<0> when i do a 'xdpyinfo' i dont have XInputExtension listed in extensions... what do i have to do to get it?
<0> err wrong channel
<1> i am getting this error In function `bnx2_test_nvram' undefined reference to `crc32_le'
<1> does anybody know how can i fix it .. compiling under RHEL 3
<2> hi
<3> I'm configuring a 2.6.16-rc5-mm1 kernel; what's a good memory model? My options are 'Flat Memory' and 'Sparse Memory'.
<3> Quiet in here...
<3> TheBonsai: Do you know which memory model is best?
<3> fsck it, I'll just go for flat memory, as it's the default.
<4> there is no "best". there never is. if something was "best" there wouldn't be an option to change it.
<5> TheBonsai: of course there would be :)
<5> like in microsoft they give you the best default setup & then everything you do too change it makes it slower :)
<4> gb: "best" here highly depends on the specific use for that system. and what is "best" can only be decided by the one who configures that kernel.
<4> i'm not talking about MS
<4> MS is...
<4> well

<4> it's MS
<4> ;)
<5> TheBonsai: it was a troll, anyone who asks what the best or most efficient is simply trolling & desiring too be ignored as is the case with any vague/subjective question not containing all the relevant information
<3> Sorry
<5> tis the reason why most of my responses are equally vague
<3> Understood
<4> in this case, robink has no clue what the specific memory models mean (there are help texts, no?). He has a platform that supports more then flat memory model. He'd go better with the default in this case. It's like with "best" filesystems. If you have no clue what the box will be used for in future, there simply is no clear answer.
<3> The memory model option does not have a help text.
<4> http://www.linux-m32r.org/lxr/http/source/mm/Kconfig
<5> robink: like TheBonsai if you have no clue, dont change it
<4> for stability purposes i'd suggest "flat" in any way
<5> sais rather
<3> said?
<4> until the other got a bit mature
<3> OK
<5> & people asking on irc generally have no clue I find or they'd not be asking on irc :)
<3> I wonder why the help text for some kernel options was stripped out of my kernel.
<5> well without the kernel version we wont know will we
<3> I mentioned the kernel version I was trying to configure earlier, but here it is again: 2.6.16-rc5-mm1
<5> enough, time I did something constructive rather then reading vagueries
<4> robink: maybe it's another version (the help texts i pasted). google is your friend in any case.
<3> ...or Teoma...
<4> robink: but the description of the memory models shouldn't be "wrong" because it's a newer version "with help texts"
<3> I don't follow
<4> http://www.linux-m32r.org/lxr/http/source/mm/Kconfig explains the memory models.
<3> Thank you
<4> well, i'm sure there are big articles around with discussion and so, to really know what's going on, but well, i still recommend "flat" ;)
<1> i am getting this error In function `bnx2_test_nvram' undefined reference to `crc32_le' does anybody know how can i fix it. .i think its with network card modules code .. on RHEL 3.x
<3> When I upgrade a kernel, is it a good idea to symlink /usr/src/linux/include/linux and the other ***ociated include directories to /usr/include?
<6> hello. i have an old system i built a kernel for a while back. i needed a new module, but didnt have the same source. i downloaded the source for the same kernel version, built the module, put it in module directory, did a depmod. then, when trying to load the module i get this: FATAL: Error inserting fat (/lib/modules/2.6.13.2/kernel/fs/fat/fat.ko): Invalid module format. Any idea how to get past this, or why its happening?
<1> j1mmay, do you have working 2.6.13 kernel
<6> yes
<7> My laptop shuts off sometimes during high load processes such as compiling a kernel - I use kernel 2.4.20 custom build - did I miss something in the kernel to monitor the temp??
<7> anybody home?
<8> hey all, i just compiled one of my first kernels.....i set Y to the ext2 and ext3 options in the config file, yet when I goto boot the kernel I get a kernel panic - it say something about being unable to mount the fs....../ is ext3 according to mount.......not sure what i'm doing wrong...???
<5> mm hmm
<5> AngryElf: what hardware is / on?
<5> ide, scsi, something else?
<8> ide
<5> ok you got ide support compiled in also?
<8> i'm not sure
<8> i was just looking around for that and i'm not sure what the option is
<5> well its fairly important, if you dont then chances are thats the cause of your problem
<8> only thing i found was parallel IDE support.....but i doubt that's it
<5> everything rewquired too mount / should be compiled in
<5> nope its nothing too do with parrallel
<8> do you know what it is then?
