<0> say is there anyway, or patches to get the same type of memory performace in the Linux kernel as a BSD kernel? <0> Kde in FreeBSD over the weekend testing it with FreeBSD 6.0 and Kde 3.4 was only using 65MB at startup and compiling, along with running 2 applications was only at 110MB. It was running so much faster and smoother then I had ever run Kde in the past 7 years in Linux <0> I really wish we could see this kind of performance in the Linux kernel in the future <1> Xgates: what linux distro did you use? <0> hey there <0> well this has been on any Linux distro I've used over the past 7 years compared to BSD, so it's not over any particular distro I'm talking about but the performance of the Linux kernel with memory management comared to BSD <0> now I know they handle things different and I'm no kernel coder so I'm not sure how realistic this is to have memory performance, managment in Linux like in BSD <0> is there a reality to bring the Linux kernel to that level of performance with the mangement and without the memory leaks that I see so much in Linux? <0> anyhow later guys I love Linux but I hope in the future we can start seeing some more BSD memory performance in it <0> thanks <2> I tried to apply LBA48 support to an old kernel (can't change kernel version) anybody know how I go aout debugging it? heh... trying to update the PhatBox to support larget drives
<2> kernel is 2.4.18 <3> I heard about a kernel branch (something like x.y.w.z) which intend to be "stable" like the ones mainteined at distros... can someone remember me the correct name??? <4> Can? Maybe; Will?Maybe Not :) <5> can anyone help with displaying 1280x800 on a intel 855 graphics card? <4> Can? Maybe; Will?Maybe Not :) <5> worth a shot i guess <6> what module do i need to use leaky bucket network flow? <6> i have 2.6.14-gentoo-r2 <4> modprobe 10lb sledge hammer <4> always thought you were a bit sick :P <7> yeah <7> it ****s being sick <7> i always wanted to be a normal person <7> not some twisted degenerate freak <4> yes tell meabout it, every dayof my life :) <4> oicareful who you call adegeneratefreak, I might resemble that remark <7> today shall be a great day of sickness, whiskey and p***ing out <4> got enuf issues without it <8> heh <7> good for when you have a pus-infected throat <8> i guess it would be <8> make it jacks <8> lol <7> in ireland they always give kids whiskey with sugar when they have sore throats <4> wouldn't jacks make you choke when they get caught in the throat? <7> thats why theyre all alcoholics <7> gb: nah it just burns, alot then you can breath fire like godzilla <8> jack daniels whiskey * <4> ahh I was thinking jacks like the things you threw n caught, pickingone up at a time off the ground <4> ahhah <4> the daddy returns <4> hehe last pdp musta knocked him off the server <4> quick recovery <9> hmm <7> mmm 3 gb
<10> hy , a sucsesfully complied a kernel ,now all i need is an initrd imaga ,how can i make 1? <11> using mkinitrd possibly :) <11> or by hand, making a filesystem image in a file and gzipping it <12> k Im getting this in /var/log/messages: Couldn't open /dev/ppp: No such device <12> but when I list /dev I find: crwxrwxrwx 1 0 0 108, 0 /dev/ppp <12> I have ppp compiled into the kernel. <12> also when I type pppd I don't get the usual 10 seconds of garbage. Any thoughts??? <4> lots of thoughts <4> I think the Earth is egg shaped :) <12> thanks for the insight .. :) <6> can someone please tell me what kernel modules i need to implement leaky bucket network flow? <4> told you last night modprobe 10lb sledge hammer <4> dalfz: module names vary from kernel too kernel, you'll have too at the very least tell us wot version you have <4> you ircing from the box you want too modprobe? <6> gb, i have 2.6.14 <4> hmm your version say 13.4 <6> gb, not this box:) <4> wot are you trying too do exactly? <4> ahh ok <6> i have a stream with large fluctuations, and i need a leaky bucket to smooth it out to a constant bitrate <6> the average bitrate is very constant, just not in small periods (ms scale) <4> try locate sch_htb <6> Hierarchical Token Buckets (HTB) ? <4> in theory you should only need too modprobe sch_htb but dont ask me about parameters, for that you need too go and rtfm like I did <4> you wanted module name, that should be it <6> thanks a lot <4> look in netfilter for it <4> I still think the 10lb sledge is a much better solution though <6> sounds hurtful :0 <4> not for me <12> there si a module called 10lb sledge hammer??? <4> I wish :) <4> I'd deploy it against lemmings & trolls :) <4> & those too lazy too do their homework :P <4> save me some pain :) <13> hi, ive just compiled a .ko module, how do i now "install" it? <13> i coied it to /lib/modules/version/path... but not loads <14> nethai <15> hi there <14> hai2u <16> hi <14> hai2u <16> anybody knows how to make acpid not to write so many messages to /var/log/acpid.log ? <16> it's writing many lines each 20 seconds or so
