<0> 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. - 1 John 1:9 KJV
<0> im gonna go
<0> see ya
<1> does gimp save as ICO's ?
<2> ICO's are just bmp's are they not?
<1> I need to convert it for my website favicon
<2> Save as bmp and rename
<2> (i think)
<1> I also need a transparent BG..
<1> can the gimp save BMP's with transparent bg's?
<2> I think not. Hmm. You are probably best of just finding a png2ico software, (or something like that)
<1> aparently GIMP does allow saving as ICO's :P
<1> I just typed extension ICO and it saved and even gave me icon pallette options
<1> woot!
<2> ah. well. ignore me :)
<1> lol

<3> how can i print something from gimp? i don't see a print option under File
<4> anyone respond? i got disconnected
<2> hedpe_: do you have gimp-print installed?
<4> micket: probably not, i'll do that now
<4> errr, yes i do
<2> Well. i'm out of ideas, never printed from gimp myself
<4> micket: well, i have an .eps file that i want to make a poster out of, which means i want to print it like 3 legal size papers across, and X many down to make it scale
<5> How do I make a part of my immage transparent, then have the rest fade into my transparency?
<2> Add an alpha channel. select it, make a gradient or something
<5> What I did was I selected something, then feathered the selection, then ctrl+ked it.
<2> ah.. i misunderstod
<2> Well. did that give the wanted effect?
<5> Yes, exept one problem.
<2> It feathers the selection smaller?
<5> I can not manage to carry the shape of the selection over to other images.
<5> Because I need the same effect on more than one immage.
<2> Copy the alpha channel on the original
<2> and paste it into a alpha channel on the destination
<5> What is an alpha chanel?
<2> Open the channel window
<2> if you managed to gt transparency you must have an alpha channel there
<5> Oh, I see.
<5> Wow, this is my first time using chanels, even though I have made sooo many things with gimp.
<2> When deleting and cutting that channel gets drawn on.
<2> Hmm.. channels are usefull, and important :)
<5> I wish I knew about them earlier then.
<5> How do I coppy the alpha channel?
<2> uhm, well, i just tried with, deselecting all other channels
<2> select and ctrl+c
<2> then paste it in another image where i deleted everything in the alpha channel
<5> I don't quite understand.
<5> Oh, wait, I see, this won't work.
<2> no?
<5> Unfortunetly.
<5> HEre's why.
<5> Alright, see, the one image has transpaency in it that I want, plus the transparecy I added to the other immage.
<5> If I just use the one from the other, it will get rid of the one I want.
<5> Did that make any sence?
<2> Well, one method is to create a new layer, with your feathered edges, fill it with any color. Now just paste it in another image, make a selection from it and use the selection freely
<5> I will try that.
<5> Is there a way to simply turn all red to transparency?
<5> Never mind, I just understood what you said.
<5> I thought you meant something else.
<6> %make transparent
<5> Alright, that will work I think.
<7> If you need to make a color transparent, first you need to ensure that there's alpha in the image; type "/msg Wilber alpha". Then you select by color and use Edit/Clear. Type "/msg Wilber replace color" for tips on how to make the selection. Depending on the purpose, Filters->Colors->Color to Alpha may help also.
<5> O.o Where would I type /msg in gimp?
<6> Deformative: type /msg in your irc client!
<5> Oh, hehe.
<5> I have all the pictures made, but they do not fit because I do not know how to edit the code.
<5> =(
<8> can anyone help me with cutting and pasting from one gimp pic to another? essentially I am trying to do the equivelant of slicing by marquee > select area > copy > new doc > paste, I cannot do anything with it after that though as I get a floating layer thing and dont know what i am doing
<8> scrap that, appears to be workign now
<9> azcazandco: either click on 'new layer' to have it promoted to a normal layer, or click the 'anchor', to have it glued to the current layer
<8> okay and how do I transform a selection?
<8> clicking a layer doesnt seem to make it a normal layer
<9> 'new layer' <-- this is a button in the 'layers' dialogue, or an option in the menu
<8> yes it is when i paste a copy into a new document though
<8> I understand making new layers etc
<8> just different from photoshop :(

<9> azcazandco: so, if you make a new layer while your selection is active, you'll get that selection as the new layer, not an empty one
<8> okay what about transforming a selection?
<9> transforming into what?
<8> okay say I make a selection but it is 2px out on the vertical axis, how do I resize my selection?
<9> what version of gimp?
<9> (it changed recently)
<8> 2.2.11
<9> ok, so you make another selection
<8> like the whole selection again until I get it right?
<9> you can hold down shift to add the new selection to the current one
<9> but you still need to geth width right
<8> ok
<8> thats a shame
<8> but workable
<9> yeah, but it's already improved in the dev version
<8> ok
<8> I have just realised what you meant about the anchor thing
<9> it's hard to describe
<8> handy for the first imported layer to make it the background so to speak
<8> yeah
<8> any tips on managing workspace with gimp? I am currently throwing my sliced images to another desktop
<9> azcazandco: a separate workspace helps
<9> azcazandco: several workspaces if you need to use lots of images
<8> have you ever found layer boundires useful? they are just confusing to me
<10> you can also transform selections with the normal transformation tools
<10> just click on the appropriate icon in the tool options dialog
<10> that icon should say something like "apply to selection"
<8> so scale is the one I should look at?
<10> in your case, yes
<8> thanks
<10> have you read the doc already?
<8> I have this build job to do and a design project to do by tomorrow, if I can get through that then the gimp will be used forever more
<8> rubikcube: i got grokking with gimp but havent had a chance to read it yet
<10> if you're used to other image editing programs, a brief skimming will do, but it tells you all those little things that might be different (in the first two chapters)
<10> hmm, isn't that only fpr gimp 1.2?
<10> docs.gimp.org or it could also come with the gimp when installing it (depending on your OS)
<8> rubikcube: to be honest I have been stressing out about relearning stuff
<8> I bought pixel but wasnt impressed
<8> i'm sure gimp will see me right in the end
<10> sure :-)
<8> i guess in some respects I have been avoiding change
<8> had photoshop running under office crossover and got loads done on a design job but then it died and hasnt run again since
<8> I know deep down I just have to learn to use gimp
<10> getting used to it is all you need
<8> swatches panel still confuses me
<8> never mind... just cracked it
<8> also my blooming panels keep vanishing and I have to tab all the time to get them which is frustrating
<9> azcazandco: change the hint on them, or make them stick on top :)
<11> hei
<11> ok, so bump map isn't doing anything here
<8> how do you mean?
<11> well I have a black shape
<11> and I have a background
<11> so I wanted it to bump or emboss
<11> so I've selected the layer that I want it to affect, and gone into filters > map > bumpmap
<8> DesmondHussie: dsorry I was speaking to TheSheep
<11> gosh
<8> sorry, I am a total newb
<9> azcazandco: in preferences, in the window section (I think) you can change the type of the tool windows
<9> azcazandco: it's called a 'hint'
<8> k
<9> DesmondHussie: you need a second image with the height map
<11> a second image?
<11> not a second layer?
<11> what does a height map look like?
<9> DesmondHussie: I think you can use a layer too
<8> TheSheep: what would you recommend for a hint style?
<11> http://www.gimptalk.com/forum/topic/tutorial-bump-Map-Practical-Exercise-And-Usage-112-1.html
<11> that doesn't say anything about a height map :S
<9> DesmondHussie: height map is usally a grayscale image. The brightness of pixels tells how 'high' given spot is
<9> bumpmap
<11> same as a bumpmap