<5> yup theres a whole section devoted too scsi & another whole section devoted too ide
<5> withoutr knowing exactly what your hardware is I cant really tell you the items you need too include
<5> I could guess like you did, but then you'd probably get a kernel do exactly what it does now
<8> i found Enhanced IDE disc support
<8> and then "Include IDE/ATA-2 Disk support"
<5> yup sounds good
<5> read through the help on those & the other bugfixes, etc nearby as you might need too include some of them also
<5> it all depends on your hardware
<8> it's all pretty standard, onboard ide HD.........shrug.......i'm gonna try to find the config for the kernel i'm running now
<8> thanx for your help
<5> zok,I didn't really tell you anything that wasn't common sense
<9> hello
<10> hi ya
<10> anyone who can tell me how I can make a sleep(10us) in a kernel driver ?, I ***ume msleep does not work because there is no task context?

<5> dinnuh time baq l8r
<11> will i have to patch 2.4.21 to have dev-mapper support ?
<12> can i get the size of an inode on an ext2 from somewhere in /proc?
<11> because in the menuconfig it only shows lvm where as in the newer kernels it shows dev-mapper support and specificv stuff like tht .
<13> sync finished with errors :)
<13> can`t sync gb : sync not suported by gb :P
<5> :)
<5> _RADIOhead: as for your sync error, it's because you forgot too deposit the $ in the bofh vacation account :)
<5> or should that be the save the bofh fund?
<13> gb, :)
<5> _RADIOhead: :)
<13> gb, dude how things there man
<5> crap as usual
<5> still need a diff & axles for the beast
<14> sgh e or
<8> hey all, how can i find out which kernel modules are built into my existing kernel?
<15> anyone ever NFS exported /sys ?
<16> mcr bad=idea
<15> I just have to keep logging into a box to read counters....
<15> since it's an NFS server...
<1> I hae xeon chip and i am compiling with smp kernel option but still getting one cpu does anybody know why
<1> but redhat stock kernel give me 2 cpus
<17> how can I stop 2.6 from autoloading a module?
<17> there must be a way
<15> rm /sbin/hotplug
<18> rue_mohr: try /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
<17> ok, I have no hotplug on the sytem
<17> I cant find documentation on the blacklist file, whats the format?
<18> rue_mohr: blacklist eepro100
<18> you should be able to tell from the things it has in it already
<19> teh bobbens
<17> there is no blacklist file
<18> your distro might do things slightly differently
<17> apropos, google, its not that well documented
<18> try #<your distro>
<18> im speaking for debian
<17> yar...
<17> I'm using debian
<18> what flavour?
<17> hmm
<18> SID, etch, sarge, woody...?
<17> testing
<18> mmm this should work though
<18> try in #debian then
<18> im using SID
<17> what option can I use to set the root console?
<20> console= i think
<21> Hi! After compiling a new kernel version 2.6.15.5 my computer hangs when showing something like this: BIOS-provided physical RAM map:
<21> then a couple of line with hex ending with: BIOS-e820: 00000000fec00000 - 0000000100000000 (reserved)
<21> then it hangs
<22> hi
<22> .sign mean its sign i mean that the file is ok
<22> ?
<20> rephrase please
<22> kernel.sign < mean that the file was checked and its ok
<22> ?
<22> i mean theres no data lost
<17> anyone know of any funkey problems with bonded interfaces?
<17> one of our machcines just became incapable of contacting particular other machines on its local interface
<17> but others are ok
<21> Hi! When booting with kernel 2.6.15.5 my system hangs when showing something like this: BIOS-provided physical RAM map: ... then like 8 rows showing "BIOS-e820: 000000000000000 - 00000000009fc00 (usable)" ... or something like that. Then the system hangs after the last row.
<21> If this is not the channel to ask this... please let me know
<18> does this happne with 2.6.15.4?
<21> i have only tested with 2.6.15.5... 2.6.8 doesnt show anything of this
<21> do you think 2.6.15.4 will work?
<18> dunno, was just surprised you are using 2.6.15.5 didnt know it was out yet
<15> what is the last line.
<15> does it end in lots of fffff ?
<21> i dont know exactly, but something like: "BIOS-e820: 00000000ffff0000 - 0000000100000000 (reserved)"
<21> any ideas?
