I wouldn't be here. But according to you I am not helping I am pushing against _the_fonders_helping_hand
<1> yes
<1> they should put that in the topic, helping is a crime and is forbidden
<6> yeah
<1> how childish
<1> who is the founder?
<1> i would like to have words with him to express my disgust
<2> ask chanserv
<2> Why are we advertising a book in the topic?
<7> why not :-)
<2> umm not very open source :)
<2> I dont even remember who put it there
<7> it says this somewhere on the page: Back to: Open Books Project
<1> gezz when did #kernel turn in to nazi germany
<2> ahh ok that must be why
<2> neil_m: last warning
<8> Hello
<2> refer too my /wii for the right place
<8> Nintendo Wii?
<8> heh
<1> gb stop questioning everything, the book is about writing linux device drivers for the kernel
<1> i believe that is relevant... is it now?
<1> *not
<8> No, it's not.
<1> heh
<9> Somewhat OT but I don't know where else to ask. Is there a way for a user to get a list of inotify watches and what process they are ***ociated with?
<2> No doubt
<2> There's ways & means too do most things, whether it's practical or not is another issue
<2> Care too ellaborate on what you are trying too achieve by obtaining this list & which user in particular needs it?
<9> Ideally I am looking for a pre-existing utility that will do this sort of thing.
<9> The user is me. I have apparently hit my inotify watch limit and I'm wondering what it is that has so many watches going on
<2> ps lists most things related too processes
<2> top is another good program, but both have there downsides
<9> I don't see anything in either man page about inotify watches. Is there another term I should be looking for?
<2> I never said it would do exactly what you wanted, but both those are generic tools almost always available, perhaps sumones modified either too do what you want
